When considering this question, I though deep an hard about the character traits that I actively display. As I thought about my leadership style, my mind constantly began to think about the influential leaders that I respect and view as role models. With my leadership style in mind and the words of these powerful leaders at hand, I synthesized the two to clearly describe my characteristics as a leader. I came to the conclusion that there are five key reasons why others recognize and respect me as a leader.
First and foremost, I am extremely passionate about the work I do - whether it be through community service, cheerleading, or another activity. Whenever I engage in an activity I always give it one hundred and ten percent, going above and beyond the expectations. In 2011, Maya Angelou, a leader that I highly respect, stated that her mission in life “is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” I truly value these words and the truth they portray. In leadership, I work my hardest to live by these principles because of my genuine care for others and the activities in which I participate. Others should be led to follow my lead because of my passion.
Additionally, I display

Whenever someone else makes an accomplishment, small or large, they deserve all respect and recognition for their hard work. I constantly work to build others up and ensure that their efforts do not go unnoticed. John C. Maxwell, author of The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, notes that “If you are a leader, you should never forget that everyone needs encouragement. And everyone who receives it - young or old, successful or less-than-successful, unknown or famous - is changed by it.” As humans we are driven by the recognition of others, and I recognize the value of encouragement. By building others up, I have the power to assist others in their development as
“If Joe lost the fight we were back to slavery and beyond help.”I think that view
Over the past couple of months, we discussed several traits, skills, and behaviors that have contributed to the success of both past and present leaders. Intelligence, integrity, charisma, and confidence are some of the traits that characterize many of these leaders. Interpersonal skills, oratory skills, and conceptual skills are some of the more important skills that helped to shape their leadership style. Some of these skills go hand in hand with the traits that are essential for strong leadership. Meanwhile, the behaviors that drive these leaders include inspiring and motivating others, collaboration, having a strategic perspective and trust. Combined, these traits, skills and behaviors make for effective leadership.
I think that if you were to ask my close friends or family, they would say that I am a natural leader and hardworking. As the captain of my lacrosse team, I am a leader on the field. In this position even though I strive to be the best I can, I find it more rewarding to watch my team succeed and improve above myself. I’m very passionate about motivating my team mates to be better and not just bossing them around. You can also find me as a leader of the Student Council at my school. Here I have been in charge of and organized countless events like the CB East’s annual Homecoming. This example also goes to show how hard working I am. I take these school events very seriously and I want every student to have a great time; I stay after school for
What characteristics make up a good leader? A few that might come to mind are bravery, being inspirational and helpful, and being able to present and write well enough to captivate an audience. These are the characteristics that made Maya Angelou a good leader.
I am a leader that leads by example. Once people see the effort and passion I put in to my goals, it makes them
Growing up in a small town, it is crucial that every individual get involved. This has pushed me to stay active in athletics, National Honor Society, student government, FFA, band, choir, play production, speech, and CYO. I take every organization I am involved with seriously and have earned some leadership positions: FFA News Reporter, Volleyball & Basketball Captain, Class President, and Student Council Member. It is an honor to hold these leadership positions and be a positive role model for the younger generation. I am able to support those younger than me and demonstrate a hard work ethic. By using my leadership and communication skills I have been able to influence teammates and fellow members to have a positive attitude
The other quality of a leader that I exhibit is hard work and dedication. I do my best to make each assignment or activity I do the best it can possibly be. I only ever miss school, practice or work if I have no other option available to me, and when I do miss, I try to make up my work as quickly as I can. I use the drive that I have in school, swim, and work to strengthen my leadership qualities.
The inspiring African-American woman born in 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri has been one of the many influential voices of our time. Educating herself and having love for the arts helped mold her life into what she imagined becoming a poet, memoirist, novelist, educator, dramatist, producer, actress, historian, filmmaker, and even a civil rights activist. During her early years while still in High School Dr. Angelou experienced brutal racial discrimination directing her to the values of traditional African-Americans.
I will always encourage people to do their best and will always guide people into the right path. I will always promote excellent behavior and will exemplify it as well. Leadership is not all about telling others what to do in my opinion. I believe that leadership is about accepting responsibilities and working together as a group to make excellent decisions. Being a leader comes in when you need to lead someone in the right path and standing up for what is right.
A true leader stands high on on the pillars of success: dedication, servitude, respectability, and honesty. The mark of a fulfilled life is not one who has collected many awards, not one who has an insurmountable amount of money and fame, it is one who has touched the most souls in his journey of life. A leader destined for greatness will touch many people along their journey to the top. In my short years on this Earth I have made it my mission from the start to leave a lasting impact on everyone I come in contact with and as a student of Howard University I will continue my mission without fault. From birth my parents noticed I had an insatiable thirst for knowledge, a heart of gold and an unconquerable ability to lead. In the 5th grade I was awarded the

As I was reading Maya Angelou’s biography, I have found a personal connection to her. Maya’s parents were separated when she was young and she went to live with her grandparents. I lived with my mother up until I reached the age of starting school, when my mother realized she could not support me on her own. She left me with my grandparents and went to live on her own, to find a sustainable job. As the years went on, she met somebody and started a family of her own. Maya Angelou showed individualism through her experience as well as I have. I learned to be independent and went on my own to learn countless things you would need a mother for.
African Americans in my generation should be ashamed. What did our ancestors fight for? In this generation we use the word nigger as if it is slang and not a word that our ancestors looked down upon. What did Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders fight for? In Maya Angelou’s book Rainbow in the Clouds she discussed that we as African Americans should respect our descendants and behave in a way that they would be proud of. Maya Angelou also expressed how she is proud to be an American and how she is thankful to our troops.

In my reflections as I prepared to write this paper, I came to the realization that leadership is much more complex especially since the paper requires that I focus on a few traits. In an effort to make it simple, I wrote down the traits that came to mind and in process had over 10 important traits but an even bigger challenge was on how to narrow them down to 3 or 4 and this is the place that required a good deal of reflection. Eventually, however, I had to prioritize them since in any case; it is not possible to get a leader that has all the traits. As I thought of the various leaders who have inspired me, I noticed that while they strived to provide the best leadership by focusing on their strong points, they still had their weaknesses. To me this provided a justification for at least identifying key desirable traits and thereafter working to improve them. I did manage to settle on four traits, which for me are indispensible if a leader or a leadership is to become effective.
