Michael Jordan is one of the biggest names in sports history. While he was in the spotlight, many people idolized him. He repeatedly won almost every award that he possibly could. He became wealthy and had a huge influence on modern day society. Jordan placed the highest importance on, and strove for greatness in everything he did. He was a huge asset to the team, and the team meant a lot to him. Michael Jordan won a lot of awards over the years, some included the NCAA D1 championship, and the player of the year in 1984. He also made his first appearance in the Olympic Games being a part of the U.S. basketball team. That same year, the U.S. Team won a gold medal with Michael’s help. Pursuing excellence is not a bad thing, in fact, the bible says to always do things to the best of our ability (Ecclesiastes 9:10 ESV). When that becomes a problem is when it becomes too big. If simply being excellent at one thing or even multiple things becomes the thing you strive for the most, or the most important thing in life, then there is a problem. Then the pursuit of being excellent becomes disproportional. It is oversized and emphasized more than it should be. Jordan’s idea of what it means to be excellent replaced God.
