Many people today rely on television and social media to stay up to date on current events. However, are those people really staying informed by what they’re reading or watching? Is the person they’re watching the news acting biased? What if someone doesn’t pay attention to the news at all? With the near endless amount of content on televisions and computers, many people have alternatives to watching the news and informing themselves. Today, it is imperative that, as a society, we inform ourselves ad stay up to date on the activities of our government. How is it beneficial to society if we are ignoring current events and issues that could affect them? Many don’t realize how easily accessible news today is. Today, six corporations control …show more content…
This plays a large role in influencing our beliefs on different issues. Some content shown by the mass media doesn’t affect us any way. Bill O’Reilly receives close to 3 million viewers a day (Curtis). Bill O’Reilly and Fox News are notorious for constantly using the same stories. Even two years after it occurred, the Benghazi incident is still discussed as if it were relevant today. Every time content such as Benghazi is shown on a news network, those millions of people are wasting their time and could be catching up on actual current events. The media can easily influence public opinion too. Following 9/11, mass media followed accusations by government officials and authorities that pointed toward al Qaeda as the group that carried out the attack, which caused the majority of the U.S. public to support the war on terrorism (Curtis). Every American can tell you what the war on terrorism is. Ten years ago, the majority of people did support the war. Today, more and more people seem to be against the war on terrorism. One reason it could be is that the war on terrorism has not been well for the economy. So much money, various resources, and time have gone into the war on terrorism. Politicians even use advertisements to reach out …show more content…
Only around 4 out of every 10 eligible voters voted. Not even a one-third of those voters were probably young adults. Those young adults who just turned eighteen should be willing to exercise their right to vote. Why waste that right? Only around 4 out of every 10 eligible voters voted. How do you expect any sort of change if you don’t vote? Many of the people you see complain about the results of an election probably didn’t vote. What would these elections have looked like if there were a 60% turnout or even a 70% turnout? Some of those elections would probably have a different outcome. Social media can also play a vital role in influencing the political decisions of its users. Multiple studies have been conducted measuring Facebook’s impact on young people. Some suggest that young Internet users are more influenced by other young people online. Others suggest young voters seem to trust older users’ evaluations more (Lee). People who intend to vote need to understand that they have to think for these issues themselves. There is nothing wrong with discussing these issues with others online, but why constantly let others decide for you? Politicians have to use social media
It is important that news broadcasting networks do not let personal bias effect the story that’s being told to its audience. People who watch the news, opinions are heavily influenced by the information given to them. Viewers think their opinion is original but are unaware that the information they receive is biased and is meant to influence and form their opinions about a certain topic or argument. Many believe that the news is unbiased and factual because journalist or experts are providing them with evidence. When, in fact, these news outlets are filled with producers, reporters, and writers, who share the same viewpoints. This is groupthink and groupthink is very prominent in news broadcasting networks. Groupthink is when a group of people who share the same ideologies make decisions as a group. In an interview with Fox Business’s John Stossel, Bernie Goldberg explains that groupthink effects the viewer because like-minded people at news networks only show the audience one-side of an argument or story because of their personal opinions on a the topic. This means that news
Media plays a huge role in today's society. Media, in its many forms, can be very persuasive and can change how people view a certain topic. The past few years, media has greatly affected how people feel about topics such as: gay rights, abortion, racism, and anything political. Depending on what site, or source you are on, media can depict the topic you research however it wants. It has been argued that there are political bias in media, which is not wrong. You can find just about anything in whichever political view you want. When talking politics, there are multiple media outlets that are party-based. Even in print, you can find just about anything in favor of what you believe if you look for it. Media does a fantastic job of manipulating people to believe certain things without the audience realizing it. The media provides constant information about politics, and in more times than not, political rather than professional. In this lesson, we learned about liberals and conservatives and how political parties can be affected through media bias and public opinion.
In a letter that Ta-Nehisi Coates once wrote to his son he said “It is so easy to look away, to live with the fruits of our history and to ignore the great evil done in all of our names. But you and I have never truly had that luxury” (Coates). In his letter, Mr. Coates warns his son to never loose the internal battle between indifference and what is right. This is a constant struggle society faces around the world, and often loses. The battle against indifference has been a losing battle in the past and even more recently throughout the world and as society loses to indifference it gains guilt as if guilt were war debt. The guilt of society is growing at an exponential rate, where countries around the world would rather stick their heads
People must carefully sift through the abundant amounts of information from the media in order to find factual information and avoid dissonance in their lives from false media messages. Political, scientific, and social publications can include bias from the journalists, so kudos to the media for finding inventive ways to craft stories in order to sell their publications. Separating fact from fiction has always been difficult and it is increasingly becoming more difficult to discern as journalists have hidden agendas and tainted points of view. One must be vigilant and skeptical and gather information from many different sources in order to weed out bias and misinformation.
Mass media plays a crucial role currently, people share information from increasing ways, although there are more streams to know the news happened around the world, it becomes a problem that citizens lose the ability to recognize if they are true or wrong, because too many different media companies have their own claim and biases about those news, to some extent, medias operate people’s life and thinking. This comparative analysis will discuss the news of which the governor election that happened in Virginia was reported by New York Post and CNN with various biases. They have opposite bias though selection and omission, word choice and tone, bias by headline and camera angles.
With the help of the media, the people get all of the facts and are able to form their own opinion about what is going on, who is responsible for events, and how future events can be avoided. Explaining how future events can be avoided is beneficial if the government is planning on implementing new policies to thwart future events.
Argument toward certain topics began because the bias found in the mass media. According to University Wire, “[the media is the main reason why we’re]politically divided because the fundamental flaw in our mass media system is that we have two sides.” What two sides are we talking about? We’re talking about the democrats and republicans or in other words, liberal and conservative sides. Liberals are those who believe in changes and conservative are those who believe in traditional values. What is responsible for causing the nation to fall apart? Mass media. The three powerhouse in media are Fox News, MSNBC and CNN, they tend to be bias in their news reports. When the media give biased news, certain viewers tend to go along with what the
It is no mystery that the media has much influence in constructing social norms and shaping political dissertations. The expeditious growth in the media, during the previous years, has meant that individuals are able to get many distinct perspectives on the news and with all these opinions thrown at the audience, it is safe to believe that it aids the public to create their own opinions. But is it? Is the media even trying to be informative to the public anymore? It doesn’t seem so. People rely on all media sources to report factual information which helps the public obtain a much different understanding of what’s going on in the world. Except in today’s era, most of the information is altered to fit a desired narrative. Their widespread exposure empowers them to convey their notions to the public, regardless of the public's awareness. In my analysis on the bias in mainstream media, I strongly believe that it is almost impossible to get a sincere nor forthright answer on any important topic, because the media seems to target a specific audience with expectations of creating an imbalance in dispersing information, sustaining rivalries, maximizing profits and increasing racial tension.
“Every time you silence someone you make yourself a prisoner of your own action because you deny yourself the right to hear something” (Hitchens), for several years, our nation has become divided over the thought of a biased media. While one side argues that it is being done for commercial purposes, the other claims it has become a Liberal tactic to promote hatred towards conservatives. Liberals also declare how conservatives have created a ‘fake news’ epidemic. Is there a bias in the media and how does it affect our government and society?
Oh, well imagine, as major news/media sites criticize the tragedies and successes of the world before actually reporting about it. You don’t have to imagine this. Its real and it is everywhere. Biased media distorts the real events and changes the way the public views the world. Even some media sources would not tell the truth just to pursue the liberal agenda. Ted Cruz, a 2016 presidential candidate, say “The questions asked in [the Republican Presidential Debate] illustrate why the American people don’t trust the media.” Now, Mr. Cruz has a point. A majority of the media is leaning toward the liberal side of the house.
In the 2016 election the questions of the mainstream media and their potential biases and allegiances were brought up. In the election cycle, many media institutions refused or give emphasis to stories that would hurt their favored candidate's chances of winning the election. Questions about the validity of certain claims media institutions were making or even how reliable, they were at portraying information were brought up. Media biases are potential shifts towards one side of a political argument done by a member of the mainstream press (Daxter). Media bias does not include very opinionated pieces where the purpose is clear, but rather biases in tone when delivering the news (Ferdan). Media bias can also include subtle positioning that portrays a candidate as favorable/unfavorable depending on way of their presentation. Media bias occurs in tone of delivering the news rather an outright statement. Government regulation often known as “big government” is when the government attempts to regulate a medium or principle. Although media bias has the potential to perpetuate a false narrative that can influence many voters, should not be regulated by the government because of the media’s lack of influence and the constitutional right to the media’s freedom of speech.
2016’s presidential campaign along with the campaign trail that leading up to it, brought the long existing issue of media bias our society, into the light. For generations, the American people and all who live in our nation have relied on platforms of mass media, such as the news, to inform them of the events occurring in the world, and for generations people have listened to media that is meant to be unbiased—so what changed? While there are some well-known media outlets whose bias is traditional and understood (such as the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal) and some outlets for whom bias is part of the business model (such as Fox News), in most cases, bias is really based upon the perception of the media consumer. In other words, people are looking for affirmation of their existing beliefs, and see media outlets that don’t give them affirmation as biased. With the use of personal testimony as well as Ph.D. research, and class lectures I will discuss that while we believe the media itself is biased, it is actually just how we interpret the news and information we take in, and answer the question, has the media’s level of bias changed?
The commencement of mass media has allowed the world to incorporate politics in their daily lives from television, newspapers, radio stations, and social media. Media is a powerful tool used to get information out to the public especially in the United States and can influence the opinions of the public on any issue. Media bias is when any mass media puts their own opinion in the news to influence Americans and mostly uneducated voters to believe one side of a story they hear. “The vast amount of unreliable information available on the Internet, and its potential for misleading consumers, has also been noted”(Aliprandini, Isadora). Proving that the media does have a huge role in providing misleading information to the public. When Americans automatically assume the information they hear or see is correct, it becomes severely controversial to party polarization depending on conservative or liberal views incorporated in the media. Not only is the media bias and misleading, the media also wants to maximize its viewers and base their discussions and reports off of people's interests by reporting what people want to hear, rather than giving all news equal amount of airtime so they won't lose viewers and can profit more from the viewers interests. What Americans watch, read or listen to everyday are bias on both sides of politics and “allows reporters and media owners to slant news stories in favor of particular groups or interests” (Aliprandini,Isadora).
Media bias can be seen today on every type of media coverage that exists. Media bias is how the person reporting the information perceives it, whether through their language when they speak about the subject or their choice of words used in the article they wrote. A trending and important topic, subject to such media bias is genetically modified organisms. These GMOs have modified DNA which leads to better traits. For example, some modifications are to be able to withstand lower or higher temperatures to growing bigger and at a faster rate. The perception of GMOs in society is heavily split into two factions. One side is supporters of GMOs as they see it as a necessity in today’s society of billions of people. The other side is the people against GMOs who believe GMOs are not actually beneficial to the society and may cause negative effects in overall human health. GMOs is profoundly shown biasedly through people in all types of media coverage, like magazines, newspapers, radio segments, the internet, or televised news segments since the people reporting use multiple fallacies.
Around the United States the instantly recognizable sound of a Donald Trump tweet rings on millions of phones. The owners of those phones glance down to read a strongly opinionated statement on former presidents. Consequently, this situation can only escalate, as the president's every word should be highly regarded. If the most influential person in the country says something incredibly bias others will be bound to follow. While Donald Trump may not have been the initial spark towards the bias revolution, his constant tweets are feeding the flame. However, he is not the only one expressing his opinions as it is the fifteen year old girl complaining about a teacher, a 24 year old female posting about not being able to find a job like her male companion, or a newspaper only interviewing white males on a subject such as racial discrimination. There are numerous causes to this increasingly biased culture, but most precedent are people's backgrounds, the growing dependence on mass media, and politics.
