The book Soul of a Citizen by Paul Loeb makes a compelling case for civic engagement. The book emphasizes the need for people to get involved in civic life and it gives examples of people who made a huge impact just by deciding to do. These people saw something that was not right and they went out of their way to help. However, it was not size but they made up their mind that this was what they were going to do and went about doing it. They did not know that by doing that they were going to make a huge impact but they ended up making a huge impact and creating change. Just as these people did, I believe that everyone can engage in civic change and make a different. In this paper, I am going to discuss ways an average citizen can engage in civic life, ways that social worker can encourage others to get involved in civic life and why is it important for social workers to serve in this role.

Volunteering has taught me that there are many ways to contribute to the community and as small or large those contributions may be, they all make a difference. Volunteering also allows you to meet new people who share common interests as you and it unites people from diverse backgrounds to work together to give back to the community. Writing book reviews and contributing something so small, can have a great influence. Because I value reading and enjoy it as both a hobby that also has educational benefits, I take pride in knowing I am urging other young people to read and gain as much from it as I have. Taking part in the adopt a shelf program has taught me valuable organizational skills and also assists the library staff in keeping the library an organized and productive environment. By joining the interact club, I have gained a new sense of awareness, respect, and empathy for others in the community. Prior to joining interact, I was not aware of how many people around us are in need, and just how it easy it is to make a difference. By donating a bag of clothing or nonperishable foods to fundraisers, each individual can have significant impact on the lives of others in the community. My personal experiences and involvement in both interact and volunteering have shown me that it is crucial for everyone to give back to the community in order to make a difference, and has urged me to get involved and find more ways in which I can contribute to

My community has always been an important part of my life. I have actively served in my community through 4-H, and National Honor Society (NHS). I joined 4-H when I was 6 years old and since then I have served in many different ways. My 4-H club has local flower planters in town, and every week we take turns watering them. I have helped clean the road ditches in the surrounding areas to help out the environment. I have also delivered May Day baskets, Valentines, and gone Christmas caroling for the elders that live in the manner in my community. As one of the older members of my 4-H club, I think it is important to show the younger children that you should respect and help the elderly of your community. Baby boomers are people born between 1946 and 1964. The baby boomer generation will turn 65 by the year 2030. One-fourth of the entire population, will be seniors. With so many medical advances, many Americans are living longer, 5.8 million of seniors are expected to be older than 85. With so many baby boomers living longer, and the United States facing a growing rate of chronic diseases, we could be facing a health care crisis.

This generation is the healthiest and longest generation living in U.S. history in U.S. history. Due to the, vast population growth this has transformed and shocked the U.S. economy, because Baby Boomers are living longer and saving less. The populous generation spending creates a demand in the economy and lowers interest rates.

This generation also helped to establish family values and their model of living has been cast against other cultures around the world in this researchers opinion. Moving forward to the next generation which is referred to as the Baby Boomers, this is the generation that was born between 1943 and 1960 as noted by Zemke et al.(2013). This generation has been characterized as the first generation that came about when child rearing was a hobby and pleasure as opposed to an economic necessity. I am sure this was intended to be a positive but it warrants further investigating.

American civic participation has changed in the 20th century. The first way civic participation has changed is social liberation. Since the 1960s or so, exclusions on the basis of race and gender have been breached. Research demonstrates that volunteering is associated with active lifestyles and health benefits, particularly for older Americans. Volunteers not only help their community but also experience better health in their later years, enjoying greater levels of well-being, lower rates of depression and increased strength and energy. This finding is especially significant given current demographic trends. As our aging population increases – with almost one in every five Americans projected to be age 60 or older by 2030 – there is a great opportunity to engage older Americans in volunteering as a way to meet critical community needs while contributing to longer, healthier lives.

Kyles (2005) defines them as competitive, political, hardworking, and nonconformists. “Known for their workaholic ethic, Boomers will do whatever it takes to get the job done and get ahead, and they expect to be rewarded. They outnumber all generations and hold a majority of management-level positions. They are also approaching retirement and are heavily concerned with financial and job security” (Kyles, 2005, p. 54). This group is very hard working and also offers a lot of wisdom that can be beneficial to those of the younger generations.

People give back to the community through many ways such as volunteering time and donating money. Some may feel a sense of duty to give back to society either in a direct or indirect way. Having more free time can also provide people with the opportunity to volunteer and stay socially connected to others. Volunteering can create an avenue to maintain life satisfaction and psychological well-being (Morrow-Howell, 2010). Research has been completed that indicates helping others has a positive effect on the benefactor (Piliavin, 2003). Through scientific research previously conducted, this essay will argue that volunteering has a positive effect on the psychological well-being of seniors.
