In a short history, American manifest destiny was a big mistake for Indian people in the past. The Indian people lived on the land before the Americans came. However, manifest destiny is the affliction Americans have that makes them believe God and took control all their land. For example, American settlers took their land and forced them into another uncomfortable place, less nature resource, and difficult to survive. Moreover, America settlers brought diseases into Indian tribes that made a lot of Indian people sick and dead. In addition, American settlers had a negative impact to the environment and natures resource such as more hunting and fishing that cost extinction, more cutting trees to build houses due to deforestation. In conclusion,
One of the largest and most wealthy countries in the world, the United States of America, has gone through many changes in its long history. From winning its independence from Great Britain to present day, America has changed dramatically and continues to change. A term first coined in the 1840s, "Manifest Destiny" helped push America into the next century and make the country part of what it is today. The ideas behind Manifest Destiny played an important role in the development of the United States by allowing the territorial expansion of the 1800s. Without the expansion of the era, America would not have most of the western part of the country it does now.
American culture has changed over time as the country has grown. It is important to know our history so we can avoid the same mistakes that our ancestors made before us. With knowledge of our history and our prior mistakes, we can learn from them and make better decisions in the future.
Manifest Destiny was a national philosophy that explained how the United States understood its place in the world and related to its neighboring countries. Throughout history, from the start of the thirteen colonies to the present day, Manifest Destiny has maintained the near-omnipresent conviction that God chose the United States to be a political and economic power, a superior nation among the rest. Stemming from an article written by journalist John O'Sullivan in 1845 in the Democratic Review, the phrase "Manifest Destiny" explained the reasons for the necessary territorial expansion of the United States along with supporting the annexation of Texas. The doctrine of Manifest Destiny reflects the ideology of a century in which expansionism
Westward expansion was a key component that shaped the United States not only geographically, but economically as well. The first sign of any expansion West from the original states was when Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana Purchase from France in 1803. The country was in need of new land in order to accommodate for the expanding population. Once the country started to expand, its power soon followed. The nation had a struggle with expanding because of the Native Americans already living in the West, but that didn’t stop the people of the United States. Overall, American expansion, during 1803-1860, transformed the West and affected the Native Americans because of Manifest Destiny, Indian Removal and the advancement
"Manifest Destiny" is a known for the common unchanged negative behavior during the 19th century. It was a belief of all Americans that settler was destined to stretch across North America. This strong state of mind helped fuel western settlement, Native American evacuation, and war with Mexico. In the late 1800s, white Americans extended their settlements in the western piece of the nation. They asserted land generally utilized by local Indians. The Indians were hunters. What's more, they attempted to keep control of their chasing lands. Both the pioneers and the Indians were blameworthy of savagery. The national government bolstered the settlers' cases. It battled, and won, a few wars with Indian clans. It constrained the Indians to live
Being born in a very religious conservative Catholic family, I grew up hearing Biblical stories about The Promised Land and the Israeli people being the “chosen ones” by God. I was also told that my future had already been determined and that there was nothing I could do to change it .It was not until I was in my teens that I began to develop a curiosity about nature and how it worked; I was not satisfied with the answer “because God wants it to be like that” anymore. It saddens me that in the 21st Century, some people still believe that a particular land belongs to them, just because a sacred text says so. From my understanding a lot of wars have been fought because of that reasoning. In my opinion, the idea of Manifest Destiny is very similar
The ideal of Manifest Destiny has shaped the American society during the 1830s to 1840s by establishing the innovation of manufacture, the expansion of territorial, transportation, and communication. Though it is one of the greatest period of the westward territorial expansions, it caused a massive conflict of social interaction, political, religious and automatically divided the gender roles in the community.
The phrase Manifest Destiny refers to a controversial topic occurred in mid-eighteen hundred. This phrase was created and first use by New York journalist John Louis O’Sullivan to address the scandal that cause the expansion of the United States, annexing Texas and it habitants. Texas annexation cause such dispute in-between the United States population. The dispute was cause by the disagreement of the expansion, and the problems that came along. The ones against expanding territory argue that there would be afterward problems; which, could affect the United States ruling system and population increase and diversity. On the other hand, the ones in favor saw the benefit of obtaining territory and population.
The Manifest Destiny is the idea of continental expansion by the United States, from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans, which naturally occurred out of a deep want and need to explore and conquer new lands and establish new borders. This idea contributed to several wars, including the US-Mexican War.
From the time European colonists and settlers first set foot on this continent, they brought with them the beliefs, the ideas, that would evolve into the American ideology known today as Manifest Destiny. Still, it was not until 1834 that the newspaper editor, John L. O'Sullivan, is believed to have first coined the phrase “Manifest Destiny” when he said in his article "Annexation", "...our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions" (O'Sullivan 2). Manifest Destiny produced many conflicts, like the Mexican American War, caused the genocide of multiple nations, and yielded what the United States of America is today. From the time they first settled in the
The best way to put it is that they lived after the concept of “Manifest Destiny”, which is the term which “became shorthand for this expansionist spirit. They thought of an old belief. That old belief was that God intended Americans to reach all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Americans did not really care about National boundaries, which meant that they just moved. 300.000 men, women and children moved because of disease, starvation, and then the natural barrier of the Rocky Mountains became a problem, and Indian attacks. They traveled overland to Oregon and California.
“Limiting our greatness and checking the fulfillment of our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions.” (“John O’Sullivan Declares”). This quote from an article by John O’Sullivan, not only managed to help create the mindset of this time, but also helped coin the name, Manifest Destiny. In the 19th century, or more specifically 1845, the leading idea among a lot of Americans is that they deserved the land from coast to coast. This ideal is know as Manifest Destiny. The idea came about when the journalist, John O’Sullivan, wrote about Texas and California falling away from Mexico, and joining America. He wrote that nothing can stand in the way of Americans obtaining all the land in between the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean. Thanks to the help of the Transcontinental Railroad, John L. O'Sullivan’s writing on Manifest Destiny, and John Gast’s painting American Progress, the culture of the United States of America during the time of Manifest Destiny is vastly focused on expansion and conquering.
... The right of our manifest destiny to over spread to possess that whole of the continent which Providence has given to us for the development of the great experiment of liberty and federative development of the self-government entrusted to us. It is right such as that of the tree to the space of the air and earth suitable for the full expansion of its principle and destiny of growth”. These famous words were spoken by John L. O’Sullivan. O’Sullivan made his name in 1845 as an editor and columnist where he wrote in the local news the quote above concerning the expansion of the idea of “the great experiment of liberty”. The term manifest destiny became widely used at this time to describe the belief that the westward expansion of the United States through the American continents was justified and bound to happen. Although O’Sullivan did not intend for manifest destiny to be a forceful expansion of territory, he believed it was an inevitable occurrence to come. After the boom of O’Sullivan’s manifest destiny article, he later went on to publish more of these manifest destiny topic based articles and became a famous face of the westward expansion era. The Monroe doctrine which was adopted in the year of 1823, was the closest America ever came to the manifest destiny official policy; but it put European nations on notice that they would in fact defend the other nations of the western hemisphere from further colonization.
The Manifest Destiny was the name given to the Anglo-American (white) expansion into the West. The Manifest Destiny was based on an idea that white Americans were superior people who believed in God. Americans were to populate North America “sea to shining sea” and spread the religion of Christianity. The Manifest Destiny displayed American’s confidence. Americans moved west for more land, the Manifest Destiny also uplifted American’s freedom and democracy. And it encouraged independence. The United States used the Manifest Destiny to start a war with Mexico from1846 until 1848. The Manifest Destiny communicated American claims to western lands, at once highlighting the nation’s superiority and offering a solution to national anxieties. Ironically, the new territories exacerbated sectional divisions and caused the civil war (Bailey et al., 2015, p 319, and Hardesty 2015).
