Michael Longaker Research Commentary
Dr. Longaker’s research pertains to tissue regeneration and tissue engineering. Additionally he has experience exploring developmental biology, particularly the development and use of pluripotent and multipotent cell lines.
In Identification and Specification of the Mouse Skeletal Stem Cell (Cell, 2015), the Longaker lab explores the differentiation of skeletal stem cells into bone, cartilage, and stromal tissue. Analyzing mRNA present in the cell at different stages of differentiation allowed for determination of the genes that govern which cell type a skeletal stem cell makes. This knowledge was used to shift cell fates from cartilage to bone and vice versa. Additionally, the introduction of BMP2 and VEGF inhibitor allowed for the creation of cartilage in fat tissue. These experiments demonstrate a robust knowledge of the genes that govern the distinct outcomes for differentiated skeletal stem cells. Finally, it was observed that the skeletal stem

In this paper AAV6 is again used to infuse channelrhodopsin-2 into mouse tissue. However, this experiment injects it into muscle cells, which allows the ion channel to be expressed only in the neurons that activate the injected muscle. This results in activation of a given muscle in response to light. Instead of transdermal exposure, this experiment uses an implanted fiber optic cuff to wrap around the nerve and emit the light necessary for optogenetic nerve activation. The experimenters were then able to activate the muscle in a freely moving mouse using light, with high temporal sensitive (although other rhodopsins hold the potential for even higher temporal sensitivity). The implantation had limited effect on the natural gait of mice, and neural activation was measured with electrophysiology
1976. The conflict created when the will of an individual opposes the will of the majority is the recurring theme of many novels, plays, and essays. Select the work of an essayist who is in opposition to his or her society; or from a work of recognized literary merit, select a fictional character who is in opposition to his or her society. In a critical essay, analyze the conflict and discuss the moral and ethical implications for both the individual and the society. Do not summarize the plot or action of the work you choose.
Introduction: Throughout the book of Into The Wild Chris McCandless is known to be a wacko reckless idiot, and is also known to be courageous and heroic. However does a courageous person go out into the wilderness knowing that the outcome will be fatal? People viewed him from different perspectives and also have broad range of opinions of this young man. Some deemed him to be incredibly dim-witted or a man that simply just followed his heart. Evidence shows that Chris McCandless is actually a mix of both. The first opinion that described McCandless was brainless, idiotic, and extremely foolish. Many passages from Into The Wild can support this outlook.
David Berkowitz was one of the most feared killers in New York City in the 1970's. His crimes caused the death of six people, and the injuries to seven others. His crimes became legendary because of the bizarre content in the letters that he wrote to the police and the media and his reasons for committing the attacks. David Berkowitz, better known as Son of Sam, is a man with a troubled childhood and upbringing. From his many “Parental Figures” to believing that dogs were telling him to kill. During his reign of killing the police felt the pressure to catch David. "Operation Omega" was formed, which was comprised of over 200 detectives – all working on finding the Son of Sam before he killed again.
McDaniel College had first been created when its first building went up in 1866-1867. The school was the first institution that was south of the Mason-Dixon line and was coeducational. The first name that the school had was Western Maryland. That name originated because the institutions first board chairman (John Smith Wakefield) was president of the railroad, which had been called Western Maryland Railroad. The railroad had run through the college town. McDaniel had been one of forty colleges in the nation to be recognition in the New York Times education writer Loren Pope’s book, “Colleges That Change Lives” ("World Ranking Guide”). The schools colors are green and gold and the mascot is a Green Terror. There are about 1,629 students
Bruce Dawe, an Australian known poet, born 1930 is still one of the biggest selling and most highly regarded poets of Australia. His ability to write such influential poems has made an impact on a number of people, as each poem can be related to the ordinary living lives of Australians throughout the years. Bruce Dawe's poems are interesting because they comment on the lives of ordinary people. This statement is agreed on. In relation to the statement, three key poems can be linked being Enter Without So Much as Knocking (1959), Homo Suburbiensis (1964) and Drifters (1968).
According to his article, “The Battle Against Fast Food Begins In The Home”, the author, columnist and blogger Daniel Weintraub, argues parents, not fast-food companies or the government are responsible for their child's health and well being. Weintraub supports this claim by providing data from the Center For Public Health Advocacy on the subject of overweight schoolchildren, State law recommendations outlining nutritional standards, and his own experience with the problem. Weintraub intends to convince or persuade the parents or parent to accept the blame for their overweight child. From my standpoint, however, it is clear the
One of the most influential black politicians in American history, Andrew Young has made countless contributions towards the advancement of civil liberties across the globe. In the third chapter of Andrew J. DeRoche’s biography Andrew Young: Civil Rights Ambassador, he successfully details how Young applied his experience in the Civil Rights Movement to his political career to help achieve peace and promote human rights in the United States and throughout the developing world. DeRoche’s research uses many primary sources such as a personal interview, excerpts from Young’s own autobiography, and direct quotes from speeches he made in Congress, making his study both thorough and reliable. Ultimately, DeRoche’s
Hightower’s coming into an environment of high uncertainty with a high risk. Hightower should meet his managers individually and then follow-up with a group meeting that would be informal an “ice-breaker”, developing a top down strategy. Time is of essence, Hightower only has three months. Hightower will have to demonstrate that everything he is saying can actually happen. (Tichy, p. 428) Hightower needs to develop a European strategy developing a common goal. Hightower has to form a plan to bring his diverse country managers together. Any interpretation given must be provided in a matter that forms a favorable impression upon his country managers.
Prejudice is an unfavorable opinion or feeling, formed beforehand (e.g., before even meeting a person) based on non-personal characteristics (e.g., skin color, religious, gender). One form of prejudice is racism. Racism is negative attitudes and values held by people about other people based on their race. It is this attitude which causes one to discriminate against another. Discrimination is treating people unfavorably on the basis of race, color or sex. Prejudice and discrimination were prevalent in the 1950s and 1960s. This era was a time of hatred, a time of violence, a time when black people were colonized by the white colonizer, and it was a time of white-on-black racial violence. Because of this hatred, the whites
Andrew Wyeth was born July 12, 1917 in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. He was the youngest of five children. Andrew was a sickly child and so his mother and father made the decision to pull him out of school after he contracted whooping cough. He received schooling in all subjects including art education.
Towards the end of the 1930s, the United States government was preparing itself to progress from one despondency to another. Because the Great Depression was nearing its final months and the threat of becoming involved in the European war continuously intensified, it was decided that substantial amounts of energy, along with an ascending budget, was to be focused on developing military boats that could haul soldiers from ships to open beaches. In New Orleans, Andrew Jackson Higgins was known for manufacturing Eureka Boats, or shallow-watercrafts that assisted in the exploration of oil and gas throughout the Louisiana bayous. After many failed attempts Higgins was able to adapt his design
Ms. Wauneka was born on April 10 1910. Her father was policitian and her mother was a house wife. Her father had three wives, he was a very stronger leader on the Navajo Reservation, he was the first elected council men in the council business. Ms. Wauneka did not grow up like any other Native rez kid on the reservation. Once she was eight years old, she went to boarding school and four years later she went to a Governing Boarding School in Albuquerque, New Mexico. As she was in school she became more fluent with English like her father. During her time there were illnesses and flus going around so she decided to learn about health and nursing, so she could help people. She met her husband in school, his name was George Wauneka. They had eight
this research would be to identify the factors that are involved in the cell making process that determines cell specialization. A few of our extreme medical conditions, like birth defects and cancer, are a direct result of abnormal cell specialization. If researchers obtain a better understanding of the normal cellular process, they can isolate the causes of these deadly illnesses. The most exciting potential use for stem cells is the generation of tissues and cells. Many diseases are a direct result from complications of cellular functions or destruction of tissues in the body. Many people donate organs and tissues to replace failing or destroyed tissues. Unfortunately, there are many more people suffering from these disorders than there are organs to transplant. That is where stem cells step in. They will give humans a chance to have a renewable source of cells and tissues that will treat a slue of diseases, and disabilities such as, Parkinson’s, stroke, burns, Alzheimer’s, spinal cord injury, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and
To give a short overview of the steps that will be taken to complete the study. Obtaining stem cells, whether adult, embryonic or induced, shall be done using healthy mouse models and after ethical approval has been gained. The process to derive them will be detailed below, however they are also purchasable commercially with the benefit of being well studied and accompanied by a detailed analysis of properties, however with a
Martin Smith is newly employed in Greenlane Group, a top venture firm. Mr. Weatherstorm, his senior partner gave him three proposals to assess and evaluate. Martin’s task was to make a presentation about the advantages of the three data communication companies and come up with a credible recommendation on which of the proposals should Greenlane Group choose?
