Mandela Obstacles

I wonder if people questioned Nelson Mandela and thought that he was a charlatan when he told them he was going to put a stop to the apartheid. Hypothetically, I think that he may have encountered many people that doubted that he could do such a thing since it seemed impossible. To ease their minds, he simply said, " it always seems impossible until it is done." Mandela may have disseminated this quote in order to encourage the people living under the apartheid that change is possible. Another hypothetical scenario of when I think this quote was created was maybe after the apartheid was abolished in South Africa, and reporters were wondering how he helped accomplish something that was deemed impossible to many.

Mandela’s Way, by Richard Stengel, is a bio written about a complex man and a hero, the last pure hero at that. Stengel wrote this book so you could walk with Mandela through his past and to show how a leader leads. Stengel met mandela by chance while he was going down to South Africa, together they wrote about stories from Mandela’s past. In each chapter there is a lesson it’s either keeping your rivals close, or when to say no. Mandela once said “ QUITTING IS LEADING TOO Knowing when to abandon a failed idea, plan is a difficult decision to make Leaders lead as much by what they choose not to do as what they do Know when to leave your leadership position is a good quality. Have the confidence to pass leadership to others.” This quote takes me back to when I would quit but I never thought it would be a good thing where I would give up my spot because it finally hit me that I couldn’t do this on my own, but I would have to suck up all my pride in order to do that. Don’t you think that black and white are two separate races that can be in peace as a country? Belonging means to be properly of a particular group. Generally most South Africans are black but there are some people with European or Asian backgrounds and of mixed race. During 1652 the first white colony was set by the Dutch and latter British settlers arrived. In 1815 Britain took over the Dutch colony and South Africa became part of the British Empire. While the country possessed gold and good farmlands it was rich but it was definitely not peaceful yet because the two races fought over land and there were wars between the Boars who were the Dutch farmers and the British.

Today, there is no longer issues involving racial discrimination because of past events that worked toward the common goal of equality. Everyone wants to play an important role in the world and with laws supporting equal rights, we are able to influence decisions as a unified population. Nelson Mandela was a key figure of someone who wanted equal rights and would do whatever it takes to achieve that goal. The South African people initially did not have any decision on politics, where they lived, occupation, and etc. Nelson Mandela, who was a part of this South African population, followed his beliefs to eventually change these laws for his people. Even Nelson did not have the full rights as a human, but that never stopped him. Nelson and his people wanted the same outcome for their country. Nelson Mandela influenced many lives because of his moral decisions favoring the people of South Africa; His political views changed the fate of South-Africans and his many years spent in prison inspired future generations.

Nelson Mandela’s impact reached further than just South Africa, his legacy has impacted the world on a global level. There’s not a person that will be born within the next 100 years that won’t know the name Nelson Mandela. He became a global impact because of his determination to what he believed in. No matter how many times he got kicked down he got up stronger than ever. Even when faced with the death penalty he continued to fight, never giving up.

Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, then he became the presidency of his country in 1994. Up until his prison release in 1990 Nelson Mandela has been at the center of the most captivating and inspirational governmental concerns in the world. President of the African National Congress (ANC) and the leader of South Africa’s antiapartheid movement, he was relentless in the movement of a nation towards a multicultural government. From personal experience, when the world is so full of evil and sadness, it's good to go into a make believe world and try to forget the bad. Considering Mandela had to be hiding out most of the time he had lots of time to be reading and in one of these quotes he states, “Those Greek plays, you know, are really worth reading. it's like the classics, you know the works of Tolstoy and so on, because after reading that literature... you always come out… feeling very elevated and your sensitivities to… fellow human beings have been deepened it is one of the greatest experiences... you can have you know to read a Greek tragedy in Greek literature in general” (Mandala 113). It arouses a feeling of comfort when I find out I'm not alone in this way of thinking. Books have an impact of people's way of thinking and helps people see the ugly in the world or see the light life has to offer. He had so much extra time to read and interpret things due to the amount of solitude he had. I feel like it was a good coping mechanism for him to get through the obstacle course that is prison. I have heard many scary prison stories. For example, inmates beating each other to death or raping each other. I find it interesting that Mandela stook to his beliefs and stayed strong throughout the entire time he was stuck inside.

Nelson Mandela, a man recognized worldwide, was a human rights activist leader among other things. He believed in equality and peace for all. He fought for that belief in South Africa for which he undeniably sacrificed his life to. A figure of international peacemaking, he’s a man of tremendous accomplishments. How he achieved these accomplishments is astounding and it’s what he’s remarkably known. The life of Nelson Mandela started July 18, 1918, being born to Nonqaphi Nosekeni and Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela in the clan of Madiba in Mvezo, Transkei. Nelson was not Mandela’s first name because his first name was Rolihlahla (Nelson Mandela Foundation). Mandela’s life had many hardships but he conquered the hardships and became the first person of African descent to be president of South Africa.
