Do you like to build things and put things together? Then a career engineering should be what you are considering. College freshman at GCU deciding between a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology should choose a Mechanical Engineering degree because of the salary, job availability, and the diversity of job that can be obtained will lead to a higher quality of life further down the line.

Majoring in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology can lead to career with varying salaries, but majoring in Mechanical Engineering is more likely to result in a higher income. According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics (2017a), Mechanical Engineering have 288,880 jobs with a job growth of 9% in the next 10 years. Although, according to the Bureau of Labor (2017b), Mechanical Engineering Technicians have 46,100 jobs and a job growth of 5% in the next 10 years. Mechanical Engineers will not just have more jobs to choose from, but within the next 10 years they will extend that number with even more job development. According to GCU a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering can land jobs in" ...a variety of other engineering fields such as industrial engineering, systems engineering, manufacturing engineering, design engineering, project engineering and engineering sales" (GCU, 2017a). As opposed to a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology can only get jobs in "As a mechanical engineering technologist, you may choose to work independently as a liaison between manufacturing and engineering teams, or as the design and testing partner to an engineer" (GCU, 2017b). Mechanical Engineers have a more basic degree that applies to many different fields of engineering allowing them to get into many different types of jobs. While on the other hand, Mechanical Technicians have a much more specific degree in which their focus is on designing and testing products. On the contrary, Mechanical Engineers will have to no just design and test product, but they will also have to focus on the marketing and manufacturing of the produce that they have
