While many activists, like Martin Luther King Jr., took a peaceful stance against racial injustice, others like Huey Newton and Malcolm X were the polar opposite. Huey Newton and Malcolm X condoned violence in order to attain the goals of the African American community.

This rupture proved to be traumatic, leading Malcolm to embark on an extended trip through North Africa and the Middle East. He also made the Hajj, the traditional Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca, during which he converted to traditional Islam and changed his name, once again. After this extensive voyage, Malcolm returned to the United States more optimistic about the peaceful resolution to America’s race problems, stating “The true brotherhood I saw influenced me to recognize that anger can blind human vision.” Also that “America is the first country…that can actually have a bloodless revolution.” Tragically, just as Malcolm X appeared to be embarking on an ideological transformation, with the potential to dramatically alter the course of the Civil Rights Movement, he was assassinated on February 21, 1965 at the Audubon Ballroom as he was preparing to address the Organization of Afro-American Unity.

Malcolm Little was born on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska. Both of his parents were proclaimed pan africanist and followers of black nationalist leader Marcus Garvey. There were also very active in the Universal Negro Improvement Association. When Malcolm was 6 years old, his father was killed by members of a white supremacist group called the Black Legion, mainly because of him involvement with UNIA and his commitment to pan-africanism and the advancement of colored people, which was highly frowned upon during that time. When he was 13 years old, his mother was admitted into a mental health facility after suffering a nervous breakdown. Consequently, Malcolm and his 10 siblings were separated and sent to various foster homes.
Throughout history there are many great people who dedicated their life to the advancement of the African American race. Few of these people created as much controversy during the 1960’s then the man who would be known as Malcolm X. Unlike many of the civil rights leaders of the time who promoted non violence, Malcolm X believed in the use of aggressive tactics in his battle for equality.

For two years Malcolm heard rumors of Elijah Muhammad having illicit affairs with serving girls, fathering illegitimate children, and Nation of Islam ministers living luxurious lifestyles at the expense of the Nation (Crime and Investigation Network 2). These practices were in direct conflict with the Islamic beliefs; therefore, left Malcolm feeling betrayed by Muhammad. On March 14, 1964, Malcolm publicly announced his split with Muhammad and the Nation of Islam. He then formed his own movement, the Muslim Mosque, on March 13, 1964. Many of his friends then urged him to take a Hajj, or a pilgrimage, to Mecca. He took their advice, and traveled there in April, 1964. On his return, he changed his name once again to El- Hajj Malik El- Shabazz.

In 1931 Earl Little was found dead on the train tracks. Even though Earl Little was often harassed by white supremacists, the police ruled his death a suicide, with this ruling Earl Little’s insurance policy was not enforced. Malcolm’s mother never recovered from the shock and grief of her husband’s death. In 1937, she was committed to a mental institution and left Malcolm and his siblings to live with family and friends.

Reverend Little died when Malcolm was only six years old after being hit by a streetcar. Malcolm always believed that this was a hate crime committed by whites. Many speculate that this is what originally caused Malcolm to distrust whites. Malcolm’s mother, Louise Little, was committed to the State Mental Hospital in Kalamazoo in 1939.
