The values that define the Mortar Board program at Texas Tech are some that I strive to implement in and out of the classroom. However, in my personal experience these most often manifest through unusual ways not typical of a premedical student. Upon entering college, I was a biology major and dedicated my time to classes and extracurricular that directly supported my academic goals. I soon learned that preparing for my future could be more diverse than sticking to only science related activities. During my second semester I made some modifications to my plan by switching to a more specialized major in cell and molecular biology and minors in chemistry and theatre arts-acting with plans to attend medical school. This change in perspective also presented the opportunity to have a more diverse set of activities to further my horizons. I reflect scholarship in my life by not only pursuing educational experiences that directly relate to my long-term career goal, but …show more content…
I have participated in several Tech summer camps as a counselor, served as a First Year Experience Mentor for the Honors College, and worked as a Front-End Lead at Market Street. I believe each of these activities has impacted my leadership development and allowed me to practice my skills in different ways, but overall, they have allowed me to grow as a leader that attempts to create a plan of action with the well-being of the team being the top priority and taking into account individual personalities and strengths to accomplish a task. I also use a diverse set of activities to provide service to the Lubbock and Texas Tech community. This mainly includes spending time at the Lubbock Impact Free Clinic and being a volunteer counselor for Foundation Retreat, a Christian based camp for incoming freshman students. I was so fortunate to have these opportunities to serve my community and make a difference in someone else's
I have had the opportunity to serve in many leadership roles. Through those assignments, I have had the chance to speak to crowds, large and small. I have been on the seminary council this year and through this program I have the opportunity to speak to groups of people including my teachers and peers. I have been the secretary of the Rockette drill team and I have held several leadership positions in my church, including the Laurel class President. I have been a leader as spokesperson to my ward and to my stake.
A leadership experience in what I positively influence others and helped resolve disputes was Link Crew. Link Crew is a program where we help incoming freshmen to high school and show them around school and help them out on anything they need like homework. When I was a link crew leader I helped many kids who had low grades. While I was in this program I noticed that many kids had low grades and didn't turn in work or even their homework I did my best and talked to them about how they will struggle so much to get there credits later on some kids listen and did all their work where they at least passed their classes with a D or C. I had people who I got to meet during this I communicated with many people who joined this program and helped many kids. Students who come to high school think it will be very easy like in middle school but it will get harder each year. Many times I was helping the students I feel like It influenced them to work harder and be better in school and help each other in some ways. Link Crew was such a good program that it was where others students helped other students. I showed many leadership experience by joining this program.
My community leadership has been based in and around my school. My leadership ranges from teaching a cosmetology course at my school to planning events. It has helped me manage my time, allow to learn how to research efficiently and has taught me how to better communicate with those around me. I have met new and exciting people and have been given opportunities i wouldn't have received had I not gone to the school i am at.
I continued to be an active Avid Scholar because of academic achievements and Community service
I hold scholarship in high esteem, as education sparks the destruction of ignorance and the creation of a better world. I am driven toward knowledge in an effort to eradicate the hostility that has grown rampant in our world today, and I shall forever exercise commitment as well as diligence in my efforts to learn.
What this scholarship would provide for me is not just a viable boost in self-confidence and euphoric relief from the stress of student loans, but also an official change in direction. A change that will not only allow me to fulfill my desires of being different,
Through the years, I have been involved in a number of activities that will help me pursue my aviation career goals. One such activity is the National Honor Society. The National Honor Society instilled a number of traits in its members’. The one that I believe they used that will help me the most is the trait of scholarship. The use of scholarship has instilled in me to not only to seek out more knowledge when there is a problem I cannot solve, but also to constantly keep gaining new knowledge and skills to make myself more versatile and well versed. Doing this will help me to keep advancing, and gaining the knowledge necessary of my current goals I have in my aviation career. Another activity I was involved with is the United States Naval
My leadership qualities are exemplified by my involvement in the 4-H Hunter Safety Camp. This is a three day camp that combines the Hunter Education curriculum with hands on learning in field exercises. My involvement with the camp began in 2011, when I attended as a student and absolutely loved it. Every year after that I became more involved. The next year I was a youth volunteer and in 2013, the assistant coordinator. In 2014 I had the responsibility of coordinating and directing the statewide three day 4-H Hunter Safety Camp for 33 students (with a waiting list of 65). In each subsequent year I have continued to be the coordinator and director. Organizing this camp would become one of my biggest projects for the next three years. Despite my past experience, that first year I still did not completely understand the leadership and work required for coordinating and directing a camp.
I was always volunteering for class representative. I loved how I was helping the school and creating positivity for everyone else in the school. Although this may not compare to what ASB does for our school, I have experience that I could use that to influence my actions to produce an encouraging school tone. Another experience I have in leadership is in my camping group. I was in a YMCA dad-and-daughter camping program and for one of the years I was involved my father and I were in charge of the 300 person group. My job was to help the other girls and create entertaining activities for everyone to enjoy. I also planned many things such as; the general activity theme for each campout, how to make everyone feel welcomed and included, and the locations for the campsite. I also rewarded and identified good behavior and helped create new friendships with the people in our program. These leadership experiences are one of the reasons why I am a good fit for
A community that I am actively involved in is the J.Kyle Braid Leadership Foundation also known as ELITE at my high school. The J.Kyle Braid foundation is a club that I take part in through my school, but is a nationwide foundation. In my second year of high school, I was chosen to take part in a leadership training at the J.Kyle Braid ranch in Colorado, where I met 19 other girls from different schools. I learned from working with peers who are leaders at their schools. Being surrounded with other teens who share my desire to make a difference, was a life-changing experience. I came back from the Ranch as a stronger, more effective leader to my peers and a more confident individual. With the connections to other schools, I was able to meet up with the other J.Kyle Braid leaders to talk about issues and events at school and share ideas for
On the topic of success, receiving this scholarship would not only benefit me financially, but it is an honour to be awarded such a prestigious and valuable gift. Scholarships such as this recognize the dedication and hard work applied to all aspects of a student's life. I believe I have shown my commitment to my goal of helping people and my determination to succeed in my chosen career through my work and volunteer experiences. These include my time volunteering as a teacher's assistant, practicing in the hospital as a student phlebotomist, and working numerous jobs to pay for my

My interests and productivity have gotten me to places that I would not have been able to as a secluded student in the back row. I have ran for positions for Skills U.S.A. and volunteer projects after school. Fortunate enough to have the Phoenix Union School District award us a scholarship worth nearly $1,000 to attend 2 events over the summer of 2015. The first of which was a class offered by the Professor in the Design department, Yoshi Kobayashi, at ASU.
The primary value of my scholarship in aiding my academic and professional development has been in assisting in the payment of college fees, reducing the financial burden for myself and my parents. Being able to attend college has assisted me academically through access to college tutorials and activities offered by the Scholar’s Group. Attending events hosted by Sydney Ideas and the Festival of Dangerous Ideas offered an opportunity to be educated through exposure to a wide range of ideas, including debates surrounding access to education, the power of free speech and politics. This exposure and insight into debates that are at the heart of society supplemented my formal university education, exposing me to ideas that aren’t usually discussed within a classroom setting.
This scholarship, for me, is not the end but the beginning. My parents are hard-working individuals who left everything in China for me to have a shot at the American Dream. Seeing them come home each day tired all because of me gives me an uneasy feeling. Whether that feeling is purely sympathy or colored by a nuance of gratitude, it has shaped me into who I am. I'm grateful that my parents offered me this opportunity, and I am determined to be the first in my family to come home with a college degree. This scholarship will certainly open a doorway of opportunity lifting off my financial burden. What this scholarship will impact is my mentality to work even harder and at the same time focus more on my education. I have set myself a goal —my future. Now, I am will to take a leap of faith across the abyss toward my notion of success and what I need is this determination and a departing
