time in jail, Allesandro had a dream where he saw Maria in a garden . She supposedly gave him
lilies, that burned in his hands. When he awoke, he became a "changed man". When he was
released 27-years-later, he went directly to Maria's mother and begged her forgiveness which she
accepted. Maria Goretti was beatified by Pope Pius XII in a ceremony at Saint Peter's Basilica on
April 27, 1947. "Saint Maria is called a martyr because she fought against Alessandro's attempts
at sexual sin; however, the most important aspects of her story are how she forgave her attacker -
her concern for her enemy extending even beyond death - and the miracle her forgiveness

Raymond of Capua deduces in his book The Life of Saint Catherine of Siena that the marriage between Catherine and Christ was granted by the Virgin Mary based on the mercy Mary bestows on everyone who prays to her. He writes, Catherine “turns to one who distributes her graces most generously who, being unable to refuse even sinners, and never rejects anyone, who gives to wise and foolish alike…How can such a one fail to hear an ardent innocent young girl?” (32). Maria is a religious mother of six who throughout the book she is very close minded and unwilling to change her plans or way of life no matter the influence. She finds comfort in the steady life of farming and finds her husband 's ideals to be idiotic and unrealistic. These two statements are very important because they are the backbone of the whole book. These are the strongest parts that support the women she is. She is so hand in hand with God that she doesn’t even once criticize the reasons she’s in captive but as I have stated before, she blames herself for not praying enough. In the sixth remove she explains her circumstance, her being surrounded by her former enemies amidst no Christians at all but herself. She exclaims, “Oh the experience that I have had of the goodness of God, to me and mine!” Without any form of disbelief she praises the kindness of God. The beauty of her relationship with God is that she mentions no matter what kind of situation she is in whether it be near death or with luxuries. And she sees every good thing that happens to her as a sign of God. To sum it up, everything that has happened to her was pre-planned and the grace of God.
