Military Drones Essay

In the recent past, UAVs were most often associated with the military, where they were used initially for anti-aircraft target practice, intelligence gathering and then, more controversially, as weapons platforms. Drones are now also used in a wide range of civilian roles ranging from search and rescue, surveillance, traffic monitoring, weather monitoring and firefighting to personal drones and business drone-based photography, as well as videography, agriculture and as of recently, delivery services.

Currently, drone technology is being driven by military applications, and this will continue as they become increasingly varied in their roles. Drones will do our work. Drones will carry out tasks humans cannot, or do not want to do themselves. From remotely piloted ambulances to leading SWAT raids in hostile situations, from collecting garbage to moving goods, they become ubiquitous, even making their way into the media, gathering news footage and becoming entertainment tools.

The history of drones goes all the way back to World War I. The first drones that were used by the U.S. military were used in 1914-1918. The drone was called Kettering Aerial Torpedo and it was able to carry a 180 pound payload of explosives. Although this drone was never operational in war, this set up the future for other drones. Because of the Vietnam War, drones or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are still used in the modern society. Drones have become more advanced and methodological to provide updated images of particular locations or fly greater distances than an airplane. As P.W. Singer confirmed drones are the most revolutionary change in weapons technology in the history of man and are considered to be equivalent to the invention of the computer according to Bill Gates. Both of these given statements are ascertained through their use not only in war, but also surveillance, agriculture, and the building of the database by scientists for climate change.

The purpose of the first military drones, in 2002, was to find and locate Osama Bin Laden (Shafton).  Back then, drones weren’t equipped with nearly as many devices as they are now.  From 2002-2004, drones were strictly used for reconnaissance missions (Shafton).  At the time, the drone model in use was the SCPA-039 (“Surveillance and Communications Parsing Aircraft”) (Sharkley).  These drones were equipped with gadgets like long-range radar and three megapixel cameras (Hoffman). The three cameras were used to better triangulate the position of the target (Hoffman). In August of 2012 an engineer from Yemen by the name of Faisal bin Ali Gaber, lost his cousin and brother-in-law to a drone strike that was sent with no warning to the town. The CIA and the US military had been using the deadly and lethal drones for well over a decade, also resulting in a death a few weeks prior to the incident in Yemen. The US government notices and has taken steps in trying to reduce their attack numbers, but the strikes were not eliminated fully, still resulting in more deaths.The drone usage should have stricter regulations to reduce the attacks by the US military, not only do they take innocent lives, they also cost a fortune and are being used as killer weapons without restrictions.

The Research paper project was very interesting and educational. I learned so much about my topic, and learned how to be a better writer. The topic I chose had a lot of details and so much information about it. Researching drones were fun and fascinating.

Drones are wartime weapons the United States government uses to fight the War on Terror. Officially known as unmanned aerial vehicles, this type of aircraft plays a vital role in protecting the United States, as well as many other countries around the world.             First, we have heard that the new of the united states presence talking about the Middle East, you will hear a topic very frequently worry with drone recognition. The government will be involved in the process of trying to use drone technology in warfare. Drones, also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, are small aircraft that lack a pilot in the actual vehicle, but are remotely controlled from a considerable distance away. The drone may be equipped with a number of different weapons.

When I look at the world today, watch the news, or listen to the radio – I am often disheartened by the amount of violence I witness arise in our society. Recently, acts of hate and hostility have been exhibited all around, and alas have become a common occurrence. With the world so filled with violence, is it necessary to implement and build new weapons that make murder less difficult? A recent invention entitled a drone has sadly become a general weapon used in war. A drone is a human operated aircraft that makes killing impersonal and blinding to the pilot. When drones are utilized in violent situations, there are many civilian casualties. Drones should not be used as a weapon in warfare because they are an immoral and unsentimental device used to take away human life.

Some of the earliest documented use of unmanned aerial vehicles were in 1849 when the Austrian forces launched pilotless balloon over Venice. These balloons were launched with 30 pounds of explosives (Reade, 1958). The attack relied on the winds to get the balloons over their target. Once the balloons were over their target, they would be triggered to drop the bomb as close to their target as possible (Reade, 1958). Most of the bombs missed their targets due to the winds changing.
