The two readings I choose to compare to the Marywood core values, which we covered in class was A Good Man: Rediscovering My Father, Sargent Shriver, by Mark Shriver and Still I Rise by Maya Angelou. The two represent both the same, but different core values. Differently the reading A Good Man: Rediscovering My Father, Sargent Shriver represents the catholic identity and service. Both of the readings reading represents respect. The two readings in one way represent respect because in Still I Rise she shows how even though people may say this and that a person will still rise and overcome the harshness from others either it’s because someone get upset because you rise when they want to see you fall as well as receiving respect from people who
“Still I Rise,” written by poet Maya Angelou, has a blend of tones. Some are playful, funny, angry, confident, and bitter. However, the poem’s tone, as the title implies, is conquering."Still I Rise" is a poem about strength, perseverance, and confirmation. It is about what is expected of a person and what that person is able to do in spite of the expectations.
In the poems, 'Still I Rise' and 'I, too, Sing America', Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes illustrate the idea of celebrating black pride to overcome racism. Through metaphor and symbolism in their poems they show the significance of the African American struggle for equality. In 'Still I Rise', Maya Angelou shows how the black race is battling to overcome racism and hardship. She uses the metaphor, "I'm a black ocean", to show how the black race has been oppressed. It shows that they have come back stronger, like waves that crash back to the shore. The line, "welling and swelling", symbolizes the past that is rooted in struggle of black people - how they have been hurt and destroyed by the "hatefulness" towards them.
‘Still I Rise’ show other aspects of the problems that women face. Within the poem, Angelou uses repetition to accentuate powerful imagery. She repeats “I Rise” throughout the poem and frequently leaves it as a two-word line. This draws, even more, attention to the image of her continuously rising up against anyone may put her down. Angelou also employs the use of a
The poet uses repetition of the word ‘rise’ to show that she has overcome and risen above racism. In the line, ‘you may trod me in the very dirt but still, like dust ill rise’ it expresses to the reader one of the key ideas in her poem, that no matter how unjustly others may treat her because of her colour, she will not be defeated and will stand up again. The main symbol in that line is the rising dust. For dust to rise, it must be unsettled from the ground in order for it to leave and rise,
The ballad still I rise is composed by Maya Angelou; an African American writer, instructor and social liberties extremist. The ballad's strict importance is a snide reaction towards the general population who look down on the speaker. To the storyteller, the sonnet figuratively depicts her quality to dependably survive the fight against individuals' feedback of her and her predecessors. All around, this ballad conveys the message of the human's fantastic quality and capacity to defeat hurt. In any case, the fundamental and most essential message this ballad gives is the storyteller's quality to counter against separation of races and sexual orientation; which offers seek after other people who experience the ill effects of a similar difficulty.
There are many characteristics and themes that make “Still I Rise” an example of postmodern poetry. During this era, the focus was on the individual. This poem was written from the perspective of an individual, detailing her life, struggles, and her reaction to her circumstances. Postmodern literature was also more open minded, presenting many different points of view. This poem addressed many hot topics of the time: slavery, racism, and sexism. The use of imagery and symbolism was
Marywood defines empowerment as “Access to education that enables all to achieve their full potential to live as conscientious citizens in a pluralistic society.” While they define excellence as, “Manifesting Marywood University's pursuit of the highest level of achievement in support of Sanctitas, Scientia, Sanitas (Holiness, Knowledge, Health).” These two have similar meanings, trying to express to always try your best to succeed. Still I Rise, starts off its stanzas talking about put downs, but ends them with positive feedback of never giving up. There are many times in life where times are tough, and nothing seems like it will ever be right, however you always have to keep your head up and think about the positive side. The poem never lets the bad take over, it always finds the positive end. It states how “You can write it down in history, with bitter sweet lies, but like dust he will rise.” This sentence is a perfect example of excellence and empowerment. Without the two, the writer would have given up, but instead he saw the positive outcome of every
In the story “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou, the story is about a narrator who ignores abusive actions from her haters and soars above them. In this story, the narrator says “You may shoot me with your words, you may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise” (“Still I Rise”, pg 1). To be powerful means to have control over their identity. When the narrator says “You may kill me with your hatefulness,” she says that people hate her so much, that they verbally abuse her. If she did not have control over who she will be, she would not have the ability to choose who influences her life, making her powerless. Alternatively, she does have control, so she chooses to ignore them, proving that if people can control their identity, then they are powerful. When the narrator said “I’ll rise,” she meant no matter what they do to her, she would not be influenced by their words and continue to grow powerful. People can control who they are and who they will become like the narrators in the stories “We Wear the Mask” and “Still I Rise.” If they did not have control over their identity, then they would not be in a position to hide their true emotions or to choose to ignore the hateful words of people that try to bring her
While on the other hand, Still I Rise by Maya Angelou inspires people by giving them strength and letting them know that anything is possible if you fight for it. These two works of literature also have roots of Marywood’s core values in them. Empowerment and respect are these two core values. First, in A Good Man, empowerment is represented throughout the book.
Every culture and community have their respective values and ethics followed by its citizens. Similarly, Marywood University has its five unique core values which the faculty and students have been practicing, ever since the existence of this university. The core values preached at this campus consist of Excellence, Service, Empowerment, Catholic Identity, and Respect. Each value has its own significance in making up the environment of Marywood University.
Building my relationship with God is my priority because my faith is extremely important to me. Although I grew up with Christian values I lost my way while on my journey with God. Around the time I began high school, I was influenced by my peers and started to go down the wrong path. I did not realize the damage I was doing to myself and my family. It wasn't until I had to experience life the hard way and wanted to change the way I was living. After I went through my rebellious stage, I wanted to make God my priority and live a life that served him because it was him who helped me get through rough times. Azusa will help assist me in building my relationship with God by using the values of the four cornerstones. These cornerstone values will
“Still I Rise” by African American author, poet, and civil rights activist; Maya Angelou, and “Invictus” by William E. Henley, are the two poems about perseverance and determination. The poems center on how people’s negative thought and action shouldn't define other people’s true identity. No matter what happen in life, their is still hope and aspiration to keep people’s faith on their present life, rather than wasting their time and energy on their past life . Although they bear some superficial similarities, the difference between “Still I Rise” and “Invictus” are clear.
In the poem it says, "You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, but still, like air, I'll rise." (Angelou). This quote is showing that the writer is overcoming all of the hurt and pain that people are causing her. She is rising above and standing on to her feet. She is not letting the words and actions of others bring her down to their level.
Throughout ‘Still I RIse’, Angelou repeatedly reiterates ‘I’ll Rise’ to show her profound personality, whilst, Harrison’s lexical field of anguish conveys a lack of identity; Angelou’s use of ‘I’ll Rise’ delineates persistence and perseverance. The speaker uses this effective phrase on numerous occasions to emphasize how she will resist the oppression and stand proud. Moreover, Angelou’s speaker uses repeated rhetorical questions and an antithesis to again bring this perception of dedication and stamina. This is evident when said, “...to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes?” The consecutive rhetorical questions used here show determination and strength. Angelou’s application of “Bowed head and lowered eyes?” suggests submissiveness to challenge tyranny. This recapitulates perseverance and persistence. An antithesis is used to show how she falls, yet, she is still rising: “Shoulders falling down like teardrops.” The contrast of ‘shoulders falling’ and ‘teardrops’ shows the belligerence and controversy but still gracefully and with refinement. On the contrary, in ‘The Bright Light of Sarajevo’ there is a dark and secretive atmosphere. This is evident when said, “Dark boy-shape leads dark girl-shape away to share one coffee”. Harrison exploits ‘dark’ to create this lexical field of despair and concealment. This concealment shows the lack of identity and insignificance. Furthermore, Harrison uses ‘candlelit cafe’ to devise a hidden and clandestine ambience. The application of ‘leads’ suggests mystery and the boy having an authoritative character . Throughout the poem, many themes are created, nonetheless, the most prominent is this matter of concealed emotions. Contrasting of confidence and uncertainty creates this conflict between one’s identity and the lack of identity.
Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise” takes place in the mind of Maya Angelou. She is talking about someone who is saying bad things about her. Even though they are saying bad things about her she won’t let it bring her down she will rise. She shows her Confidence by saying that she will rise, another way she is showing her Confidence is by being confident in her heritage, and her Confidence is evident through her displays of literary devices.
