Chapter One “Hey stop licking me!” A girl with crazy bronze hair says to the wolves that are on top of her. “You guys are so crazy! What am I going to do?” She pushes the wolves off and stands up. “I wonder what the stars are doing tonight?” Maybella finds ‘her’ tree and climbs to the top. “Why do the stars twinkle?” “Because the stars are dying,” says the voice inside Maybella’s head. “Everything dies my sweet Maybella.” “Then where is Dad?” “My sweet Maybella, you know that he is not dead. I HATE THIS FOREST MOM! IT’S SO BORING! I WANT TO LEARN NEW THINGS! BE A NORMAL PERSON!” Maybella yells and jumps down from her tree. She heads into the cave with the rest of the wolves for some sleep. The next morning, Maybella gets up to go take a swim in the nearby river. She puts on her swimming gear and runs to the river. Her best friend, Phoebe, decides to come with her too. When Maybella gets to the river, she dips her toe to see if the water is cold. The next thing she knows she is flung into the water! Soon, they both get hungry. “Hey, do you want that Robin now? I am kind of hungry.” Phoebe says. “Sure. I am hungry too.” Maybella replies. Maybella and Phoebe start to head back to the pack. The rest of the wolves are having a daily morning meeting. “So, who is going to get the fish?” says the female leader. “How about Markus, you do it?” “Why me!? I hate going into the river!” a stout wolf next to her says. “Azalea, you are so mean! You can’t force me to do it either.” “I can only act as the leader. We know he is still out there… Markus go and get the fish!” “Ugh! Fine! I hate older sisters.” Markus storms away from the pack meeting and rams a tree on the way out. Shortly after, Maybella and Phoebe arrive, surprised, and quickly joins the meeting. “I can’t believe that the squirrel population is plummeting! How are we going to survive?” A small wolf asks. “How is that possible? We can’t feed on bigger animals or we risk getting caught by humans.” One of the elders pointed out. “I think we have to start feeding on bigger animals. It’s about time we start.
