Number 9 Mia Hamm was a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, two-time World Cup Champion, FIFA Women’s Player of the Year, and is arguably the best women's soccer player of all time. This essay will demonstrate how Mia Hamm made waves in the soccer world. Because her dad was in the military, he was stationed in various parts of the world. When Mia was young her father happened to be stationed in Florence, Italy where she fell in love with the game of soccer (Bosch). She returned back to the states there were little to no girls’ sports teams, so she opted to play with the boys (Hamm). She played multiple sports such as soccer, basketball, tennis, and more. She is known for being one of the best women soccer players in history, not only because she was an exceptionally talented soccer player, but because she changed women’s sports. She proved to girls all around the world that they can be successful athletes and that they can be just as good as boys or even better. As I continued to analyze Mia Hamm’s life, I realized that she is much more than a talented player. I realized that she was the best in the world and that she was a big influence to girls around my age to play soccer. If I happen to get a chance to research Mia Hamm again, I would search for information on the Mia Hamm Foundation. She made a “non-profit, national organization dedicated to raising funds and awareness for families in need of a marrow or cord blood transplant and to the development of more opportunities for young women in sports”
The modern Olympic movement was shaped through the soaring advocation of women’s rights (2, 8). An anonymous photographer (#2), in the 1908 Olympic games held in Great Britain where only 2 percent of women participated in the games, presents a photograph of Sybil Newall, a female British competitor at the games, and advocates women participating in the games. This photographer might have this view because he or she is a feminist that took place in the women suffrage movement and is baffled that solely two percent of athletes were women, and is urging the Olympics to make a great change. Hassiva Boulmerka (#8), an Algerian competitor that engaged in the 1992 games held in Spain where 29 percent of the athletes were women, believes that every woman has the ability of becoming an athlete, and must strengthen their mind and conscious, not just their body, to overcome these social challenges. Boulmerka, as a woman participant, may have this belief because she has underwent these obstacles as well, and wishes to motivate women in Spain to have the will and determination to overcome them and become a female athlete like herself. A good additional document that would better our understanding of how this social

At the age of ten I was the most energetic, go-lucky, confident girl. I excelled at my beloved sport, soccer. I had been playing since I was just a mere five years old, far longer than the other girls. Playing so long had helped me be at a higher level of skill than most of the other players on my team.
Mia Hamm, who is know as probably the best woman soccer play ever. And the best basketball player of all time, Chamique Holdsclaw. Women can achieve a lot of things if they put their minds to it and if there is a bit more encouragement towards women sports.
This is where she first came to play with United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) legend Mia Hamm. Together they become a potent forward team. During this year Abby was named Rookie of the Year and the MVP of the championship game in 2003. While all this is happening she is balancing going back a forth between training for her club and for her country. In 2003, her hard work eventually paid off in the result of helping the USWNT get a third place finish in the FIFA Women’s World Cup and winning the 2004 Olympics. After the end of the 2003 season, the WUSA ended and became Women’s Professional Soccer. Abby joined the updated version of the Washington Freedom this season, but eventually, the team moved to Florida. Through all the confusion of changing leagues and teams, she continued to find success in her club career. In her international career, she also continued to find success after the 2004 Olympics. For years she was a consistent working and scoring for the USWNT and helped lead them to another third place finish during a FIFA World Cup. However, in the following year, her career took a hit. She broke leg right before the Olympics and was unable to compete for months. She came back from her injury with a new level of motivation. This leading to her being named 2010 U.S. Female Soccer Athlete of the Year for the fourth time and in 2011 scoring one of the most famous goals in the history of women’s soccer against Brazil in the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup. These successes lead her to winning the most prestigious award in international soccer, the FIFA Women’s Player of the Year. However through all of her success she had yet to win on the ultimate stage, the Women’s World Cup. This eventually came during the 2015 FIFA World Cup in Canada when the USWNT finally won their first world cup since 1999 and Abby played a huge leadership
From a young age, children are conditioned to always think about what they want to be when they grow up. Many of them dream to be a ballerina, firefighter, or an astronaut. With age comes maturity, and those aspirations pass, but simultaneously new, more realistic ones arise. To reach these new goals, these children work toward their dream through dedication, which can be seen in the studying or training they do. In today’s society females have more opportunity to do what they dream. There are young women who are assiduously working to get a college degree and a steady job. Then, there are also women who are training to become a professional athlete, with the aspiration of becoming a member of the United States Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT). In today’s society, women can pursue their goals, however, if compared to men’s sports, there can be differences seen that keep women from reaching full potential, equality, and their dreams.
Have you ever wondered about how women now have their own sports or how they became accepted? Well, it all started with women who had perseverance and a dream, even if they didn't get recognized for it. ***(Marcenia Lyle was an incredible baseball player and impacted the game tremendously by never giving up on her dream, being a woman playing in a men’s league, and by changing the normal way of sports.)***
The latter conquest generated an unseen excitement about Women's sport in the general public. These events moved soccer from the back pages of a few big city newspapers to the covers of Newsweek, Time, People, and front of cereal boxes. Forty million people tuned in to Women's soccer team win the World Cup. This expansion of the U.S. soccer audience benefited not just the women, but the men's national team and Major League Soccer, too. These women showed great skill and determination even when they had not given obsession like Men's Team. The reward for their efforts was a gold medal victory with the winning goal.

During the 2012 summer Olympics in London, the Canadian women’s soccer team was able to accomplish something that Canada had not since 1936, earn a medal in a traditional team sport (Ewing). This team was led by their captain and arguably the greatest Canadian soccer player of all time, Christine Sinclair. Sinclair was Canada’s top player all tournament including an incredible performance in a heartbreaking loss in the semi-finals to the United States where she netted a hat trick (http://www.huffingtonpost.ca). Ever since this time, women’s soccer has grown tremendously in Canada and much of this is due to Sinclair’s performance (http://www.statcan.gc.ca). According to Article 2 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, “Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in [the] Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.” Because of the establishment of this international document, much progression toward the equality of rights for all with inherited and acquired traits has been achieved over time. In particular, gender equality has made a great deal of headway since the Olympic Games in ancient Greece. Even though this may be the case, there is no doubt that female athletes are far from considered equal as compared to male athletes in modern sports. In today’s sports society, women athletes are still discriminated against based on lower salaries, less media coverage, and lack of opportunity.

In every country, soccer stars are celebrated, they are young children’s’ heroes, and they inspire nations. Soccer is played in small villages in Africa, suburbs in America, and the arctic tundra of Russia, it can be played anytime, anywhere. It is the only sport that serves as a universal language, citizens in every country know the basics of soccer. Anyone, of any age, can play. It serves as a common connection for humanity and the players set examples for most of the world. If women are not being paid equally on the only platform that has the ability to reach the entire planet, it is no wonder that so many countries do not believe in women’s rights. However, if they were paid the same as men, they would be setting an example for the entire world. Many countries would begin to better understand that women are equal. After all, so many of life’s lessons are taught to children through games, especially games like soccer. This sport is a very rare, if not the only, opportunity to teach the entire world that women are just as equal as men, and not just on the soccer field. Women’s soccer could serve as the messenger to the world, and “kickoff” a new attitude for the equal treatment of women and really get the ball rolling on equal pay for women. This sport has the unique opportunity to use its influence to change attitudes that will seep
