Math 's Relationship With Astronomy

Math is often seen as a difficult subject to consume and fully understand. Many of us have experienced times where we become frustrated with mathematics and make it seem impossible. The wish to understand math were especially impossible to African-Americans in segregated America where not every child was given quality education. Katherine Johnson, an African-American NASA mathematician, experienced the inability to attend advanced math courses due to her race. It came with great effort to be where she is today in society. Her works were hidden and barely spoken about. However, her legacy stands with history.

Astronomy, is for me, why we are even here at all. As humans [and wizards], we owe our lives to discovering our own universe and beyond, it is our utmost dedication that we discover facts and information on everything around us. People have dedicated months, years, to discovering what truly makes us part of the universe, we have achieved and advanced so much just by studying our stars, our solar system and our neighbouring planets.

According to Alan Bass, math is the building block upon which every science originates; which opens the doors to higher education and better income potential. However there are many high earners that never graduated college like Albert Einstein who states “everybody is a genius. But, if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid”. Not everyone is good at math.

Einstein invents Calculus when this is invented everything seems to revolve around mathematics and Science.

He discovered the laws of planetary motion, explained how gravity works, and invented calculus, a new branch of mathematics that proved invaluable to modern scientists and mathematicians.

Prior to Galileo’s time, the Greek and medieval mind, science was a kind of formalism, a means of coordinating data, which had no bearing on the ultimate reality of things. The point was to give order to complicated data, and all that mattered was the hypothesis that was simplest to understand and most convenient. Astronomy and mathematics were regarded as the playthings of intellectuals. They were accounted as having neither philosophical nor theological relevance. There was genuine puzzlement among Churchmen that they had to get involved in a quarrel over planetary orbits.

It is often said that math and science are two subjects that go hand in hand. Much of the work that scientists do, is conduct experiments to produce data. In most cases, the data involves numbers. Whether it involves weight, speed, time, temperature, etc., that data is mostly quantifiable. In order to solve problems, scientists, as well as students striving to be scientists must use the basic forms of algebra to accurately solve their calculations. Being a chemistry major, I have found that as a student progresses to higher level chemistry, the courses become more math intensive, this being a challenge for those who did not succeed in the following college algebra topics.

     From the period of 1145AD – the late 16th century, many mathematicians developed on algebraic concepts. However, it was not until the 1680’s that the most remarkable discoveries were made using algebra.
