Childbirth is a beautiful thing. After the hours of labor, there is nothing more special than having the newly mother able to hold her child the minute after it’s born. It makes the pain that you had just experienced go away because all that matters in the world is that newborn child in your arms. During labor, every woman has her own experience but one common experience is the pain. According to Kitzinger (1978) “Labor pain can have negative or positive meaning, depending on whether the child is wanted, the interaction of the laboring woman with those attending her, her sense of ease or dis-ease in the environment provided for birth, her relationship with the father of her child and her attitude to her body throughout the reproductive …show more content…
The options for relieving these discomforts may be divided into six general types positive conditioning” (p.242). The Lamaze method is one of those six types of positive conditioning. Priscilla Ulin (1963) says “the unprepared mother who attempts labor without sedation and anesthesia is likely to experience frustration and severe pain. However, practitioners of the method developed by Ferdinand Lamaze have discovered that, with adequate preparation, the patient can control her reception of sensory stimuli to the extent that during labor she has little or no pain” (p. 60). I have heard of women using the Lamaze method and found it helpful to anticipate how they wanted the birth to feel. I find it interesting that the pain experienced in birth does not have to be unbearable. In 1977, Norr, Block, Charles, Meyering, and Meyers interviewed 249 women who had recently delivered and says “38% of our sample attended at least 5 Lamaze classes” (p.261). Most women are scared to give birth because they have heard numerous stories from other women just how painful it could be. Everyone in the world has a different pain tolerance and should be treated differently. I believe Lamaze is an excellent method of childbirth for those women who fear the pain from giving birth. It will condition
In this week’s response we are given the choice to choose to respond on the topic about a type of “non-traditional” childbirth (i.e. hospital) of our choice that we would want to know more about and “What we learn before we’re born” from TED talk by Annie Murphy Paul . This week I am choosing to respond to a type of “non-traditional” childbirth (i.e. hospital). The type of childbirth I chose to talk about is a water birth. As interesting as this topic may be and all of the possible childbirths there are this stood out for me because I believe that it is amazing that a child can be born in a little pool.
This article, Natural Childbirth doesn’t have to be a painful delivery written by Janelle green emphasizes that woman’s body is designed to birth babies and so, natural childbirth must be considered as a natural event. Natural childbirth (NCB) means laboring and delivering using no medication at all, rather depending on non-drug pain relief, such as hydrotherapy (using water in a shower or tub), massaging, breathing, visualization, meditation, position changes, and hypnosis. Moreover, non-drug pain relief methods are efficient due to these techniques interfere the sensory pathways to the brain that communicate pain, and also, this reducing catecholamines; so, can help the labor more calm and manageable. Experiencing labor pain doesn’t mean
I do not cope well with pain and from what I’ve heard the pain a woman feels while giving birth is indescribable. The benefits of having an epidural is that it provides continuous pain relief to the lower part of the body. The medication is given through a catheter – a very thin, flexible, hollow tube – that's inserted into the epidural space just outside the membrane that surrounds the spine. I would choose this method to help to ease any type of pain that I am experiencing. As far as I know its just medicine. For example when you have a headache you would take aspirin to help relieve the pain.
It is important to explain, why labor hurts. The primary source of pain during labor is the powerful contractions of the uterus that helps to expel the baby. The amount of pain a laboring women experience depends on the strength of contraction, the length of labor, the baby size, the baby position preferably facedown, and the use of Pitocin. Pitocin causes the contractions to become stronger. Since endorphins are associated with euphoria and analgesic. During natural childbirth Endorphin levels increased. They increases level increase the expectant mother pain tolerance. It is important to inform them of stage I three stages of labor: early labor, active, and transition. Transition is the most painful stage. Explain some non-pharmaceutical
Lamaze classes aim to boost a woman’s confidence in her ability to give birth naturally. The philosophy behind this type of childbirth is that women possess an inherent right to give birth free from routine medical interventions. However, Lamaze also educates women so that when medical interventions are required and/or pain relief medication is preferred, women are able to provide true & conscious consent. Some of the most common things covered in a Lamaze class are:
Not taking complications into account, most women that give birth in a hospital deliver vaginally. However, pain management is still a factor in hospital births. There are a few options for women to choose from such as injections, narcotics, tranquilizers, and nitrous oxide. Some of these pain solutions may not end up occurring by choice such as tranquilizers. Although tranquilizers are rarely used, they are successful in situations where the mother’s anxiety is too high. The most common use of pain management in a hospital birth is an epidural. This is an injection that is put in a specific spot on the lower back, also called the epidural space. Although there are always risks with medicine, epidurals are very low risk. A British journal of midwifery defends these statements. “Epidurals are often the final and arguably the most invasive option of the intrapartum analgesia spectrum, promising the possibility of eliminating all maternal discomfort. Although highly effective when working well, if not correctly sited, epidural anesthesia can leave women experiencing an uneven block with pain sensations being effectively removed down one side of the body” (Sanders & Lamb, 2014, p. 645) The risk of an epidural is definitely something for new parents to take into consideration however, it allows the mother to still be fully awake and deliver naturally and reduces pain from the waist down. A similar method to an epidural is a spinal block, however, a spinal block can be riskier and can potentially affect the health of the baby. Other injections that can be used are local anesthetic injections, which will numb the painful area but it does not completely take away the pain. Narcotics are also sometimes used and given to the mother through an IV (intravenous catheter), they
The Lamaze method. In these classes, parents learn that having a baby is normal, healthy, and natural. Mothers are taught to take a neutral position regarding pain medicine and numbing medicines, and to make an informed decision about using these medicines if the time comes.
There are substantial benefits to both mother and baby in the provision of epidural analgesia for labour including pain relief, during prolonged labour,
When a woman gets complications with her pregnancy the only thing that mother is thinking about is her unborn baby. I woman can take all the classes she wants and do all the hydrotherapy she needs. Hydrotherapy is a form of water birthing. The mother sits in a small pool and gives birth in the water. Mother say, that water birthing is relaxing and eases the contracting. In my opinion I feel that god and the baby knows how he or she will come out. I believe that a mother will do what works with the time come. I do feel that you cannot be a 100% ready when the time come to have you child. There can be some many things that can go wrong that can put you and your baby at risk. I do think that most of these classes are their just to make money. My first experience
The pain women experience during childbirth was investigated in a study at Bar-Ilan University conducted by Matisyohu Weisenberg and Zahava Caspi. Women were assessed in four measures; pain perception, behavioral ratings, extroversion and coping style. Researchers measured pain on a scale of one to one hundred. The subjects assessed their pain during three distinct points in the study; first at the point when the cervix dilates, again when the patient’s midwife instructs her to push, and at the point of birth. Researchers rated behavior through observation. Behavior was rated in the time period of twenty minutes beginning with entry to the delivery room. Researchers rated women between zero and four in sixteen categories. The categories were
As cited in the introduction, Lamaze class is now based on educating couples about the six healthy birth practices which was discussed by the instructor. These practices came to lime light due to unhealthy practices of most medical team. Child birth was gradually becoming a nightmare, couples were losing their grip on natural birth because everyone opted for an easy way out. The instructor spoke at learnt about the side effects of epidural, opioids and nitrogen oxide on fetus and mothers. She encouraged the couples to advocate for the natural process by practicing early, the methods to control pain. The instructor explained the six healthy practices in a very simple and clear manner. The six healthy birth practices include:
An example of the instances was when the women’s cervix was dilated to ten centimeters, another was when it was time to begin pushing and the last burst of pain when the infant made its way through the birth canal. Dr. Weisenberg and Zahava Caspi found in their results using the Mann-Whitney nonparametric test results showed that there was in fact a significant difference in pain perception in the different cultural groups (16). A Mann-Whitney test is when the distribution between the two different sets of skew is tested in order to compare two different unmatched groups distribution. The Middle-Eastern Group which totaled fifty-three rated the pain to be 45.10 as compared to the Western average of 36.15 from a total of thirty women. (Weisenberg and Caspi, 16). The results also indicated that the level of educational background yields a variance of pain perception, where women who had less of an educational rearing exhibited more pain. Mann-Whitney test were performed in the each group separately and it concluded that the pain perception of Western women did not really fluctuate due to difference in educational background (Weisenberg and Caspi, 16). However when the test was done on the Middle Eastern women there was a significant gap in relation to pain perception between the low and high educated women.
Patients have a choice to deliver their babies without any form of pain medication and having a natural delivery is a painful process. Many women view this process as the worst pain they have ever experienced in their lifetime (Sng et al., 2014). The laboring process starts out as mild to severe pain. When the level of pain becomes unbearable, patients often seek out ways to relieve their pain and often times, it is done through epidural analgesia. The controversial issue among pregnant women is knowing when the correct time to request an epidural. The aim of this review is to provide evidence base information on the safety of early initiation versus late initiation of epidural analgesia and its maternal and fetal outcome (Sng et al., 2014). The relevance of this topic is to see if epidural timing can cause an effect on the laboring process such as increasing the risk of caesarean
The Lamaze Method was developed in the early 1950’s by French obstetrician Fernand Lamaze and included the method of controlled breathing and viewed birth as normal (West 165). While the Lamaze method stated out at its inception as “patterned breathing techniques to evoke a trained relaxation response with contractions during labor” (psycho prophylaxis), the current Lamaze method “emphasizes empowering women to follow their instincts to do what they already know, give birth” (West
Giving birth is something that happens many times daily all over the world. Though many people who have not experienced giving birth, such as men, may think all the woman has to do is push a couple times and it's over, that is not the case. There are three stages to giving birth according to BabyCentre including contractions, pushing, and delivering the placenta.
