For this reason, I will work to coach in ways that support the growth of athletes’ character and create learning opportunities and situations in which athletes can practice and learn from. As a coach, I will lead by example and demonstrate good character because actions speak louder than words. For starters, I believe that student athletes should be a leader to their peers and in their community through attitude and hustle. This seems like it would be normal for someone that is seen as the face of their school, but often times these two things can come low on some athletes list of priorities. In school, instead of being the typical “jock” personality, student athletes should be the ones that portray a positive and caring attitude towards their peers. On the field/court, student athletes should always give their all. Many like to give up if they aren’t playing well, or if they aren’t playing at all, but this only brings the overall morale of the team down tremendously. Whether it is making plays or supporting teammates, everyone on a team has a role no matter if they are on the field or on the bench. Every single player has a part in success and one negative attitude can be the one to overtake an entire team.

Every child at some point in their lives dream about becoming a rock star, doctor or an astronaut, but the career that stands out the most is becoming a professional athlete. Why? One reason could be the ever increasing media coverage on each individual sport with certain channels devoted for just that particular sport, keeping viewers updated and thirsting to get out and play. Another could be the ease of getting out in the backyard as a kid to shoot the basketball, throw a football, or hit a baseball because it is harder to perform heart surgery or fly to the moon when you're only a child. When someone looks at an professional athlete the only thing that comes to mind is how far the person has gone in order to achieve his or her dream. It has become an instinct for people to just look at the superficial part of the athlete such as fame and riches which blocks out the people that worked the hardest. When you listen to your role model or witness their success this can give you a different outlook when trying to solve the problems you’re dealing with.
