Internet and digital safety is a field in which I have focused and developed exponentially over the last six years. As a high school media specialist, use of digital apps and tools has increased with every year, making instruction for ethical use and safety a must for the protection and welfare of teens.

In general, the use social networking has many health and developmental benefits for the youth of today. Most teens have online accounts that they use to strengthen their friendships and stay connected with the people around them such as, school friends and teachers, groups they may be involved in, and maybe even family that are far away. Social networking also allows for an outlet to help teens with mental and moral support that they may lack in reality. This is really important especially for the youth who don’t necessarily have anyone to talk to or be there for them. Although one might argue that there are hotlines to help depressed youth, sometimes it’s not the same as having the support from your favorite social media site.

While there are many crimes committed on a daily basis in various forms, people who use computers seldom think about computer crimes, and what measures need to be taken in order to prevent those type of crimes. Also many people who use computers are not aware of the privacy and security measures that are taken advantage of. In order to handle these situations, it is important to be educated on topics such as how to protect your privacy (and who is able to view your personal information without you knowing), the crimes committed dealing with malware and other virus agents, and how to utilize tools and stay away from scams that you may encounter. These topics are important and should be addressed to all of the public, but particularly to children and the elderly who are the least of informed on the ever-changing technological world and how it can directly effect them if precautions are not taken.

In the digital world we live in now, one should be responsible and learn how to use digital information and technology safely, legally, and ethically. Why is this so important? For one, there are legal ramifications for inappropriate use of the internet. It is also dangerous. Someone can be “playing” the part of a fellow friend and actually be a predator of some kind. Or someone can steal personal information and one can end up with a whole would of problems. Children need to be helped with learning the ins and outs of internet usage. With the every changing internet and technology, one must be vigilant with their own protection and those that use the internet in their household.
