Slide 1: Personality Personality is made up of the characteristic patterns of thoughts, feeling and behaviours that make a person unique (Cherry, 2015). Although no single definition is acceptable to all personality theorists, it is agreed that personality is a pattern of relative permanent traits and unique characteristics that give both consistency and individuality to a person’s behaviour (Feist and Feist, 2009). Slide 2: Abby Lee Miller The hit reality television show, ‘Dance Moms’ shows the life of a junior elite dance team taught by Abby Lee Miller. Throughout the show, Abby is portrayed as a loud and aggressive dance teacher obsessed with her team winning. Abby is most notably known for her aggressive and non-empathetic approach to creating amazing dancers, but is constantly questioned id this is the best teaching approach for 6-14 year olds. Slide 3: Trait theory Trait theory is one of the most critically debated fields of personality studies. Many psychologists have theorised using the trait theory approach to personality, which promotes the difference between individuals. Hans Eysenck developed a model of personality based on 3 set traits. Unlike other theories, Eysenck only used 3 universal traits to describe an individual’s personality, they are: Introversion- Extraversion, which focus on whether an individual focuses on their inner or outer world. Neuroticism-Emotional Stability focuses on a person’s moodiness versus even-temperedness. Psychoticism refers to an
A new trailer for “Dance Moms” season 6 shows Abby Lee Miller facing her fraud case, at the same time try to manage the Abby Lee Dance Company (ALDC) and maintain relations with the mothers of her young dancers. At least one dancer might also walk on from the dance studio, according to Headlines & Global News (HNGN).
In the very first episode of the show Abby Lee Miller, who is the dance coach and choreographer of the team, tells the girls that they are going to perform a new dance in every competition that they enter (“The Competition Begins”). This means that they will only have one week to learn an entire dance routine. With only one week to learn a dance the time that the girls on the team, and their mothers, spend in the dance studio is significant. Since the moms are spending so much time in the studio, they are one of the focal points of the show. The mothers of these girls often argue about how certain girls get more attention than others. They also discuss how Miller spends more time and gives better choreography to certain girls and to make sure that they will place the highest at competitions. The dancer that Abby spends the most time with is
Funder (2007), states that personality is a combination of how people think, feel and behave, with the psychological mechanisms behind those patterns. Therefore, it can be defined as consistent behaviour patterns and processes which happen in the mind of the individual. These behaviour patterns suggest that there are individual differences and that personality is consistent. The combination of these areas, and confliction of these is what psychologist’s try to understand.
Hans Eysenck, a psychologist well known in the field of personality based his trait theory on biological explanations; whereby he believed genetic and biological factors were significant elements of personality (Eysenck 1990). Eysenck also held the view that an individual’s personality traits, or what he referred to as ‘temperament’ was an exact result of one’s genetic make-up (Chamorro-Premuzic & Furnham, 2005). Eysenck encompassed the idea that there was a need to highlight the significant dimensions of personality, create a way in which they could be measured and then link them with experimental procedures. Subsequently, Eysenck developed a model of personality based on a theoretical and statistical approach to the classification of traits. This is
Many times in people 's lives, they are asked to define their personality and they do not know how to respond. What is the actual definition of personality and how can we define our own? Personality is a unique consistent pattern of thinking, feeling, and acting. In other words, personality is a combination of characteristics or qualities that form the person in you. Like a painting, there are many different color schemes that combine in order to show the big picture. There is no such thing as a person without a personality. Some people may not have very extroverted characteristics; this means that they have a shy or colorless personality.
Personality, like most core Psychology subjects, is difficult to define. Personality is essentially the science of describing and understanding people. No two people are the same; even identical twins will tell you that they are very different to their identical counterpart. There are some who are anxious and there are those who are risk-takers. There are some who are carefree while there are those who are highly-strung and there are those who are over-confident while some are just plain shy. It is this issue of differences that are fundamental to the study and examination of personality.
Chapter 10 is over personality. Personality is described as a pattern of enduring, distinctive thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that characterize the way an individual adapts to the world. The book goes over psychodynamic perspectives, trait perspectives, personological and life story perspectives, social cognitive perspectives, and biological perspectives.
Burton, western & Kowaslki (2015) describes Personality as the enduring patterns of thought, feeling, motivation and behaviour that are expressed in different circumstances. In other words it can be defined as differences in characteristics in a person, including their way of thinking, likes, dislikes, sociability, openness, feelings and behaviour, which make them the person they are and differentiates them from others. All these traits when brought together is known to be the personality of that particular person.
Personality is looked at everyday purposely and accidently. Whether you are judging how your new professor for the semester will be, or if you are studying your best friend for a project, personality is studied abundantly. While there are many ways to define personality, there is not a worldwide definition around. Personality is the unique combination of patterns that influence behavior, thought, motivation, and emotion in a human being (boundless.com). That is one of many ways of defining personality. When examining personality, there are four main approachable theories including: The Psychodynamic Approach, The Trait Approach, The Social-Cognitive Approach, and The Humanistic Approach.
Personality is defined as “a) the sum total of the physical, mental, emotional, and social characteristics of an individual. b) the organized pattern of behavioral characteristics of the individual” (Dictionary.com, 2010). Whether we realize it or not, personality defines us as people. There are many facets to my personality,
Personality is a pattern of relatively permanent traits and unique characteristics that gives both consistency and individuality to a person’s behavior (Feist & Feist, 2008).
Eysenck’s theory of personality is based on physiology and genetics. According to him our personality is inherited and determined by environment. He believed that our personality traits had psycho-physiological foundation.
I would define personality as what makes each individual different. Each human being’s personality is as unique as they are. While most people define personality to describe another’s more apparent characteristics, psychologists use personality to try to give reason to similar
