On September 2nd I took a trip to the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory in Atlanta. The museum included many art exhibits from ancient cultures around the world. Including pieces from South America, Greece, and Egypt with larger exhibits as well as African and Asian cultures with smaller exhibits.

My Humanities Art Experience took place at the Columbus, GA Museum, located on Wynnton Road. I really enjoyed my experience at the museum. It was my first time visiting an American museum. I saw many pieces of fine art, some of which I will list below.

The museum I chose to visit was the Dali Museum mainly because I have been wanting to check it out since I first moved down here to Florida three years ago. My sister has always been a huge Salvador Dali fan and even has a tattoo of his painting titled “The Elephants” on her side. I am looking forward to experiencing more of his paintings other than his most popular works of art. I am also hoping this experience will give me a greater appreciation for him as an artist by seeing the diversity of his works. What I am least looking forward to is trying to find one work of art that really stands out to me enough to write this paper about. I am sure I am going to find multiple pieces of art that I will love.

It must have been 13 years or so since I have been to the art museum, back in elementary school, on a one of a kind field trip. 13 years is way too long to have been away from the art museum, as my experience this year reminded me that. It was a beautiful, sunny October day, although it felt like July, and it was an even better day to talk a walk through the vast, mesmerizing pieces of art that the museum has to offer. The North Carolina Museum of Art provides an abundance of artwork from various time periods, cultures, and one can find art anywhere from Egyptian, to classical, to modern and contemporary art. Dale Chihuly is an American glass blower (Dale Patrick Chihuly, 2015). The piece of art I’ll mainly be looking at is Citron and Cobalt Tower. This piece was located directly in the center of the museum as soon as you walked in to the show room. It caught my eye and I knew immediately what I wanted to do my paper on.

The exhibit is located at Texas State University, San Marcos and I visited on December 1st. The titles of the work I chose was The Photographer, Getting Even, Carousel Bartender, Chandelier and Alex’s Music Room. The year this work was published was in 2003. The art shown is photographs in black and white and is hand tinted with color oils. The subject of this art is to showcase events in everyday life. By expressing it emotional and creativity by capturing the things many people wouldn't think that are a realty Paint of the artwork is really has a lot of going on outside of the main attraction. In Alex’s music’s room the first thing that captures your eyes is all the red in the painting and the violins, harper and the cymbal on the floor. When you look closer into the painting you can see crazy details. Like the lions laying around in the music room and the candles in the pieced looks as if it's a person not really a candle. The decoration on the chandelier looks like there is really gems hanging in the art. In the art piece Getting Even its isn’t as detailed but it makes you wonder how did Schenck catch this moment on his camera. The painting its taking place in some field of flowers. It’s late at night and it looks like a man is about to kill another person but the other human being is just standing there. I guess the person is getting even by homicide since that’s the name of the painting. The painting doesn’t really focus on the people in it. It focusses more on the scenery because its more emphasized in the painting. The people are more a shadow and in the background I would say. My favorite painting out of the five would have to the be the Carousel Bartender you can see it in my expression. When I was looking at the art this was the first painting that caught my attention. The exhibit that I viewed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art was one about European Art between the years 1100-1500. This was a series of paintings, sculptures, architecture, and tapestry of the Medieval and Early Renaissance as well as objects from the Middle East. This exhibit was an important part of the history of the Philadelphia Museum of Art because for the first time, Italian, Spanish, and Northern European paintings from the John G. Johnson collection were shown. It gave me a good idea of what the paintings were like in these four centuries and reflected ideas of both the east and the west.

The Elder Sister is a painting by a well-known French artist William-Adolphe Bouguereau. This work of art was completed by William in 1869. As a result of research made on this painting, it was found that the painting was anonymously given to the Museum of Fine Arts Houston as a gift in 1992. According to the museum, this was a gift of an anonymous lady in memory of her father. Since then this amazing work of art has been a part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine arts, Houston; becoming one of the most notable highlights in the museums painting collection. Its dimensions are 51¼ × 38¼ in (130.2 × 97.2 cm) and the frame is 67½ × 55 × 5½ in (171.5 × 139.7 × 14 cm).

While in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, I traveled through the different galleries

It resides in The Caroline Wiess Law Building. I will be comparing and contrasting these two pieces of artwork

The two works of art that I have chosen to analyze are 1) Jordan Casteel. Miles and JoJo. 2014. Oil on canvas, 54” x 72” and 2) Aaron Fowler. He Was. 2015. Mixed media, 134” x 165” x 108”. The themes that these works of art represent in regards to the exhibit are love, family, and pain. However, they also fall into other thematic categories. The main theme that seems to apply to both “Miles and JoJo” and “He Was” is Human Experience. Additionally, these arts differ in some ways.

The portrait I chose from the museum is The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit, 1882 by John Singer Sargent primarily because of the content of the portrait. As I was walking through the museum I noticed many different portraits but this one stuck out a lot because of how the girls in the picture are all in different areas of the portrait and the fact that it has a much more mysterious vibe to it. Sargent depicts four daughters; two of which are standing between two large fancy porcelain vases, one standing alone to the opposite side of the vase and the youngest daughter alone with a single doll. Sargent paints the subjects highlighting their clothing and expression the most – he focusses a lot on the detail of the models in the portrait rather
