Every day we rely on the news to keep us abreast of the state of affairs in our lives. From the tiniest of towns to the largest sprawling metropolis we need our news to be accurate, objective and we need it fast. As times change not only does the way in which we get our news change but in how it is presented to us. Biases in our media have always existed but the public’s distrust of the media because of these biases is quite high. Recent polls show that nearly 80 percent of Americans believe that the media influenced by influenced by the powerful and that they tend to favor one side of issues over another (Keiner, 2013, p. 401). A Pew Research Center poll conducted in 2011 found that 77 percent of respondents believed news organizations tend to favor one side over the other (Keiner, 2013, p. 405).

Most of us watch television or listen to the radio on our commute in order to be up to date with the surrounding events. We depend on those sources of mass media to relay relevant and reliable information in order for us to understand pressing issues and formulate our opinions pertaining to the best approach in dealing with those issues. But what if the information relayed to us is biased and skewed or worse yet if those sources of information divert attention away from pressing matters and place the individuals in an oblivious state.

While analysing media ownership, it resulted clear how proprietorial influence plays an important role in citizens’ lives. Today’s news is overall influenced by five major companies; therefore, the questions arises spontaneously: can we trust what we read?

Over-all this documentary made me feel very defeated and overwhelmed. Possibly it is just my mood tonight, but it is clear that a few really wealthy companies run the media in the United States.

While the definition is correct at the same time it fails to recognize another form, which is social media sites on the Internet. An unprecedented amount of technology uses as tools of influence to convince citizens to purchase and consume on a regular basis with a usual pitch that if one does not than life suddenly becomes accustomed. The techniques that are used to draw consumers in are both blatant and subliminal in the messages that are being sent for a variety of reasons. Media is a part of everyday life for us humans now and now this shall be examined using myself with news, consumer products, and social media sites.
