The northern part of the United States and the southern part of the United States separated because they disagreed on each other’s opinion regarding slavery. The Union was against slavery and the Confederacy was supporting slavery for their benefits. The first battle of the Civil War began when the Confederates bombarded Fort Sumter, South Carolina. The Union had surrendered Fort Sumter after 34 hours of intense fighting. Lincoln then decided that the army should move against the Confederacy near Bull Run. The Confederacy once again destroyed the Union. Lincoln wanted to switch out McClellan with General John Pope who had won several wars in the West before. Unfortunately Pope was more boastful than resourceful, and General Lee quickly defeated the Union in the second Battle of Bull Run. After that defeat, Lincoln quickly reinstated McClellan as commander of the Union

The battle of Antietam took place on September 17, 1862. This battle was fought at Antietam Creek that was close to the village of Sharpsburg, Maryland. The South was led by a general named Robert E. Lee. He was one of the greatest general on the Confederate side.

Stonewall Jackson, a general for the Confederate Army died in 1863 due to complications from a gunshot wound (“Thomas”). Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson was a general for the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Jackson was most commonly known for his strategy and his men who were very skilled. Despite all of this Jackson was a brilliant tactician and a master at commanding his troops, which is why he is regarded as one of the best generals of the Civil War.

As the bloodiest single-day in American history, the battle of Antietam shifted Union confidence sufficiently enough to serve as an early turning point in the Civil War while simultaneously discouraging international support towards the Confederacy. On September 17, 1862, Major General George B. McClellan’s Army of the Potomac met General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia at Antietam Creek in what would become one of the most significant early battles of the Civil War.

McClellan’s caution in waging war is evidenced clearly in the Army of the Potomac’s Peninsula Campaign. McClellan was charged with leading the assault on Richmond, delivering what could have been a fatal blow against the Confederacy. During the Army of the Potomac’s movements towards Richmond, McClellan repeatedly delayed, believing he had inferior numbers to his initial adversary, Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston. Johnston knew the caution McClellan was prone to, and slowly drew McClellan closer to Confederate forces defending Richmond. At the Battle of Seven Pines, Johnston reinforced the idea in McClellan’s mind that caution was necessary. (McPherson, 1988, p. 461) The surprise attach by Johnston’s forces, though ultimately defeated by the Army of the Potomac, delayed McClellan’s advance as he called for more reinforcements from Washington. Johnston was wounded in the battle, and replaced by General Robert E. Lee. Lee, whose prowess as a tactician bordered on legendary, led a series of surprise attacks against McClellan’s Army of the Potomac in the Seven Days’ Battle. McClellan’s forces were pushed back, and he was relieved of duty as commander of the Army of the Potomac, until later in 1862. (McPherson, 1988, pp. 462-470)

George B. McClellan is famous in history because of his involvement with the civil war. He was a powerful general who was hired, and fired by Abraham Lincoln. George was born on December 3rd in 1826, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was born the son of a prominent surgeon, and a caring mother. He was also the grandson of the Revolutionary War General, Samuel McClellan. He married the daughter of a powerful Pennsylvania family. They had 5 children, two girls and three boys.

The Battle of Antietam took place on 17 September 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland. The battle was fought between General Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia and General McClellan’s Army of the Potomac. Although the battle lasted only 12 hours, it was a significant point of the American Civil War, as well as the deadliest day in history. Tactically the battle was considered a draw, but the North claimed strategic victory and President Lincoln published the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing hundreds of thousands of slaves.

After the loss at Manassas, Lincoln looked for another leader to replace McDowell, and some consideration settled on General McClellan. McClellan was at his best when he was organizing armies, not leading them into battle. Lincoln wanted the army to take over eastern Tennessee for political reasons, and McClellan for fairly sound military reasons wanted the same thing. The task was given to General Buell; it did not matter to McClellan that the area was impossible to take from the north, not to mention holding it.

At first the result of the battle was controversial, as it could not be determined who won the battle and which army made the most progress towards achieving their strategic goals. The passage of time revealed that, tactically, Antietam was a draw, but that the South lost from a strategic perspective. It was one of the major turning points in the American Civil War. This was due to President Abraham Lincoln using the Union “victory” as political impetus to issue his Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862. As a direct result of the Battle of Antietam, the Civil War became more about abolition than the reunification of the states, and made a peaceful reconciliation between the two combatants almost impossible. The ultimate defeat of the Confederacy occurred at the Battle of Antietam, although no one knew it at the time.

One example of his cowardice is when he had the chance to take out the rebels for good but instead he complained about his shortage of supplies and his footsore horses. This proves that Mclellan lacks courage and does not have what it takes to become president. On the other hand Lincoln will do anything to defend and protect his country. Deemed the single most deadly day in American military history, the Union (who had more men) swept many attacks towards the Confederate army. Even though the South had more spirit and useful tactics the sheer numbers of the Union made this battle one to remember. They fought for many hours in Miller's cornfield to then make a last stand at Antietam Creek. With the only sign of cover being trees and the stone bridge which was worn by bullets and bodies you could tell this fight was going to be bad.
