Abstract
As human development continues to expand further into the Santa Cruz Mountains, the mountain lion habit incessantly is decreasing creating numerous problems and concerns; such as corridor loss, depredation, and public safety. Over the past decade an increase in encounters has occurred, directly correlating to the increase in habitat fragmentation. Because mountain lions have the greatest geographical range of any land mammal, their home ranges require very large and contiguous territories. The destruction of their previous widespread habitat has created new complications that threaten not only the mountain lion, but the overall biodiversity of the ecological community. Mountain lions are both apex predators and opportunistic carnivores, making them a keystone species. As a keystone species, the mountain lion’s ecological role is extremely

The most popular common names include mountain lion, puma, cougar, and panther. Forced to seek refuge from human conflict in the mountains, Puma concolor’s habitat is now primarily restricted to the highlands in North America; generating the well-known, regularly used terminology mountain lion. Although it is important to note the mountain lion also thrives in steamy, tropical lowlands, but this opportunity is no longer exist in North America due to habitat loss and fragmentation from urbanization. At this time it is approximated that 71,117 square miles or forty six percent of California is considered suitable mountain lion habitat. In the 1970’s California initiated protection of the mountain lion, and since designated it as a specially protected mammal; making California the first state to legally prohibit hunting. Currently California is the only state that mountain lions are not legally considered big-game or trophy-game
The trophy hunting of at-risk grizzly bears is a controversial topic in Canada. It is part of the Canadian cultural inheritance. Hunting grizzly bears are considered to be a legitimate recreational activity in some parts of Canada. They inhabit in the forest and near the costal line. The numbers of bear reached tens of thousands before, but because they are fierce and threatening human beings, they are being hunted and killed. Also, the low mortality rate of grizzly means low population, but they play a critical role as a predator in the ecosystem. The problem is over-hunting and industrialization will cause extinction of this rare species, and lead to disharmony between the government and First Nations. I mainly support the ban of grizzly
The subspecies was also listed as a highest priority “Species of Special Concern” by the State of California (USFWS, 1998). There are many factors that play into why the Point Arena mountain beaver is classified as endangered. In addition to their low reproductive rate, according to USFWS (1998), the vulnerability of the mountain beaver results from two reasons: 1) few populations with extremely limited distribution; and 2) the number of individual populations are low. Habitat loss and fragmentation is another concern for the Point Arena mountain beaver, any disaster, natural or manmade, has the potential to impact the subspecies (USFWS, 1998). These threats include, elimination or degradation from land development, livestock grazing, transportation and utility corridors, invasion of alien plant species, and timber harvest (USFWS, 1998). Additional threats to the subspecies include, predation by feral animals and household pets, poisoning, human caused disturbances, clumped and fragmented distribution, vulnerability to localized catastrophic events, like fires, storms, landslides, flooding, prolonged drought, and/or disease, and most notably genetic isolation and drift (USFWS,
This lab report focus on the risk of extinction of the panther species of Florida due to habitat loss (urbanization), collisions road kill, intolerance and poor genetic diversity have been confined to this animal to live in a small part of South Florida become one of the most endangered mammals on the planet. About 160 cats remain in the wild. Therefore the objective of this report is to disseminate knowledge regarding the extinction of native species by identifying the mortality, its causes, area of action, level of ecosystem and possible solutions to prevent their extinction
The Monument Valley is home to few wonderful and beautiful animals. There is the Longnose leopard lizard or the Gambelia wislizenii, red-tailed hawk, the tree sparrow, mountain lions, and jack rabbit. First is the Mountain Lion. The mountain lion is a large cat with an elongate body, powerful limbs, small head, short face, short rounded ears, long neck and a long, round, black-tipped tail. An adult total length is from 171 to 274 cm in males, 150 to 233 cm in females. This animal is athletic, It can climb tall cliffs, and run at a very high speed. Another animal is the The tree sparrow, these animals are small and usually found in the Winter. They often fluff out their feathers. Unlike
Nature has a unique way of working, then the humankind comes and ruins it all. The California Sea Lion is feeding off a species on the endangered species list, The Salmon. The Salmon attempts to travel upstream thru the Bonneville Dam where the Sea Lion awaits them. The Sea lion then eat them not allowing them to travel upstream becoming a greater problem for the already endangered species.
In Astoria, Oregon, invasive colonies of California Sea Lion have become overpopulated causing depleted populations of native fish, economical issues for the coastal city and they have caused immense damage to the docks. Due to the destructive nature of this invasive species on this ecosystem it becomes necessary to determine what is the most effective way of deterring California Sea Lions from colonizing on the Astoria docks and shoreline. If we relocate the California Sea Lions then, there will be a larger consistent decrease in the sea lion population than when scare tactics were previously used.
When you think of a mammal who regularly kills humans, the white-tailed deer does not come to mind. Unfortunately, the white-tailed deer often jumps in front of vehicles, causing more than one million collisions resulting in over two hundred deaths a year. In James Gorman’s article, he persuaded me that by bringing the eastern cougar back to its original home, the number of deaths would significantly reduce. He explains both the benefits and downsides of cougars returning to their natural habitat.
If you show up to a gunfight with a pocketknife, you’re in trouble. Likewise, if law officers show up to a standoff with a gunman without the proper tools, they will be in a tremendous predicament. For such a situation, the LENCO Bearcat is the exemplary vehicle in which to arrive. The Medford Police Department clearly did the right thing when they bought a LENCO Bearcat.
It is commonly acknowledged that, in a biological ecosystem all species are closely affected each other through a food chain. However, what people don’t really recognize is how hugely one species can affect the entire ecosystem. The reintroduction of wolves in Yellowstone National Park depicts a vivid example how one predator can contribute to the recovery of biodiversity and its astonishing impact on physical geography.
Living in the Atlantic Forest, Golden Lion Tamarins are essential for the survival and protection of their family, and also the existence of their ecosystem. The Golden Lion Tamarin hides under the dense canopy of the Atlantic Forest. This shelters itself from a wide array of aerial predators. These primates acquire most of its food and water from plants called epiphytes. An epiphyte is a plant that grows on another plant, without harming it. Small insects and vertebrates, that inhabit these plants, are a significant part of the Golden Lion Tamarin’s diet. Golden Lion Tamarins are diurnal, meaning that they are active only during the day. They use tree cavities and nesting holes as their sleeping quarters. These cozy tree cavities provide them
In 1973, a Canada Lynx (Lynx Canadensis) was illegally trapped on Vail Ski Area. While mildly tragic that this individual Lynx had been killed, the real tragedy was not realized until months later. As time passed, no more Lynx sightings were recorded, nor were any trapped, and no carcasses were found. Months turned into years, and years turned into decades; finally the Lynx was regarded as regionally extinct in Colorado. The reason Lynx was not seen anymore in Colorado was as of result of an illegal trapper’s escapade in the mountains. This species ranged across the vast northern boreal forests from Alaska to eastern Canada, including the northernmost U.S. territories, expanding along the coniferous forests of the Rocky mountains as far
The case of the mountain lion P-45 is complex for two reasons. On one hand, he has killed several domestic animals in the Santa Monica Mountains leading people to fear for their property and themselves. On the other, he provides a much-needed new gene flow into an area that suffers from severe inbreeding that could lead to the population entering an extinction vortex. I will argue that P-45 should be left in the Santa Monica Mountains ecosystem and later relocated only when two conditions have been met because it would adhere to the ecocentric principle of conserving the biotic community. The first condition is that the wildlife corridor must be constructed across 101 Freeway, connecting the isolated area with those other mountain lions inhabit.
I favor the Californian breed because they are a large, versatile commercial breed that have many interesting, and unique characteristics, and I would like to continue to raise them.
Majestic, noble, and brave, this famous iconic wild animal on the planet has captivated the people since the beginning of time. They are most feared by other animals thus, known as the king of the jungle – no other than the lions. Member of the genus Panthera, the lion is one of the big cats in the Felidae family. A lion’s head and body size average about 4.5 to 6.5 feet and tail of about 26 to 40 inches in length. A lion also weighs about 265 up to 420 pounds and a size relative to a 6-foot human. These mammals are also carnivores. Lions have always seen hunting in groups called pride. While lions generally avoid a full-grown elephant, lions still prefer their preys large like the zebras, buffaloes, and giraffes. Poised as the top animal in the ecological pyramid, lions have strong physical qualities, fascinating reputation, and an unfortunate decreasing number of population.
Many anmals have different ways on survivng on this planet. Lions are animals that are feared. When a lion is hungry they don't just got to a McDonalds and order a burger. They hunt for food. They're tactical and quick. For example, a gazele is walking around minding its own business. But, what it doesn't know that a lion is stalking it waiting for the right time to leap out and attack. A lion can hunt at anytime of the day because they have night vision where it can see both during the day and during the night. A lion must find its mate to reprouce. When they do reproduce they have cubs, and they take care of their cubs until its old enough to hunt and live its own life. Even though a lion is feared it still has to survive because other animals,
