The week was lead by Nakiya Findley and Beth Sculley, who both are part of Residence Life. Sculley noted, “The goal of Mental Health Awareness Week is to raise awareness about mental health, particularly in terms of how they affect college-aged students.”
Mental Health Awareness Week opened up on Monday with “Fresh Check Day,” which was a miniature fair with pet therapy and food, while at the same time educating students about the signs of suicide ideation, which include serious suicidal thoughts and providing avenues and resources for students in need of help.
There was a vigil that took place on Tuesday, where all people who committed suicide were remembered, and specifically the 1,100 college students who commit suicide each year. Sculley explained, “The prayer vigil is a very powerful way to pray for and remember those affected by mental health issues.”

Dr. Dillon encouraged anyone who is affected by mental illness in any way to visit NAMI.org or more specifically NAMIrhodeisland.org, which is the National Alliance on Mental Health and offers a great deal of helpful information on mental health.
Additionally, the Personal Counseling Center on campus is a good resource for students in need of help. Dr. Dillon mentioned that she, along with NAMI Rhode Island, hope to start a support group on campus. Any students interested in becoming a part of this group event should contact her.
Thursday and Friday concluded Mental Health Awareness Week with a coffee house and art therapy, respectively. The coffee house, which took place in McPhail’s, started with a viewing of slam poetry on mental health, followed by various performances by students and anyone who wished to share poetry, songs, or stories. The art therapy event offered students the opportunity to find peace in drawing and
It is no surprise that the way mental health is treated in comparison to physical health is not to the same degree. Not until recently has our society even recognized the significance and importance of mental health and illnesses. Omni Safety Solutions is a first aid and safety company that recognizes that there is a stigma associated with mental health. The company's main objectives are to spread awareness of how to help not only yourself but others with mental health. (Irvine, www.omnisafetysolutions.ca) I found this sign located in my hometown at the Burlington movie theatre. I choose this sign because I am interested in how people are discussing and becoming aware of mental health in today’s society. Furthermore, how this sign in our society
The social construction of mental illness limit an individual’s life opportunities as they are labelled “psychotic stalkers, comic figures, neurotics who do everything to excess, or sometimes as sympathetic characters” (DeVoe 2003-2004, p. 926) rarely are they viewed as competent members of society as illustrated by Howard Geld experience, “many years ago, I was diagnosed manic depressive psychotic and ever since then I have tried to live up to it.” (Howard Geld cited in DeVoe 2003-2004, p. 925). However events such as NSW Mental Health Month (October) which emphasises the promotion of social and emotional wellbeing by encouraging people to maximise their health and increase their mental health literacy provides a great opportunity for reducing the fear associated with this group by raising awareness of mental illness which over time serves also to eliminate the stigma associated with
On April 19th, 2016, two presenters who represent NAMI came to CUNY York College to give a speech about the NAMI organization and insights with living with mental illnesses. NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is an organization that is dedicated to improve the lives of people with mental illness. NAMI is also the nation’s voice of mental illness. It provides research, support, and education about serious mental illness. Mother, Arlene Day and daughter, lady Sharmane Day are the presenters and they represents NAMI New York City Metro which offers family to family, peer to peer, support groups, and help lines for people who wants to know more about mental illness. The program has five segments, which are Dark days, Acceptance, Treatment,
When it comes to the Mental health awareness month for May, it is not highlighted at Diversion that I could see from my interaction with staff. I did talk with some of the team members about Mental Health awareness and what that looks like in the community, they told me that there are multiple resources in the city that they can talk to the clients about if they need to be assisted as it relates to Mental health. One thing I noticed about the process of Mental health mindfulness is substantial resources in the public for them to use, Diversion provides a lot of brochures about center's in Green Bay that clients from Diversion can go that is specified for individuals with diverse kinds of mental health problems. Some of the places include the
I became interested in mental health after seeing people close to me be affected by it. I learned about some of the conditions from friends, family and online resources. My friends and family have shared their experiences and how it has affected their lives. Approximately 40 million Americans have a mental health condition (Mental Health America 2018). The topic I selected is emotional health. Typically we only worry about physical health, but overall wellbeing means good physical and emotional health.
I am Lily Moulin a sophomore at New Albany High School I'm writing this letter to inform you about spreading awareness of mental health. In my English class we Read a book called challenger deep that was about a teenagert named caden who struglled with a mental illness. This was one of my favorite books because it was the most relatable book this year. Mental illness is something everyone knows about but not many people understand it. I thinks something that could be improved about new albany and keeping it healthy is raising awareness about mental health, how to recognize it, deal with it, and how to get better. Many kids just like caden in the book I read deal with mental illness but struggle to realize it or to even get help. Also many people
With this goal in mind, I think UConn is doing a good job helping its students get the help that they need. Having the CSD on campus, a walking distance for all students, is an easily accessible resource solely dedicated to helping students who are struggling. By providing therapy, it gives students at least one person that they know they can trust and just talk to about anything they are having difficulty with. They also offer drop in consultations and yoga classes as a way for people to just connect with one another.
A club that I am part of is the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) on campus at Keuka College, which is a national organization made up of local affiliates, state organizations and volunteers. A goal that NAMI at Keuka College has is to bring awareness to mental illness and to end the stigma surrounding mental illness. A specific task is to find creative ways to spread awareness of mental illness on Keuka College. An objective of NAMI is create a stigma free campus, over the next year.
This last September I lost my best friend after my mother was diagnosed with leukemia. My whole world tilted on its axis. My family and friends were my everything. Through these experiences though, I discovered myself growing that world. I have seen how difficult it can be to keep good mental health when horrible things happen. Because of this, I spend large amounts of time volunteering at the middle schools around town. I often discuss strategies for good mental health. Whether it’s about general awareness, drug abuse or the struggles of just being okay, I find the kids and I both benefit from the experience.
Mental health day is an annually celebrated holiday on October 10th in the United States, and in many other countries around the globe. Thousands of tweets and posts were posted in regard to it, arguing about the importance of working openly through emotions. Many messages were directed specifically at men, telling them it is okay to express said emotions, and to talk about them, as many are worried it will emasculate them. 50 years ago, the concept of open conversations about emotions for men would have been completely taboo. Times have changed from the 20th century to the 21st, and values have evolved allowing less strict social restrictions on males. This shift in values also applies to the Ancient times to the modern-era, where the
Since last November, I’ve become very open about my depression, the stigma surrounding mental illness, and my journey surrounding my mental health in an attempt to
Lack of mental health literacy has been a rising problem in society as the prevalence of psychiatric disorders have increased. Heath literacy has helped people with physical health problems to get treatment and support that they need. It is important for people with mental health problems to have this support as well. The article, “Mental Health Literacy” by A.F. Jorn is about the issues that many societies today face when it comes to people understanding mental health.
Department of Health (2014) has recently applied focus towards the promotion of mental health as a key initiative for healthcare to resist discrimination against individuals and groups with mental health issues and promote social inclusion.
In David Storey’s play Home, the story follows two men and their two female friends in their daily life in a mental institution (Theatre Alberta Library). These plays plus many others are taking the drama community by storm and advocating for mental illness awareness along the way.
Since 2006 they have held a conference for world mental health day, helping bring awareness and explain how to reduce the risk of mental illnesses and suicide. Every year since 2006, the charity has held some sort of conference or event for mental illness awareness, from talking about how mental health is changing alongside the world and how culture and diversity affects this, to how it should be part of primary care and should have enhanced treatment. Throughout every year there are three to four events. In 2011, the charity partnered with NLB-SRS, to set up a World Mental Health Day corner in 23 libraries. In 2014 they held a mental wellness carnival, which helped to bring in many people to hear talks about mental health and how families could work through their personal
