Mind guides behaviour, which shapes a person’s capabilities and skills. Therefore, mind indirectly determines whether an individual will succeed in the future. So what minds are required for individuals to achieve future success? A researcher in psychology, Howard Gardner, answered the question: the disciplined, synthesizing, creating, respectful and ethical minds should be cultivated in educational institutions and at the workforce. Therefore, practitioners in the business world have to foster these minds as well to become informed and responsible business professionals. This essay will demonstrate why the five minds are required for a qualified business professional and how the Master of Commerce (MCom) program enables me to develop …show more content…
Without the synthesizing capability, people at the workplace will be overwhelmed by floods of information and cannot complete tasks in an organic way. As a result, the efficiency and the effect will both be adversely affected. Thereby, synthesizing capability must be fostered by business practitioners. Moreover, it has to be mentioned that the prerequisite of synthesizing skill is to foster the ability of analysing various kinds of information. Fortunately, these two capabilities will be frequently developed in the MCom. A typical example is analysing economic statistics and synthesizing them to make an investment decision in financial market. Creativity is also essential to develop because creating mind could put forth new ideas and breaks new ground (Gardner 2007, p.7). Unlike scientific and technological areas, major creative breakthroughs are relatively rare in business area. However, small changes in professional practices in the area could be made as well. For me, the creating mind includes searching for a better approach or analyse business cases from different angles. Even though it seems inappreciable to do these things separately, the accumulation of these trials might bring about significant improvement of study and working efficiencies in the future. From my perspective, this could be defined as major breakthrough in the business world. Thus, business professionals should often be aware of looking for new
What are creativity, innovation, and design, and how are these concepts important to meeting the objectives of an organization? To understand these concepts they must first be defined. Webster’s dictionary (http://www.merriam-webster.com) defines creativity as the “Ability to produce something new through imaginative skill, whether a new solution to a problem, a new method or device, or a new artistic objects or form. The term generally refers to a richness of ideas and originality of thinking. Psychological studies of highly creative people have shown that many have a strong interest in apparent disorder, contradiction, and imbalance, which seem to be perceived as challenges. Such individuals may possess an
Psychology is a term derived from two Greek words that translate to life explanation, which makes it an important element of daily life. The field of psychology can be described as a discipline that focuses on the study of mind and behavior. This discipline is characterized by several concepts and approaches that are used by psychologists in understanding human behavior. Since psychology is a broad field, psychologists not only use these concepts and approaches but also conduct scientific research that enables them to understand human behavior. Some of the most common psychological concepts that are used to modify or change an individual’s behavior include operant conditioning, positive and negative punishment,
In the context of creativity’s stated definition, we will proceed to group our arguments into three themes of factors: cognitive ability, expertise training, and environmental conditions. The human brain is highly adaptable and can continue to develop new cognitive abilities, even past adulthood (Norman, 2015). Proper cognitive expertise and training can help workers produce and operate in ingenious ways (Ginamarie, Lertiz & Mumford, 2004). Finally, the working environment can both motivate or stifle creative output. Managers can influence all three components: expertise, thinking skills, and motivation (Amabile, 1998).
In the business world, there are many issues that are vital to success. Understanding a combination of those issues is best, but even focusing on one or more to the detriment of the others can damage the way a person thinks about the business world and how he or she interacts with that world. The further one moves up in education, the more one learns about the value of these various areas of the business world, which include critical thinking, problem solving, ethics, a global perspective, and writing style. How one communicates and how problems are handled are both significant when determining whether a person is able to be successful in business. Because of the strength of globalization in this day and age, that is another area which has to be addressed. Those who are not interested in a global focus to their time and talents may see their businesses shrink instead of seeing the growth that they were hoping for in their work lives.
According to Baird and colleagues, mind wandering can enhance creativity goals and problems that were encountered. Creativity finds solutions that are novel, and high quality (Matlin, 2009). J.P. Guilford researched how we measure creativity. Creativity should be measured by divergent production. This research demonstrates the number of different responses that are made for each test item (Matlin, 2009).

Describe what evolutionary psychologists mean when they employ the term ‘theory of mind’. Use examples and research studies from Book 1, Chapter 2 to show why this theory is important in evolutionary psychology.
Creative thinking The free flow of ideas and positive work environment is the perfect catalyst for creative thinking.
To make a business grow and achieve productive and efficient results you need to invoke creativity which has always been an essential business skill. Since long time creativity has been applied to a business world as companies seek to use it in all parts of the organization to make it gain more profits and to be exceptional from others. A business person has to find unique solutions every day and he has to know how to react to situation creatively. Richard Florida (2002) stated human creativity is the ultimate economic resource. The ability to come up with new ideas and better ways of doing things is ultimately what raises productivity and thus living
According to Pfeffer (cited in Whetten & Cameron, 2005) leading positive change is one of the most important influences in helping organisations perform well. Another strength that I have identified through completing the “how creative are you” assessment (Carlopio et al, 2005) is creativity, possibly due to my ability to consider things from different perspectives as indicated by my preference toward the “thinking” dimension in my MBTI profile.
The study in this write up was conducted to carefully evaluate if any; the relationship between bring up new ideas and working guidelines and the benefits to a company down the road. Studies have over time suggested that agencies run under government make efforts to encourage creativity and new
The creating mind can also be called an innovating mind. The creating mind focuses on ways to improve or enhance processes which would in-turn improve productivity and profitability. The creating mind explores new ways and opportunities in improving profitability and productivity. From the mind analysis chart in figure 1.1 above, I have assigned 12% to the creating mind to explain how I have been using the creating mind in my professional development. The creating mind is the least mind from my chart above as I am not well utilizing it. I intend to establish an automation/engineering company that
William Blake, a poet that strongly believed in the power of mind, once wrote, "if we see with imagination, we see all things in the infinite." The Romantic poets use their imagination when gazing at nature, and therefore see and feel the infinite through their poetry. William Wordsworth expresses the serene beauty that nature possesses and its calming effects on the mind. Samuel Taylor Coleridge, one of the poetic geniuses of the age, uses nature and his imagination to create surreal atmospheres. Another Romantic poet, by the name of Percy Bysshe Shelley, shows great longing for the freedom that nature possesses and the freeing effect it has on him. These poets of the Romantic period look at nature from a higher consciousness
A mindset is a person’s way of thinking about various available business options. An American psychologist Howard Gardner (2006), in his work “Five Minds for future”, describes a person’s mindset as made up of five minds namely: the disciplinary mind which holds the mastery
In today’s knowledge-based economy, innovation has become the principal source of competitive advantages in global business; the success of firms now depends more on their intelligence capability – such as employee creativity – than traditional material assets (Amabile et al., as cited in Zhou, Zhang & Montoro-Sa ́nchez, 2011). The creative capability of individual and collective knowledge workers is the fuel that powers innovation in firms. While creativity leads to the production of new and useful ideas in any domain, innovation is the successful implementation of those creative ideas within an organisation (McLean, as cited in Zhou, Zhang & Montoro-Sa ́nchez 2011). In highly dynamic business environments innovation and creativity have become crucial for creating competitive advantages for the
