Every year it is estimated that 1.8 million batteries are not properly disposed of. When this happens, it poses a major threat to the ecosystem. Heavy metals used in batteries are toxic to humans and they can leach into our water system. Lead and nickel-cadmium (Nd-CD) can only enter the human body by inhalation or ingestion, but mercury can even be absorbed through the skin. Federal and state laws and regulations have been implemented and enforced to ensure heavy metal batteries are properly disposed of and recycled.

If lead accumulates in your body you could sustain death or lead poisoning. Lead poisoning occurs when lead builds up in the body often over a period of months or years. Even small amounts of lead can cause perpetual health problem. Children under the age of six are vulnerable to lead poisoning and possibility death.

The purpose of this assignment was to discuss how mercury pollution is dangerous for our aquatic ecosystems. I wanted to show that we should be more concerned about the effects of mercury and how it impacts the marine mammals as well as humans. Many people disregard mercury as being a serious pollutant which can cause severe illness and even in some cases, death to marine mammals. By knowing the effects of mercury pollution, we can make a difference by following measures to safely dispose of mercury product. By properly disposing mercury containing products, we will be tremendously helping to curb mercury pollution one small step at a time.
