A whole week passed and we still weren’t any closer to finding Copper. The only lead we had was the video that Copper took on the day he was captured, but it only allowed for us to hear the captor’s voice. We were unable to see his face and even if we could, we wouldn’t be able to identify him because of his mask. I was growing more and more impatient with the whole situation. I found myself blaming Shay because he wasn’t there to help and even blaming Copper for getting himself kidnapped in the first place, but I knew that it wasn’t really either of their faults. It was Friday morning and I was making breakfast. “Aubrey! Let’s go! You made us late for class yesterday!” Bender yelled through the front door while he banged obnoxiously on it. …show more content…
I smiled, but didn’t say anything. “Are you okay? You seem quiet.” Bender mumbled as he watched me carefully after I didn’t say anything for another minute. I sighed and leaned against the counter in a huff. “We still don’t have any more leads on Copper.” I grumbled. “Hey, we are going to find him. Shay will be back soon and he will be able to find him, I promise.” Bender smiled at me, but it looked so forced that it almost made me feel worst. “Shay has been gone for two weeks.” I stated simply. “Which means that he will be home soon,” Bender mumbled. I sighed and scooped my backpack off the counter. I walked past him without saying anything and left the front door open behind me for him to follow. He came out, slid into the driver’s seat, and started driving to school before saying anything more. “Have you been able to get in contact with him?” Bender asked, but I just shook my head. I had gotten into a nightly routine of showering, brushing my teeth, climbing into bed, and then calling Shay just to be sent straight to his voicemail. He wouldn’t respond to any of my text messages and I was starting to worry that the trial hadn’t gone as planned or that they found out that he changed …show more content…
You kids can’t be going in there today! We are about to be hunting on that land.” A younger man called at us. Bender turned and watched them all for a second before answering. “What on earth are you going to be hunting in these woods? It’s not deer season yet.” The men all erupted into laughter. “We aren’t hunting no deer tonight, boy. We are going to keep the town safe tonight by decreasing the wolf population.” My breath was caught in my chest for a second as it set in. Darcy had mentioned something about wolves being sighted next to this trail, but I didn’t think anything of it. “Wolves? There haven’t been wolves in these woods for decades, not since you folks chased them away.” Bender narrowed his eyes, crossed his arms, and glared at the men. “Look, we did what we had to in order to keep our town safe back then and we are doing the same now. The population of the wolves must be increasing or their food source is depleting because they are getting closer and closer to our houses. We can’t have them snatching up any of our kids now can we?” The man challenged and I could see Bender shake his head. “Alright, well, you folks have a good day, but if you don’t mind, we are going hiking.” Bender nodded and just continued to walk as the man shouted that it wasn’t their fault if they shot
“No Sir, I’m sure it's them wolfs again” he said worried, while the chief looked at me with hate.
"A bunch of them were eaten. This is what you get for going outside the walls."
Another voice cut in. “Must’ve been those tree huggers we ransacked a couple nights ago.”
“I thought you were one of them,” he admits, squirming under Walker's punishing hold. “I told them last time I saw them that if I did see them again, then I’d kill them.”
"This is not the time to sleep!" screamed Ulrich. "There are wolves running towards us, you can sleep when we escape!"
“Yes of course, just like an ole night, I know that we need to protect the farm, the animals, and ourselves from being robbed,” Brad replied in his usual sarcastic tone.
I stared at him as he looked back at me. I think he was trying to gauge my reaction before continuing. “It turns out the space
“What would you say if I asked to go away, just like we did after we met the hunters?” I brought up.
“I was only going to ask if you’re wanted to go for one last trip,” Hunter said looking at him, “I can only promise it won’t be boring and the chances are things may try to kill us.”
The two wondered of the outcome of their two parties, as they neared closer the position of the gunshot. Both men had lost their weapons when the tree had fallen on top of them. They were both defenseless in a part of the woods that was hardly ventured into.
“They must be looking for that man. Let's guide them to him and let the hounds kill him.”
"Class!" Mr. Chadwick raised his voice. "Mr. Latrell that is absurd, who would want to be a wolf?" Kaden looked over at me as he bit his lip to control his
“Who dare step on our land?” They screeched, echoing throughout the forest, sending my men into a state of fear.
“A w-wolf!” I screech “Don't tell me you're the one taking!” I step back away from the wolf a bit.
“Yes, they seem to be coming from this direction.” Answered the huntsman, “I actually saw a wolf run in a hurry a couple minutes ago, wonder if that has to do with anything?
