The Theme Reflected Trough the Characters’ Personality in Luigi Pirandello’s War
CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1. Background
One of the literary works that we have known so well is short story. The short story is comprised of certain identifiable devices, each of which contributes to the making of an integrated and unified whole. A short story has elements that create the story: characters, plot, theme and setting. Those elements build the story become real and interesting to the reader and also create imagination, in the reader’s mind. Most of the men at that time must go to the war after they are twenty years old. The old man says that parents may have a right to raise but not to own their sons.
2.2. The Theme Represented Trough the Characters’ Personality in Luigi Pirandello’s War War is a short story written by Italian dramatist/author Luigi Pirandello in the early 20th century. The story depicts a time when a country is at war, and we see the parents of children who are going off to war crammed into a small carriage. The characters’ of this story are representing the theme about human nature. The couple wife and husband represent the human nature that someone will feel sad if something bad occur. The unnamed passengers represent the human nature that selfish. And the old-fat man represents the denial to the painful feeling.
There are seven characters involved in the story. There are five passengers in the carriage and two people wife and husband. They are the parents of the sons that go to the war. All of the characters have an experience of losing their beloved son in the war. The characters which are representing the human nature of denial of painful feeling are the couple, the old-fat man and the unnamed passengers in the carriage.
The story is started with the sight of husband and wife. They are mourning because their only son was sent to the war and dead. The husband says about “nasty world”. It is showing his
