Mammography can detected breast disease when a woman has the examination. It is an x-ray image of the breast that can detect breast cancer in the women and differences in tissue densities of breasts. Mammography plays a key role when it’s comes to detecting early breast cancer. The history of mammography, become essential to the diagnostic tool, the equipment, improving through the years, and even to become the mammographer needs certificate/registry from ARRT.
When x-ray technology was first created in the nineteenth century, a German surgeon named Albert was able to use the x-ray technology to detect the breast cancer. Now the equipment is a lot easy to use and gives a few doses to the patient. There are many different brands out there in the world. In 1960, Dr. Robert Eagan developed a new technique to use without using the aluminum filter. He also introduced the use of cylindrical extension cone to reduce scatter radiation (562). In 1967,Senography became the first commercially available mammography in medicine. According to Carlton, the radiography community during this time was discovering an uncomfortable trade-off (p. 563). The research continued for creating better, less exposure radiation. Early 1970, Siemens, Philips, Picker and general Electric; they created a mammography machine (P.563). The equipment was improved and the researchers were trying to reduce the exposure dose. By 1971, the exposure dose was lower than Eagan, however, was still high. According to Carlton, continued research led to significant improvement in screen/film mammography and lower exposure (P. 563). From 1985-1990, a Nationwide Evaluation of X-ray Trends (NEXT) study discovered a wide variation in mammography image quality and in radiation exposure to the patient (565). This era was introduced low exposure while getting a better image. In 1992-1994, as a result of the American Cancer Society’s high-visibility public relations campaign that all women over 40 public screening mammography, and …show more content…
