President Barack Obama's State of the Union Address President Barack Obama gave his 2014 State of the Union speech last week and as everyone was expected, the economy was the main dish on the table. Obama talked also about other problems such as, military operations; however, all these problems are related to the economy. I believe Mr. President’s speech could be divided into three parts: dealing with the economy, then a shorter segment on other domestic initiatives, and concluding with a summary of military operations. Obama Obama primly focused on the economy in his speech. He began by emphasizing on the economic opportunity needed for everyone in States. “Opportunity is who we are,” he said. The target is to improve and expand the …show more content…
Obama Domestic topics domestic issues, he talked about the education system and how education creates future economic opportunities. Obama then talked briefly immigration system. He asked the senate to reform immigration code before the end of 2014. In addition, He announced a new federal retirement suggestion called “MyRA.” After that He briefly commented on Care Act or ObamaCare and how it is positive and affordable especially for children who are able to remain on their parent’s plans for a longer period of time. He concluded his comments on domestic issues on the recent incidents of gun related violence and Voting Rights code. Obama The final part of Obama’s speech was about military operations and other related issues. Obama noted that U.S. troops have been fully pulled out from Iraq, as well as from Afghanistan shortly, but he said this was not the end of war against terrorism. He called once again to end Guantanamo Bay detention center for ever. Obama then talked about diplomatic efforts overseas, such as in Syria and how Syrians want to get rid of Bashar Al-Assad. Also he announced that U.S. exists for the Palestinian people; however, Israelis should exist too and be secure. Finally, he asked the Congress to allow negotiations with Iran to dissolve the nuclear weapon issue. Obamas speech was concluded with the story of a wounded soldier and his way to recovery. He connected this story with those of the U.S. as a whole. He said that even if the road
The most interesting parts of Obama’s speech, to me, were the clarifications on his educational policies. His plans for higher education, such as halting student loan payments after 20 years or 10 years for public servants, seemed pretty cool to me. I’m not sure if taking government money to be used for student loans and giving it to parents while simultaneously stopping loan payments after 20 years is such a good idea. Pissing off the entire banking system might not be such a good idea in the long run. Grunts will be fired before CEOs cut their own bonuses, and I really don’t feel like that is particularly conducive to a good financial system.
President Obama came into office in the aftermath of the disastrous foreign policy record of the Bush administration. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 had served as a “switchman,” leading to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Bush administration exercised unilateral use of force and reluctance to engage the international community. As a result global elites and publics viewed the US unfavorably. The US economy was negatively affected by the costs of the wars coupled with the financial crisis of 2007. It was this environment that defined the contours of the election campaign of 2008. Obama campaigned on the idea of change, which represented a regeneration of America through domestic public policy reform and a return to multilateralism in foreign policy. Both domestic and international publics and elites were galvanized by Obama’s message.
In President Obama’s speech to the American people he conveys information about the death of Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda. With a professional yet charismatic tone, President Obama recounts the trials and tribulations the American people endured after the events of September 11th, 2001. And expresses that justice has been done to put an end to an individual that caused pain and suffering throughout the world.
The current event I choose for this assingment is The State of the Union Address delivered by President Barack Obama at the U.S. Capitol in Washington on January 28 2014. The State of the Union address is the Presidents annual speech to Congress and the nation; it’s an opportunity for the President to set the legislative agenda, launch proposals and directing public attention to his goals for the future. Eventhough the speech is delivered before Congress, it is mainly regarding the public. It's a chance for the President to highlight the progress America has made for the past few years, as well as outline new ideas and changes he hopes to make with the help of congress and support from the public. In addition, it’s hope that the State of the Union Address promotes unity among both parties in congress and win support for his legislative agenda from the public.
In this year’s State of the Union Address President Obama begin by outlining certain topics he considered important, but did not mention again during his address. In my opinion these were the most important of and the topics that need to resolved as soon as possible. For example, these issues were; a criminal justice reform, control of prescription drug abuse, a broken immigration system, more controlled and equal pay, higher minimum wages, more control and restriction of guns, and lastly paid leave. I feel that in order for these issues to become solved in the quickest and most efficient way possible, President Obama should have gone into greater detail on how he plans to reform.
In order to have a successful speech one must appeal to all possible demographic. At the beginning of the speech, he addresses the key points/successes, and includes most middle/lower-class Americans. Not focusing on the upper class, nor political parties. Obama proposes congressional action to help speed up the middle class, and expand more opportunities for American families. Where he hopes to improve education for the young, and provide a safeguard for older Americans, by introducing “MyRA” retirement savings. Ordinary citizens or military personal, young or old, President Obama appeals to all of America not focusing on
Obama tells us in his speech that crisis needs to be fixed by change. He even admits that some people don’t believe his proposed actions are the answer to our problems. Obama tries to solve this by telling them his action’s, which not stated, are the answer. This is a very poor attempt at persuasion on his part.
inform to who's the speech to.” They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America, they will be met. “ Obama says that he will work to try to help the country and so does Washington, “The consequences of my decision will be judged by my Country, hopefully
The state of the union addressed many issues that America is facing as a whole. The overall proposal was good with some points and bad in others. His opening statement stated the achievement we have managed to receive over a course of time. The government, being that it is mostly ruled by the Republican Party will likely reject most of the ideas president Obama has stated. Some of the major topics mentioned in the proposal included economic wealth and health, college/education, employment, and war.
Obama was elected president in 2008 .WHen Obama was running for president many people did not know him. He was unknown to the general public. When Obama was elected many people were happy and wanted him to win because Obama promised to end war in Afghanistan and Iraq. Which he did during the end of his presidency he ended the Iraq war and also signed a nuclear deal with Iraq from obtaining nuclear weapons. He tended to keep away from foreign policy. Some of Obama 's Major Foreign Policy accomplishments are:Ending the war in Iraq Killing of Osama Bin Laden ,Nuclear deal with Iran ,Paris Climate Change Agreement, Opening of relations with Cuba, Trans-Pacific Partnership. He also went to go visit Cuba during his last year
In an address to the joint session of congress President Barack Obama speaks of the issue’s in the
Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States, began his presidency dealing with many foreign policy issues left behind by his predecessor, George Bush. President Bush was unable to solve many foreign policy problems faced by our country prior to leaving office. Some of these included the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Arab-Israeli conflict, illegal immigration, and improving U.S. relations with Cuba. President Obama was faced with the question of how to handle the number troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and ultimately how to end or lessen U.S. military involvement in these nations. Similar to other presidents, President Obama had to tackle improving the relationship between Arabs and Israelis. He was also faced with the problem of how to handle illegal immigrants and border patrol. A weak relationship between the U.S. and Cuba was another foreign policy issue that President Obama was faced with having to improve. This is President Obama’s last year as president. Overall, he has done a decent job with foreign policy, excelling in some areas, and falling short in others.
The 2015 State of the Union address focused on an overview of President Obama’s successes, rather than the typical laundry list of policies that the President wishes to address. That laundry list was mentioned, but not in such an extent as normal. Obama began the speech by asking the nation, “Who do we want to become in the next fifteen years?” (Obama) setting the stage for a barrage of personal stories, facts about Obama’s previous policies, and examples of the President’s idea of important values that must be considered going forward. The most important component of his speech was spread throughout, the general informality of the speech. It shows that Obama is removing himself from the modern idea of the President as a power-player within
Then candidate Obama outlined his overall vision for what his strategy would be in seven point. Firstly, he argues that there is a need to move beyond Iraq. America needs to move beyond Iraq and needs to refocus on America’s military, economic, and social power on the broader problems in the Middle East. This means America engages with longtime opponents such as Iran and Syria, and America must also engage in cooperation between Israel and Palestine. Secondly, Obama wanted to revitalize the military in order to get them ready for whatever challenges they might face. He would do this by equipping soldiers with better equipment and training. Thirdly, the President planned to stop nuclear proliferations. This would mean he would be working closely with the Russians, partner nations, and an international coalition. More specifically, this would mean stopping Iran and North Korea from getting nuclear weapons. Fourthly, another goal
Each part of the speech includes proof and refutation. For example, when Obama brings up the issue of Iraq, He provides the logical argument that America has the responsibilities of helping Iraq and leaving Iraq to Iraqis. The refutation occurs when he acknowledges nine-eleven and how it led to reactions that were against traditional belief and made the promise to take troops out of Iraq by 2012. He also makes the promise to have Guantanamo Bay closed. These promises were big promises that received great attention. I consider the promise Obama made about bringing all troops back from Iraq by 2012 to be one of the most impactful promises that he made as a president because it affects nearly everyone’s family and friends in the United States.
