As soon as I entered the faire, I felt like I had been teleported to another planet. There are several unique things going on at once. For instance, a man riding inside a miniature pedal powered wheel, an eight-man bicycle structured inwards, or a fire-breathing robot. The faire has a medieval-village vibe with a futuristic twist. The Maker Faire, started by Dale Dougherty, launched in May 2006 in the San Francisco Bay Area and eventually spread to cities such as Austin and New York City as well as other countries outside of United States. Maker faire is a massive science fair consisting of people who enjoy using and learning about the latest technology and like to showcase their inventions and creativity while educating others. The Maker Faire was influenced by the Make community, which grew as a result of make magazine, which was launched in 2005. This year, approximately over 100,000 attended the annual 2-day event in Queens, New York. Of the many sponsors, some were large companies such as Google, Intel and RadioShack. Startup companies such as Tiny Circuits, UFactory, Maker Arm, and many more also sponsored the faire. Application vary depending on what type of maker you are. People from incubators, accelerators, crowdfunding services, and VC firms attend these conferences to get insights on the economy and emerging markets. Startups at the faire have connected with accelerators such as Alpha Labs, which are state funded, and help them with supply chain, distribution, manufacturing, design and engineering.
