With exhibitions of the most thought-provoking art, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago is one of the Nation’s largest facilities devoted to the art of our time (“About the MCA”) . The mission of the MCA is to offer a direct experience to the public of modern day art and living artists. German architect Joseph Paul Kleihues designed the new building with seven times the square feet of its previous facility (“The Building”) . October of 1967 the museum opened its doors to the public for the first time. The Museum of Contemporary Art is a symbol of modern art, culture, and the artist of our time. For the tours there is a free coat check, large bags, backpacks, brief cases, and umbrellas must be checked in. Only pencils can be used for writing. Smoking is not permitted anywhere in the building and only assistant guide dogs are permitted for animals.
Volunteer opportunities at the MCA are very broad. Assisting the museum staff with tours, opening and closing, as well as greeting the guests are some of the many administrative options. This is a great way to get involved in the Chicago community as well as a good reference for those interested in recommendations for art schools. Workshops are provided for young adults interested in digging further into the art trade. These workshops focus on learning about and exploring art and its culture. General admission for these Workshops, are eighteen dollars, and for students is twelve dollars.
The German architect who designed the building made its structure so large that in scale alone warrants attention. The previous building had been built as a bakery and for a time had served as the corporate offices of Playboy Enterprises, but in 1967 was rebuilt (“History of the MCA”). The McNay art museum is a fantastic and beautiful place. There has a historic story about this museum. Mrs.McNay, the founder of the McNay art museum, collected many of 19th and 20th century European and American painting. After she died, she left her collection of more than 700 works of art and established the first museum modern art in Texas in 1954. This museum collects many of historic paintings, photography, metal work and sculptures. My favorite section of that museum is featured exhibitions. When I walked in, I felt I was in the fashion show; there have many of awesome costumes. The purpose of Chicago Art fair was to rejoice in the remembrance Christopher Columbus discovery of America, at that time 400 years ago. From modern time, 12 and half decades ago, Chicago was epic center of art. Millions of people came from all over the world just to be in attendance. In the 1920’s Miss Lillie P. Bliss, Mrs. Cornelius J. Sullivan, and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller, Jr., created The Museum of Modern Art in 1929. Its founding director, Alfred H. Barr, Jr., wanted the Museum to be dedicated to helping people understand and enjoy the visual arts of our time, and that it might provide New York with “the greatest museum of modern art in the world.”MoMA also owns about two million film stills. The Lakeland art Museum is the focal point of my report, where I enjoyed many paintings, photographs, and sculptures of many artists both renowned and local. Examples of such would be Pablo Picasso, Francisco De Goya, Hung Liu, and many more. Although the first to catch my eye was that of Liu’s work Working Woman: Millstone 1999, an etching with soft colors, varnish, as well as paint. It depicts two work-worn older Chinese woman operating a millstone the image was then layered over with red kanji fruit and a bird. Furthermore while absorbing the impact of the piece I came to realize that one woman was much older than the other and overseeing the younger ones work, they were wearing similar clothes and seemed to be in an outdoor setting. Concluding that it maybe possible The image depicted a mother and daughter as well as their family practice of milling grain. Due to it obviously not being factory setting meaning the mill must be close to a home, similarities between the women could possibly mean relation, and practice of stone milling could have been passed down thorough their generations.

The building at 111 South Michigan Avenue, home of the Art Institute of Chicago, was opened in 1893 as the World’s Congress Auxiliary Building for the World’s Columbian Exposition. The building was passed on to the Art Institute after the end of the exposition. Designed in the Beax-Arts style by Boston firm Shepley, Rutan, and Coolidge, building has become an icon for chicagoans an tourists alike. In order to compose this assignment, I visited the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum (CAM). The USF Contemporary Art Museum is a compact museum on campus located near the Dance buildings and the Theatres. The museum opened its establishment in 1989 and has offered a wide range of art from around the world including the United States, Africa, Europe, and Latin America (usfcam.usf.edu). In order to keep students engaged in the art, the museum changes its exhibits a couple times a year. Currently, the exhibition on display is entitled Extracted and incorporates “the extraction and circulation of natural resources around the globe” (Megan Voeller). Despite the museum being not large in size, I was able to attain a sense of nature through photographs, sculptures, video messages, and banners produced from artists including Otobang Nkanga, Marina Zurkow, Claire Pentecost, Mary Mattingly and Daniel Shiffman. The social angle most strongly related to the exhibit on display at this time is nature and culture. Extracted was motivated by relationships between humans and the environment referring to “complex technical processes behind oil drilling and mining or industrial agriculture” (Megan Voeller). Most of the artists focus their work on nature including the environment, ecosystems, and life itself.
The exhibit that I viewed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art was one about European Art between the years 1100-1500. This was a series of paintings, sculptures, architecture, and tapestry of the Medieval and Early Renaissance as well as objects from the Middle East. This exhibit was an important part of the history of the Philadelphia Museum of Art because for the first time, Italian, Spanish, and Northern European paintings from the John G. Johnson collection were shown. It gave me a good idea of what the paintings were like in these four centuries and reflected ideas of both the east and the west.
During my visit at the Art Institute of Chicago this quarter, a popular and interesting piece of artwork that spoke to me in ways that no other artwork did was the, “Tarquin and Lucretia” by Tintoretto or the artist known as Jacopo Robusti. Tintoretto is also known as the one of the most well-known Italian Renaissance artists and became interested in painting at a very young age. This specific piece of artwork was originally created by Tintoretto during 1578 through 1580 and is an oil painting on a canvas. It has approximate size measurements of 68’ 7/8” by 59’ 5/8” and is classified as an Italian work of art. This painting takes place in ancient Roman times where the figure that is somewhat laying down represents Lucretia, who is the wife of an honest man named Lucius Tarquinius Collatinus (“Stories and Histories - The Rape of Lucretia”, 2016). The other figure that is directly behind Lucretia is Sextus Tarquinius or Tarquin, who is her rapist and the son of a dictatorial Roman king named Lucius Tarquinius Superbus. Subsequently after her rape, Lucretia tells her husband and father about the incident. In order to save herself from the guilt and misrepresentation of her reputation, she stabs herself to death (“Stories and Histories - The Rape of Lucretia”, 2016). In preparation for my first visit to the Denver Art Museum I browsed their numerous extravagant collections online. I was taken back by the wide range of skilled artwork as well as impressed. I spent hours completely entranced by the artwork. When I was done viewing the gallery virtually I questioned whether or not I should even still visit the actual museum. I felt that I had just had the same experience only free and from the comfort of my couch. Fortunately, my sister convinced me into going with her and I have not regretted it since! Viewing artwork in person is far more beneficial than viewing it from a virtual gallery.

Public art encapsulates a large part of Chicago’s history, and engages many different people in varying ways. Recently, I was in the city observing art and came across a woman who was seeing the same pieces I was. She proceeded to tell me she had just gotten off a plane, that morning, from New York, keep in mind it was around noon when I saw her, and wanted to show her daughter the great pieces of public art in Chicago. She passionately relayed the rich historical context of a few works of art: her main point being that Chicago is a hub for a booming culture of art. She noted that great artists from Europe, such as Picasso, Chagall, and Dubuffet, wanted to be a part of the modern art trends happening in Chicago in the twentieth century. She went as far to say that “these [pieces of artwork] are unique in the world,” meaning they are so well known and respected that their popularity extends beyond the city of Chicago. It is curious to think about what makes a successful work of public art, and why artists and observers alike are so intrigued with the art in Chicago. In my opinion, two works of Chicago’s public art, Monument with Standing Beast and Cloud Gate, serve as effective works of public art due to their complexity and appropriate placement in space, however Cloud Gate is more effective because of its personal appeal to the audience.
