In Bilbo’s adventures there are three main magical objects. There are Gandalf, the dagger aka Sting, and the ring. Gandalf is not a literal magical object but he considered to be a magical object. This is because he is full of magic which he uses to protect the dwarves and Bilbo. For example when the entire crew was stuck up in the tree because they were surrounded by Wargs and Goblins. Another example would be when Gandalf uses his magic to disappear when he hears Bilbo's cry. He stays hidden in the shadows and sneaks along to the chamber of the great hall. When the Great goblin decides to have the dwarves killed, Gandalf extinguishes the fire that lights the hall and kills the Great Goblin with a sword. Then, he shouts to the dwarves and
We learned a lot about the hero cycle recently. We know that heroes have a significant birth or lineage, a call to adventure, helpers, elixir—an item or weapon that possesses special powers that tend to help the hero, crossing of the threshold (normal world into that of the hero), and many departures normally followed by triumphant returns in which our hero is stronger and wiser.
Hobbit Essay: Emerging Hero Is Bilbo Baggins, from The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien a lonely hobbit or is he the most heroic hero there is? Bilbo learns that he is capable of doing many things during his adventure, learning many things that were hidden away from his great ancestors on the Tookish side. Bilbo learns from Thorin and the other dwarves how to be courageous, heroic and intelligent, but above all else how to lead the expedition into the great unknown with a victory. His traits and will to learn stand out to the other dwarves who later begin to admire his greatness.
killed a giant spider and he did not use his ring. Let us move on, the train has not met its final destination. Bilbo also was the one whom stepped up and spoke
Bilbo displays the archetype ‘the magic item’ when he finds the magic ring in the goblin tunnels. “Then off he went from door to door, until his following had grown to twelve-none of them any to nimble, what with the dark, and what with their long imprisonment”{ Tolkien, The Hobbit 174}. This displays Bilbo rescuing his comrades from the Elvenking’s oubliettes with the backing of the ring. “‘Dazzlingly marvelous! Perfect! Flawless! Staggering!’ exclaimed Bilbo aloud, but what he thought inside was: ‘Old fool! Why there is a large patch in the hollow of his left breast as bare as a snail out of its shell!’”{
Many heroes are courageous; they overcome any obstacle that comes in their way, but not all them were heroes in the beginning of their adventures. For example, Bilbo, from the novel The Hobbit, started out like a regular hobbit, simple, quite, and liked the company of his own home. But as the adventure progressed, Bilbo was no longer a regular hobbit, he was a hero. Bilbo went from a hobbit to a hero going through many obstacles in his adventure, when he escapes from Gollum, kills the spider that trapped him, and when he goes into the mountains by himself.
The ring makes him invisible, but he doesn’t know that yet. He then comes across a little shriveled up hobbit named Gollum. He knows the way out of the cave so he made a bet with Bilbo. If you can beat me in a game of riddles I will show you the way out, but if I win I get to eat you. Bilbo bravely accepts his challenge. Bilbo then wins the challenge by pure luck. “What have I got in my pocket?” (Tolkein, 78) That was his last riddle that Gollum didn’t get. Gollum gets mad and thinks Bilbo is trying to trick him. He then puts on the ring. Gollum then goes to the exit of the cave unknowingly followed by Bilbo. Bilbo then jumps over Gollum and out the door. He was very brave to face Gollum.
Aimee Klein, Ms. Emfield, World Literature, 4 March 2024. Comparison Essay: The similarities and differences of text. In the story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” the antagonist of the story, General Zaroff, could have easily killed the protagonist, Rainsford, at any moment in the text. They have gone face to face with each other many times, while Rainsford was very much vulnerable.
Bilbo’s weapons that he has with him on the journey are his invisibility ring and he also a magic sword that lights up when danger is approaching. The sword he has, Sting, was made by powerful elves of the past. The sword and ring helped him past many challenges on his journey. “He wanted it because it was a ring of power, and if you slipped that ring on your finger, you were invisible; only in full sunlight could be seen, and then only by your shadow and that would be shaky and faint.” (Tolkein 45.) This shows the great power the ring has. The supernatural help that Bilbo receives is during The Battle of The Five Armies. When Bilbo is knocked unconscious during the avalanche, the Eagles come over and help him to safety until he regains his consciousness. When he regains his conscience he grabs the Arkenstone before Thorin could get to it, and later Bilbo gives it to the humans for negotiating
This is because he was the one to recruit Bilbo and train him. One example of that is on page 8, andalf demands, “In fact I will go as far as to send you on this adventure” (Tolkien 8). Gandalf wants Bilbo to be a part of the adventure, but Bilbo wants nothing of it. One more piece of evidence is on page 150, the text describes, “THen they knew that Gandalf was going to leave them at the very edge of Mirkwood” (Tolkien 150). In the Hero’s Journey it stated that the hero must fight without the help of the mentor, That’s why Gandalf had to leave, but he later comes back on page 295, Gandalf surprises Bilbo, “There is always more about you than anyone expects!” (Tolkien 295). After his business, Gandalf has come back after the “Great Ordeal”. Bilbo had to get through Mirkwood and Smaug by himself. From the start, Gandalf helped shape Bilbo to become the hero that he is. Although he wasn’t there the entire time, he still made a
He provided Bilbo with help with his magic, and protected him. An example can be found in chapter six, when Gandalf states, “Up the trees quick!” (The Hobbit, page 109). Gandalf told Bilbo what to do. Then he commanded Bilbo to get up the trees, an order that saved his life.
This ring has the power to turn the wearer invisible but can also corrupt their brain. This led to Bilbo being so addicted to it that it drove him to kill for it. He ended up feeling sorry for it and they went on with the quest. Some things had hindered his ability to finish his adventure, one of them being the fact that he missed his home and that he almost quit quite a lot of times. The way he was able to get pass that weakness was because he realized what the quest was really for, so the Company of 13 could get there home back. He was scared most of the time as well which slowed down his ability to overcome those obstacles. The way he was able to overcome that was with the help of his
In the book, Bilbo was in complete darkness when he found it. He found it by accident, brushing up against something small that was cold and felt like metal. Without hesitation Bilbo slipped the ring into his pocket and continued on. In the movie, Bilbo wakes up in an unfamiliar place but he is still able to see. Hiding in the shadows, Bilbo witnesses a goblin get taken away by Gollum. But before Gollum fully succeeds in dragging him away he beats the goblin to stop its suffering. During the beating, the ring flies out of Gollum’s pocket without Gollum knowing. Gollum then takes the goblin away leaving the ring behind. Bilbo then waits and makes sure the coast is clear before he takes the ring. A change in this scene that stood out to me was that there is a major difference between what happened in the book verses what happened in the movie. In the book he has no idea where the ring came from, what it is, who’s it is, and why he now has it. He just threw it in his pocket without thinking about any of those things. While in the movie, Bilbo watches the ring fall out of Gollum’s pocket. In the film he also thought about the ring a little bit instead of putting it in his pocket immediately. In the book he is unaware of where he is and what he is putting in his pocket. In the movie he can see, he somewhat knows where he is and what type of situation he is in, and knows who and what he is stealing
Since the beginning of civilization, humans have domesticated animals and exploited their labor for personal gain. In George Orwell’s Animal Farm, however the animals take control of Manor Farm from their human overlords and rename it Animal Farm. They decree that on Animal Farm all animals are equal, and instill seven commandments to ensure that the animals stay equal. Throughout the novel Orwell shows the destruction of the egalitarian utopia that the animals have created. He suggests that the flaws of human nature are too much to overcome, and that this “perfect” and equal society is impossible. In the novel Animal Farm, George Orwell demonstrates that the human tendency to manipulate and be manipulated is what prevents us from being perfect.

Chapter six Out of the Frying-Pan into the Fire and the last part of the first movie there were some minor differences that will impact the rest of the book and the next movies. In the book, once Thorin and company escaped the goblin tunnels, Bilbo told the others how he had escaped using this magical ring. However, in the movie, he did not mention using any magical ring while escaping Gollum.
