According to Google, the definition of media is, “the main means of mass communication (especially television, radio, newspapers, and the Internet) regarded collectively.” While the media can connect us, it has many negative effects and influences on today’s society.
The media is constantly ringing in our ears and communicating lies that don’t leave our minds. They tell us what is in and what is our, they tell us to focus on the materialistic things, they tell us that if we don’t know what’s in and what’s out then we aren’t cool. Then we don’t fit the standards that they set for us to achieve, we don’t fit the mold they want us to fit. The media tells us that the amount of likes we receive determines our worth. Body image is negatively affected through the media and can lead to insecurities and even eating disorders.
The media, such as T.V, the internet, even video games emphasize the importance of being attractive. While models in magazines are typically shown wearing a size 00-2 in pant size, the average pant size among women in America is a 12-14. On top of that, the models are typically photoshopped: airbrushed, slimmed -even though they are skinny as it is- teeth whitened, all to fit our society's mentality of “perfection”. This false advertising causes women to believe the “thin ideal” mentality, where slim is the only beautiful body type and to achieve that is to achieve beauty-which then can lead to eating disorders-such as bulimia or anorexia- among women to strive for this “perfection”.
