The MLA Format gives students a standard on which to write on. Students are expected to write in such a way that it is professional and informative. A person would not expect to get a job if he showed up to the interview in shorts and a tee shirt, because they would not have the professional appearance for an employer to think highly of them. If a paper is written in the incorrect format, than the person reviewing the paper will not feel that the paper is creditable or they would feel the writer just did not put in the effort. The first chapter of the MLA Handbook covers the very professional and rather mechanical process of writing a research paper. It begins by identifying the different types of research and the important skills developed by creating these types of papers. It then dives into the actual process of writing, beginning with the selection of your topic and suggests that the subject matter should interest you throughout the entirety of the writing process. A major chunk of this chapter is dedicated to exploring different research methods and sources, making sure you are aware of all of the information that is available. It also stresses the importance of using credible sources and keeping track of which ones you’ve used, creating your working bibliography.
Using this standard format will allow our readers to focus on our ideas instead being distracted by unfamiliar text and formats. I think the format shows that you are aware of your audience and helps establish your credibility. It also provides guidelines and protects against plagiarism.
I agree with you, MLA was once upon a time the only style the I knew. I will be just like you always going to revisit the APA section in our library. I still hit some roadblocks but I would have to say our professor would be the best way to clear up all questions, or better yet lead you in the best direction to solve the issue.
Throughout the past presidential election, and many others, the ideal of electing the president by popular vote has been at an all-time high conversation topic compared to previous years. While many argue that the Electoral College defeats the purpose of voting, and diminishes the majority’s voice, this is certainly not the case. Without the Electoral College, elections would quickly become, and encourage, radical and corrupt ways in their voting systems, that could possibly result in a detrimental nationwide political crisis of voter fraud, and a rise to direct democracy.
The length of the research paper must be no less than 1,500-words and no more than 2,500-words. The 2,500-word limit does not apply to notes or to the annotated bibliography. In-text citations are required. If your sources are not acknowledged, your paper will receive a zero and will be required to be rewritten for a lower grade because this is considered plagiarism. Fox’s class is hard because there are a lot of rules that she expects her students to follow. The majority of these rules were not enforced in high school such as MLA format. Some students past high school English classes were not very strict at all on writing pieces in MLA format. Fox however, is strict when it comes to this. In her syllabus it clearly states, “MLA format means typed, double spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt. font with 1 inch margins all the way around, the heading, header that includes last name and page number, Works Cited page or Annotated Bibliography.
In the epic Beowulf courage is an on going theme that is shown throughout the entire story. By definition courage is the state or quality of mind or spirit that enables one to face danger, fear, or vicissitudes on ones own will and determination. There are many things form the epic that could be used to prove this statement, but I chose to use the section entitled "The Final Battle." In this section there are two great speeches given by both Beowulf and Wiglaf. I believe that in both of these monologues courage is portrayed by the two warriors, and it is easy to see why.
In English 111, the citation style taught to students is the MLA format, whereas in Humanities courses a student will use APA formatting style for papers. This was difficult for me to remember the differences between the two styles. I became so accustomed to implying the MLA citation skills on papers that when I needed to turn in a paper for my Humanities I had to focus and be aware of the APA formatting styles and not employee the MLA
The last writing project I did was an Argumentative. I choose to write and argue about the television and its effects on children. What the consequences are on playing violent/aggressive video games in young ages. Using credible sources and prove by evidence I could convince my reader about my opinion. In this paper I had to be fare and show both sides of the subject to give the reader a reliable opinion. The most important thing I learned was how to use all the sources and present them in the text. Using MLA format was something new and different for me. I realized the importance of presenting the sources in the correct format to keep the high credibility in my paper. I also understood that the MLA-format is very useful for paraphrasing, summarizing and quoting in my text.

The different types of formatting I had to learn in college is getting out of hand. The all of the different formats are loosely connected. The MLA format and endnotes are very similar in that they are found at end of a paper, but you do not give put the author last name and page number after it. I choose to use footnotes, because my laptop cannot decide what it wants to do. Another difference is the lack of putting your last name before the page number in the header, but is similar is APA Format. In high school, we always used the MLA format which does not use footnotes but in-text citations. The only time we used footnotes was if we needed to explain something but did not want to disrupt the paper. I was introduced to the Chicago Style format during my first history class. We were given a website, Purdue Owl, to reference how to properly cite sources for our papers and it shows the differences between sources. For instance, how to cite books, translated books, chapters, and even websites. I have used the different types of sources in my history classes. Something that aided and improved my ability to correctly use the Chicago format was a class I took with Professor Sasser. He dedicated a day or most of the class period to teach the class how to properly cite sources in the Chicago format and gave us a guide with examples of how to correctly use it. I have retained this information through repeated use. Every type of paper written in a history class, uses the Chicago Format and we write quite a bit of papers. The more you use something the more you retain it because it goes into your long-term memory instead of staying in your short-term
