Although, according to the Bureau of Labor (2017b), Mechanical Engineering Technicians have 46,100 jobs and a job growth of 5% in the next 10 years. Mechanical Engineers will not just have more jobs to choose from, but within the next 10 years they will extend that number with even more job development. According to GCU a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering can land jobs in" ...a variety of other engineering fields such as industrial engineering, systems engineering, manufacturing engineering, design engineering, project engineering and engineering sales" (GCU, 2017a). As opposed to a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology can only get jobs in "As a mechanical engineering technologist, you may choose to work independently as a liaison between manufacturing and engineering teams, or as the design and testing partner to an engineer" (GCU, 2017b). Mechanical Engineers have a more basic degree that applies to many different fields of engineering allowing them to get into many different types of jobs. While on the other hand, Mechanical Technicians have a much more specific degree in which their focus is on designing and testing products. Being able to take in the information that is presented and being able to apply it is a crucial tool that is needed in order to be successful. One of the assignments that we were given in ENGR 1000 was that we were tasked to see what type of learner we were. Everyone has their own unique way of learning and I myself feel that I am more of a visual learner than verbal. There are eight different characteristics on a scale from one to ten which means there can be fifty thousand and four hundred different possibilities. This is why it is important to know and understand what type of learner you are because you are only one of that fifty thousand and four hundred. You could and are very likely spinning your wheels trying to learn things the wrong way if you truly don’t understand how you learn. I can read a book cover to cover and at the end, sometimes I could not tell you what I have just read. After taking that survey I was surprised at how much I was heavily leaning only on visual and not verbal. Mechanical engineering is not too different from electrical engineering in the sense that they both have to do with creating tools and many other things; however mechanical engineering has more to do with building things like cars and elevators than phones, or light bulbs. Being able to find a job after graduating from college is always something that should be worried about; however, the employment rate for mechanical engineers are increasing and is expected to increase by 5% in the next few years (summary). The median annual play for a mechanical engineer in 2016 was $84,190. A person only needs a bachelor's degree to start their work as a mechanical engineer (Summary). For mechanical engineering I would need classes like mathematics, physics, life, design and engineering (Summary). These things are also very convenient for me since I enjoy math and physic, but like I stated earlier everything has its own pros and cons.
As of right now I have high expectations for engineering. I feel that engineering will be a great field for me and I will have a great career. But I feel that at times is going to be very hard and challenging but I believe that in the end it will all be worth it. Really when it comes down to your duties for engineering it really just depends on what type of engineer you are and how high up you are in your company.
