MANGING DIVERSITY IN THE WORKFORCE Management 5000 LaTonya S. Warren Webster University Diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. This means understanding that every individual is unique, and noticing their individual uniqueness. This can be different race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies and exploring these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment. It is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual. The U.S Department of Interior defines diversity as “ used broadly to refer to many demographic variables, including, but not limited to, race, religion, color, gender, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, age, education, geographic origin, and skill characteristics. America 's diversity has given this country its unique strength, resilience and richness.” Accepting diversity in new or establish company can have its advantages and disadvantages. There are challenges to achieving diversity, from the difficulties of defining the term to the individual, interpersonal, and organizational challenges involved in implementing diversity practices.
