All over the world people are welcoming new babies into their families. They are preparing their homes for their newest addition and mothers are beginning to make some very important decisions on their lives, specifically breastfeeding or using formula. Many mothers do not have the ability to breastfeed, whether that be because of work, lack of milk production, along with various other reasons. However, many women do choose to breastfeed their children. Choosing to breastfeed is such a beneficial experience for both the mother and the child, but sadly women do face the undeniable scrutiny of others when they choose to breastfeed their children in public. Nursing in public comes with the breastfeeding territory and unfortunately mothers …show more content…
Nursing in public is a mother’s decision. Some women do not feel comfortable breastfeeding their child in public. She has the choice to pump prior to going out in public or arrange her daily to-dos in between feedings. The mothers that are uncomfortable may feel worried that other individuals will stare, give dirty looks, make rude comments, or even ask them to leave the place in which they a breastfeeding at. However, there are many ways a mother can nurse in public without that worry or uncomfortable feeling. To make the mother comfortable with nursing in public she should first practice nursing at home. She should use a cover to decide if that is how she wants to remain covered up from others or to see if she is showing too much skin. When the mother is ready to venture out into public, she could wear clothes that allow her breasts to be easily accessible such a button down blouses and special bras specifically designed for nursing. Covering up with a special nursing cover that buttons or ties to prevent it from slipping off the mothers shoulder is also a great idea to make nursing in public discrete. Nursing in a hidden location away from other people, such as a dressing room or a specific location designed for nursing like a lactation room will ensure that nobody will see the mother nursing her child (“Breastfeeding in Public”). Timing is
As I indicated earlier, women have been victimized for breastfeeding in public places. They have, therefore, been forced to resort to an alternative way of feeding their infants because the public would not have it. It has become harder for women to breastfeed although history has shown it that is something that has been practiced for a long time. On one hand, women want to be allowed to breastfeed whenever the child is hungry no matter the place; whereas, the public is not very accepting of this public display of care and affection between mother and infant. The medical community has indicated that it is important to breastfeed while the public wants the women not to do it where they can see it. They argue that exposing of the breasts is
Legislators developed laws for breastfeeding mothers to protect them from indecency exposure law. Some mothers would breast-feed their child in public at a restaurant, park, or maybe at airport; then would be asked can
Growing up around women breastfeeding was quite interesting; although I was young I was always embarrassed to be around a nursing mother. Most of us are aware that breastfeeding is the most natural way of providing infants with the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development. Breastfeeding to a lot of mothers is the time of bonding between themselves and child. Disagreement arises when nursing mothers decide to perform feedings in public areas. Then we have the groups of people that view breastfeeding in public places as indecent and offensive. In an article about current breastfeeding laws the authors state that “currently, the majority of the US states have legislation permitting women to breastfeed in any location and exempting breastfeeding from indecency laws” (Nguyen,Hawkins). I don’t think the issue is with breastfeeding itself. What may actually be the problem with the whole breastfeeding in public debate would have to be the action of breastfeeding, the locations where the mothers choose to breastfeed and sometimes age of child being breastfeed. Public breastfeeding can be a very touchy topic with strong feelings on both sides of the debate. After considering both sides of the issue, breastfeeding in public areas should not be done.
The first issue I must establish is who is being watched and who is doing the watching. The mothers are the party being watched, while the public is the watcher. This type of surveillance has become routine in our society because of how often breastfeeding mothers are in public. The watcher makes it a point to watch the event, as shown in the social experiment by Joey Salads6, and even comment on the event to the mother’s face. These comments are an attempt to change the mother’s behavior after collecting data. After establishing how often this surveillance occurs, I will be able to determine the most important question: why. I plan on speaking to breastfeeding mothers and the general populous to
It seems like every other day there is a new scandal involving a mother breastfeeding in public. When did breastfeeding become so controversial? This is the purpose of female breasts; besides, it is economical, and conveniently there on demand. Experts agree, the benefits of breastfeeding are overwhelmingly evident; but Americans have sexualized breasts to such an extent that something as natural as breastfeeding an infant has been misconstrued into a lewd act. Since much of a mothers decision on whether they will breastfeed or not is based on public perception; therefore, breastfeeding in public should be promoted and encouraged for the well being mothers and
What could possibly be wrong about a mother nourishing her child? Absolutely nothing. Many people view a woman's breasts as sexual items. The main purpose of breasts Is to breastfeed a child after birth. I came across The Milk Truck while back. The Milk Truck is there “to create a mobile breastfeeding unit that allows mothers to feed their babies in places where they have been discouraged - restaurants, shopping malls, public spaces, etc. Babies should be able to eat anywhere, and everywhere". I am absolutely for breastfeeding in public.
Breastfeeding might be considered the next worst thing you could do after procreation, not realizing it is a natural biological aspect of life. People regard breastfeeding in public as inappropriate and believe that women want to breastfeed in public, so they can exhibit their breasts on purpose. In the video “4 Reasons Women Should NEVER Breastfeed in Public,” Kristina Kuzmic sarcastically talks about the reasons why women should never breastfeed in public. “We’re moms, we don’t need to go out in public. We gave up that right when we decided to start popping out babies. We don’t need to go shopping or eat out or have a social life.” This shows how much we still need to progress in our understanding of breastfeeding and its importance for both mother and child. In the article “Why I’m Glad Someone Told Me To Stop Breastfeeding In Public”, Amber Hinds emphasizes the importance of breastfeeding. “Breastfeeding is best for the baby; it is best for the mother; it’s best for the family, best for employers, best for the community and best for the environment” (18). Breastfeeding not only has benefits for the mother and baby, since it can help create an emotional connection, it also helps those around them see that breasts should not be sexualized. Breastfeeding is natural and if women are shamed for breastfeeding in public, it’s unlikely that they will continue doing
Mothers not being able to breastfeed in public? That’s absurd. Just this year a huge controversial took action with a whole lot of famous people. As a man, this issue does not directly affect me, and it would be easy for me to not weigh in. However, as a HUman, I recognize that if we are all up for our women to breastfeed in public we will have healthier babies and mothers. Therefore, mothers should be allowed to breastfeed their kids in public when and wherever they feel the need to because it's natural, they do not have to worry about stopping what they are doing, and most importantly it is biological.
Women should have the right to breastfeed in public places without feeling intimidated or embarrassed. Breastfeeding in public is one of the most controversial issues in society today. An issue which is misunderstood as a disrespectful act of indecent exposure, when in fact it is the most natural thing in the world. Women in restaurants, airplanes, and other public spaces have been told to leave or to cover up while breastfeeding their children. Many of these mothers say they feel unwelcomed, uncomfortable and even intimidated. To society breastfeeding in public is disturbing and disrespectful, but what many don’t realize is that a human being is being fed. A child’s feeding schedule should not be changed simply because people think feeding a baby is disturbing. Many mothers choose to breastfeed for the benefits, their culture,
Throughout the years there has never been a problem about breastfeeding in public. Today's generation discriminates other young or middle age mothers who feed their newborn child in public. Today's fashion creates a dramatic change on how people dress. Shirts or shorts that are created small. As if any more clothing lines can create anything more smaller as they are now. Why tell a mother not to feed their newborn in public but it's okay for girls to be half naked walking around in the streets without being judged. Then the formula companies, who created the formula? No one knows, the face is never shown, people assume that formula is a gateway from having to feed their newborn regular breast milk. This generation is odd, why be rude and why
I can't believe that people can be so rude. They don't understand the struggle that comes with caring for our children. Why must we have to go to a private place to feed our babies? we are not indecent. We are covered. there shouldn't be such a fuss about breastfeeding in public. there is nothing wrong with caring for our children. I was among those who chose to stand with Michelle Hickman. We chose to stand up for what we believe in. I presume the people who gave us dirty looks don't have children. They don't realize that it is very difficult to care for a baby. Sometimes we don't have time to go find a place to feed our children in private. Children are very dependent on you so they shouldn't have to wait for care. They should be able to
First off let me start off by saying breastfeeding is something I am deeply compassionate about. I have 3 kids who all were breast fed. The ability you have to feed your baby with your body is an amazing thing & it’s something I support whole-heartily. Whenever I see a mom breastfeeding in public I always make sure to give her the Mom nod and smile, to sorta tell her she’s doing awesome, and to keep it up. It takes encouragement to breastfeed and especially in public. Now I am not particular on how a woman nurses her baby in public. Covered or not, it really doesn't matter to me as long as they are breastfeeding their baby.
All mothers who want to nurse in public, go for it! All people can do is say hateful words and try to scare you away. You do you. You keep taking care of your infant and keep succeeding in life. Your baby will thank you when they know you did good. I’m not saying feeding your infant with a bottle is a bad thing, because it definitely is not. But just at least give breastfeeding a try. It will help you and your baby out in the future. I just think mothers should be able to nurse
Breastfeeding is natural and breast milk is the best nutritional choice for infants. Breastfeeding helps babies to fight infections, prevent allergies and diarrhea, and protects against several chronic conditions, breast milk contains antibodies that help infants fight off viruses and bacteria, and is easy for an infant’s stomach to digest. Also, breastfeeding helps the infant and the mother to bond and it can help the mothers to lose extra calories fast, which they gained during pregnancy. However, breastfeeding in public tends to be controversial, and breastfeeding mothers are forced to use the public bathroom to feed their babies. If anyone of us can have our lunch or dinner in public, why shouldn’t a breastfed baby has the same rights? And who wants to have lunch in the bathroom? Women should breastfeed anywhere except in the bathroom. women have a legal right to breastfeed her babies in public, and women’s breast is created to nurture babies. People argue breastfeeding in public is indecent exposure and unconformable to those who are watching a mother nursing a child. Breastfeeding in public shouldn’t bother other people because it is unrealistic to expect mothers to feed their babies in places like bathrooms.
However, some people think of breastfeeding as Nudity. Breasts are viewed as sexual items rather than a natural way of providing nutrients and comfort for a child. Anxiety about breastfeeding in front of other people affects breastfeeding for women with low self-confidence or who feel society disapproves of breastfeeding in public. They start to feel uncomfortable. Women should be able to have rights to legally breastfeed their babies in public. Mothers report that that they felt more comfortable breastfeeding in a park than a shopping mall. In some cases, women are asked to leave the premise due to them breastfeeding. Parents do not want to explain to their children about breastfeeding. So, they label breastfeeding in public indecent. Parents who are concerned about their children asking questions should just explain to them. This will help people understand the benefits of breastfeeding.
