Since ancient times, humanity has used art to express feelings, emotions, ideas, and much more. Also, it was used as a medium to communicate between each other. As a result, it is not surprising that we feel delighted while observing works of art. Now, there are many opportunities to go to museums, and enjoy the precious art pieces shown there. One of the museums that has a wide variety of art, is the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The Metropolitan Museum is extraordinary because it displaying artwork from all over the world, and reveales 5000 years of history through its exhibitions. This period dates back to ancient Greece, a civilization that had an ample knowledge of architecture and art. This is an important period in ancient Greece because artists started to depict emotions into their artwork, a technique that is still used in modern day. One of the sculptures displayed in this exposition, is the statue of Hercules. This muscular figure is a perfect example of the improvement made by the Greeks to the human body in the Hellenistic period. The sculpture precisely defines the physical constitution of an athletic man. It clearly shows his well-defined torso, muscular arms and legs. Also, the hair, the beard, and the mustached are accurately realistic to a human being. The same happens with his eyes, nose, lips, and eyebrows. Everything looks very …show more content…
The left hand it is resting casually over the club which is covered with a lion skin, representing the first labor that Hercules had to accomplish. This particular statue is a free standing sculpture made of bronze, so it has a smooth but firm texture, and gives spectators the feeling of being in the presence of a god. Even though the sculpture looks opaque, when it was made, using a casting techniques, it shined and glowed to represent heroic person.
This research was done through The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s website, a very user friendly site to browse and learn about art. Since everything is well organized, and it has links that can help people find what they are looking for, it is an excellent source to do research papers. The only thing I will recommend to the museum is to make videos about the sculpture or rotatable pictures in order to observe them from all angles. Even though the experience of being in front of a piece of art is incomparable, the website provides a very realistic experience, and history lesson for anyone
This technique, used by Greek sculptors for the head and other parts of the statue began as early as the Archaic Period. ( The period in Greek history lasting from the eighth century BC to 480 BC, post Greek Dark Ages and succeeded by the Classical period.) The work has many signs of damage and decay, among these are missing body parts such as the capital and the right wing. The surface is worn down, although still shows clear creases and details throughout the texture of the piece. The head, wings, and the drapery were carved separately before the work as a whole was eventually assembled. The wings were attached with no external support and it's a marvel that one is still managing to adhere
Never before have I seen a museum as grand as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. From its architecture to its massive art collection, The Met has a little bit of everything and one is sure to find something that captures his or her interest. Considering that The Met is the United States' largest art museum, it is easy to get lost within its many corridors and wings. My visit to The Met took place during the last week of July. Despite the almost unbearable heat and humidity that hung in the air, visiting museums under these climate conditions is a welcome respite from a suffocating, yet bright summer afternoon.
One pleasant afternoon, my classmates and I decided to visit the Houston Museum of Fine Arts to begin on our museum assignment in world literature class. According to Houston Museum of Fine Art’s staff, MFAH considers as one of the largest museums in the nation and it contains many variety forms of art with more than several thousand years of unique history. Also, I have never been in a museum in a very long time especially as big as MFAH, and my experience about the museum was unique and pleasant. Although I have observed many great types and forms of art in the museum, there were few that interested me the most.
New York City, one of the greatest cities of the world, is remarkable because of its history, culture, and diversity. It is world renowned for its skyscrapers, Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, Broadway entertainment, Radio City Music Hall, Central Park, and even restaurants specializing in ethnic foods. However, the thing that most intrigues and excites me about New York City is the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Greek art, especially sculpture, was a common way to explore and reach past the confines of mankind’s natural appearance be it through penises, huge muscles, or generalized unrealistic body standards. Hercules and the Hydra, a sculpture by Mathias Gasteiger, presents an image of masculinity through the expressive posture and form of Hercules once you look past those gleaming bronze pectorals, and into the intricate details of the piece.
Overall, subjectivity is very important to this non-fiction article, it allows the reader to get a taste of what the museum may feel like, what emotions they may feel,
noted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, “The art of the ancient Near East exhibits a great
As I walked up to The Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) for the first time, I was overwhelmed with amount of visitors that occupied the steps to the entrance and wondered if this visit was the best choice. I opened the front doors to the museum and stepped inside; my immediate impression of the place reminded me of my first experience at Grand Central Station. Initially, I was overwhelmed and distracted by the hustle and loud noise around me, yet at the same time, I found myself mesmerized by the architectural beauty and layout of the place.
Focusing mainly on Hercules and choking the Nemean Lion, this very easily shows the myth of the Twelve Labors of Hercules. A brief summary of the myth is that in order to become immortal, he must complete twelve tasks, that could possibly kill him. His first task was to slay the Nemean Lion, an invulnerable lion that had been wreaking havoc among the place. In order to kill it, Hercules must strangle it with his own two hands, leading to the painting on the vase. Along with this depiction, the painting also shows Athena looking onward, most likely due to her consistent appearance in the myth, helping Hercules throughout his travels and endeavors. Iolaos, Hercules' nephew, is shown holding a wooden club, which is actually the weapon Hercules is most often depicted with, showing another connection to the story of Hercules. The Nemean Lion was just the first of Hercules' labors, the rest being as follows: the Lernaean Hydra, Cerynean Hind, Erymanthian Boar, Augean Stables, Stymphalian Birds, Cretan Bull, Mares of Diomedes, Girdle of Hippolyta, Cattle of Geryon, Apples of Hesperides, and finally Cerberus. Most of these labors were objects that the common people feared. With Hercules giving hope to the people, showing that these monsters that continuously ravaged areas, the people of Greece could more easily live their
In Ancient Greece, the culture and values have been developed over time through tales and artwork. A considerable amount of such works have been marble sculptures of various people and gods. Many of the most famous and valuable sculptures depict a common attribute in ancient poetry, youth or the importance of the body. A vast majority of characters in ancient stories have been that of a youthful and intensely patriotic hero. Strength in youth and form are quite common in the characteristics of these ancient heroes. People in the ancient world have been represented through the power and youth within their story and appearance and reflected upon in the sculptures of this time.
With exhibitions of the most thought-provoking art, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago is one of the Nation’s largest facilities devoted to the art of our time (“About the MCA”) . The mission of the MCA is to offer a direct experience to the public of modern day art and living artists. German architect Joseph Paul Kleihues designed the new building with seven times the square feet of its previous facility (“The Building”) . October of 1967 the museum opened its doors to the public for the first time. The Museum of Contemporary Art is a symbol of modern art, culture, and the artist of our time. It is a stepping stone in history and will leave footprints in the heart of Chicago for many generations to come.
The purpose of this paper is to visit The Metropolitan Museum of Art and write a reaction paper about art works at the museum based on my impressions about them. To begin, I will start by giving you a little of background information about this interesting museum.
It was found in the Baths of Caracalla. Hercules, in this statue, is bearded and has a thick mane of curly hair. He is fully nude and has powerful muscles which are extremely defined, even as he relaxes leaning on his club. The skin of the Nemean lion is draped on this club. According to the myths about Hercules, he killed the vicious, monstrous lion with that club during one of the twelve labors. These labors are iconic parts of Hercules’ image, as being powerful and capable. Another one of the labors is suggested by the apples of Hesperides which Hercules holds behind his back. In order to see them, the viewer must walk around to the back of the statue. This new way to view sculpture serves two purposes, the first of which is to show off the sculpture in the round and effort put into detail, the second is to add another element to the story which Hercules
Positioned alongside Central Park within the heart of New York City, The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the largest and most influential art museums in the world. The Met houses an extensive collection of curated works that spans throughout various time periods and different cultures. The context of museums, especially one as influential as the Met, inherently predisposes its visitors to a set of understandings that subtly influence how they interpret and ultimately construct meanings about each individual object within a museum. By analyzing two separate works on exhibit at the Met, I will pose the argument that museums offer a unique expression of a world view that is dictated through every element of its construction.
