Analysis of The Letter From Birmingham Jail. Martin Luther King Jr. was a baptist minister and civil rights activist who made major advancements in civil rights for blacks. He led many nonviolent protests in Alabama during the 1950s and 1960s. King was the president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Southern Christian Leadership Conference is an African American organization known for its association with Dr. Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement. It was created in an effort to replicate peaceful demonstrations to abolish segregation and end disenfranchisement for blacks in the south. SCLC is significant because throughout the course we have observed various groups or organizations fighting for the civil liberties of African Americans such as Black Panther Party and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Dr. King and the SCLC was often criticized for fighting violence with non-violence. This is a group committed to achieving full equality for African American through non-violence. As a role of being president of SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference), Martin Luther traveled across the country and around the world giving lectures of non-violent protest and civil rights as well as meetings with religious figures, activists, and political leaders (Martin Luther King Jr., History).

Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and social activist, who led the Civil Rights Movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968.

The main goal of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) was to coordinate and support nonviolent direct action to end segregation and provide new leadership for the now prosperous civil rights movement. Between 1957 and 1968, King covered over six million miles and gave over twenty-five hundred talks, showing up wherever there was an issue of protest, injustice, or action(Martin Luther King Jr.-Biography). It was also in these years that King organized a monumental protest in Birmingham, Alabama. drawing enough attention that soon enough the entire world was aware of what was going on, providing what he called a “coalition of conscience”(Martin Luther King Jr.-Biography).

Under the leadership of Martin Luther King, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), bought the Black Civil Rights Movement and his desegregation concepts to Birmingham in 1963 for several reasons. The most pivotal of these reasons being his African American racial status and his Christian faith which drove him to fight for the rights his people deserved.

With the success of the Montgomery boycott, black leaders began a new plan for the civil rights movement. In January of 1957, southern black ministers started the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Martin Luther King became the first president. "The Southern Christian Leadership Conference was the first civil rights organization led by black residents of the South, and the first to concentrate all of its attention on fighting Jim Crow within the region."2 It was at this time that Martin Luther King proposed his ideals of nonviolent resistance.

The Civil Rights Movement had several pros however there are cons to every situation. The suffering of people were cured by the medicine of the great personality that still stand as the role model of the world, Martin Luther King Jr. He cured the people with the speeches they delivered and the letters they wrote. The letters and speeches delivered during this movement had been very inspirational in which it made more people want to become a part of this immense movement. King used tactics of nonviolence and civil disobedience that was based on his Christian beliefs. King became known for his public speaking ability and continued to rise and speak within his ministry. King graduated from Morehouse with a Bachelor’s degree in sociology and enrolled in Crozier Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania and graduated with a Bachelor of Divinity. King used nonviolent but confrontational tactics.
