Finding Copper: A Narrative Fiction

Decent Essays

A whole week passed and we still weren’t any closer to finding Copper. The only lead we had was the video that Copper took on the day he was captured, but it only allowed for us to hear the captor’s voice. We were unable to see his face and even if we could, we wouldn’t be able to identify him because of his mask. I was growing more and more impatient with the whole situation. I found myself blaming Shay because he wasn’t there to help and even blaming Copper for getting himself kidnapped in the first place, but I knew that it wasn’t really either of their faults. It was Friday morning and I was making breakfast. “Aubrey! Let’s go! You made us late for class yesterday!” Bender yelled through the front door while he banged obnoxiously on it. …show more content…

I smiled, but didn’t say anything. “Are you okay? You seem quiet.” Bender mumbled as he watched me carefully after I didn’t say anything for another minute. I sighed and leaned against the counter in a huff. “We still don’t have any more leads on Copper.” I grumbled. “Hey, we are going to find him. Shay will be back soon and he will be able to find him, I promise.” Bender smiled at me, but it looked so forced that it almost made me feel worst. “Shay has been gone for two weeks.” I stated simply. “Which means that he will be home soon,” Bender mumbled. I had gotten into a nightly routine of showering, brushing my teeth, climbing into bed, and then calling Shay just to be sent straight to his voicemail. He wouldn’t respond to any of my text messages and I was starting to worry that the trial hadn’t gone as planned or that they found out that he changed …show more content…

You kids can’t be going in there today! We are about to be hunting on that land.” A younger man called at us. Bender turned and watched them all for a second before answering. “What on earth are you going to be hunting in these woods? It’s not deer season yet.” The men all erupted into laughter. “We aren’t hunting no deer tonight, boy. We are going to keep the town safe tonight by decreasing the wolf population.” My breath was caught in my chest for a second as it set in. Darcy had mentioned something about wolves being sighted next to this trail, but I didn’t think anything of it. “Wolves? There haven’t been wolves in these woods for decades, not since you folks chased them away.” Bender narrowed his eyes, crossed his arms, and glared at the men. “Look, we did what we had to in order to keep our town safe back then and we are doing the same now. The population of the wolves must be increasing or their food source is depleting because they are getting closer and closer to our houses. We can’t have them snatching up any of our kids now can we?” The man challenged and I could see Bender shake his head. “Alright, well, you folks have a good day, but if you don’t mind, we are going hiking.” Bender nodded and just continued to walk as the man shouted that it wasn’t their fault if they shot
