METAPHYSICS! No, that is not a character from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It is the study of being and nature; the study of how things are. In unit three of Theology IV, we took a deeper look into what studying metaphysics looks like, and, let me tell you, our conversations made my head spin. We talked about how there are three levels of reality, how natural law and original sin affect our human nature, and to me, the part that intrigued me the most, existence and true reality. Whenever our class conversations went on tangents about existence, my mind would struggle to keep up. That means a thing must “be” in the physical, mathematical, or metaphysical level of reality. By this definition, if I am not mistaken, I exist because I am on the physical level of reality. This cancels out my suspicion of being a simulation, however, I could still be a “test subject,” a lab rat of some mad scientist alien who enjoys playing games with cause and effect. When I think about this, I conceptualize it as if I’m in the Hunger Games. In the Hunger Games novels and movies, the Gamemakers would manipulate the arena in order to provide entertainment for their viewers. What if another being is manipulating each person’s life in a trial and error process? Is the Earth a television show for another being to use for entertainment? I sometimes think that this is a possibility. How do we know that the weather is simply a force of nature? Couldn’t there be a possibility that it is simply a factor another being put into play to see how humans reacted? While studying metaphysics, we learned that there is only one primary cause and many secondary causes in the universe. Since something, in the beginning, caused everything else (or continues to cause everything else) isn’t it responsible for the many factors of the world and couldn’t it experiment with those factors as it pleases? In the movie film The Hunger Games, the nation of Panem is a society very dissimilar to our own. This nation once began with 13 districts, until the thirteenth district chose to take action against the oppressors. They were quickly put down, the remaining 12 districts were punished and were forced to fund two participants which were known as tributes , a boy and a girl of young age to the Capitol each year to compete in the Hunger Games which is a brutal fight to the death. The winner of the huger games is then rewarded with a number of rewards, as well as their home district receives an extra amount of food for one year. The government of Panem administrates these annual “games” as a reminder
Until page 50 it was a perfect beginning , and I had a good time in reading this pages and a lot of something to learn and something make me feel interest, such as, the deep description of the characters, places, and even food which made me feel the moment and as if I were living with them. Also, the way that the author had depicted how people suffered because of the hanger and poverty. Another thing that I want to notice about is that girl – Katniss – who was the ideal sister and daughter, when she prefers to go to The Hunger Games instead of her sister – Prim- ,and when she takes care of her ill mother. The Hunger Games novel written by Suzanne Collins reflects significant issues in the reality world nowadays which relate to the humanity, the poverty, the violence,… It describes the issues through the characters and what happens in the story, and the most significant issue occurs throughout the novel is the gap between rich and poor people. In the beginning of the novel, Suzanne Collins describes clearly the scene of the poverty, the terrible fear of the 12-district’s villagers, in contrast to the wealthy of the Capitol’s citizens. In a life where one must rebel to stand up for what is right. In a world where there is only one government. In a game to kill or be killed. Who truly has the power? In the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, power is shown in many parts of the book. Although the government is initially successful at controlling everyone’s lives in the Districts, as Katniss’ journey of survival progresses in the Hunger Games, her rebellious actions damage the Capitol’s power. This causes her to prove the Capitol that they do not own her, and she has self-power. Throughout the book, Suzanne Collins portrays that everyone has certain control. Collins uses the Districts, the rebellions, and the Capitol to get this message across to the readers.
Upon watching the movie “The Hunger Games” from a sociological perspective, I learned that many of the things that we have gone over in this online sociology course were incorporated heavily into what is perhaps one of my personal favorite movies of all time. Things like social status, culture, heritage, gender, and more were all used throughout the film in order to portray a realistic and believable setting for the viewer from a social perspective. Probably the most important sociological themes explored in this movie were the struggle to maintain a high ranking social status amongst surrounding humans, the pre-perceived idea of what you were and weren’t allowed to do legally speaking based on your district, and most importantly, how humans can ultimately make life or death decisions based on the value or benefit of a certain person to the group.
In The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins expresses two themes. The first one is that we can’t let the government use their power to treat, and use people like they want, they are oppressing them. “At one o’clock, we head of the square. Attendance is mandatory unless you are on deaths door. This evening, officials will come around and check to see if this is the case. Ideas of sociology play a big role in people’s everyday lives. Many Books and movies consists of the basic ideas of sociology. The film series, The Hunger Games is an example of such a representative movies. The base story of the series include a society, where people are given little to no rights. This story highly relates to the ideas of sociology since it is about a society, its culture and norms. Katniss Everdeen, is the female lead of the movie who rebels for her rights.
The Hunger Game film is an emotional series that resemble a severe caste system setting. The plot showcases a transformation of an unfortunate girl becoming a beacon of hope for the rebellion. By doing this, the movie revolves around three themes which are backed by theories and models in sociology which include opportunity, explained by the Status Theory, conflict, explained by Karl Max and Max Weber, and interaction, represented by the Dramaturgical Model.
Oftentimes when reading books set in the middle of societal unrest or deterioration, we find the characters struggling with difficult, and sometimes impossible, decisions. These types of decisions delve into an individual’s sense of humanity. At what point will their actions carry them over the line they thought they would never cross? How do you preserve your humanity when everyone else around you have compromised their own? In The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and The Road by Cormac McCarthy the theme of preserving your humanity amidst an inhumane society is carried throughout the narration. The argument can be made that when leaders begin crossing the line and losing the basic humanity of protecting life, society as a whole falls in line.

The author shows an elaborate and horrifying description of a society not so unlike our own and provides a clear warning about the danger of governmental control. The government of Panem has a government which controls everything. The government shows totalitarianism, a post-apocalyptic setting, and the world ranks. These three main points are what shows how the The Hunger Games is a great example of a dystopian literature.
