I would rate Mr. Escalante as depicted in the movie Stand and Deliver as an excellent teacher! Ron Clark a renown and excellent teacher in his own right, states there are 11 characteristics that should be found in every teacher who is raising children who love to learn. These characteristics included enthusiasm, adventure, creativity, balance, compassionate, fun, common sense, appreciation, resilience and accountable. I observed every one of these characteristics in the character of Mr. Escalante in the movie Stand and Deliver. In the beginning of the movie, as Mr. Escalante began this experience, I do not believe he knew things were as bad as what he encountered on the first day of school. Classrooms with graffiti on the inside, insufficient chairs for the number of students assigned in the classroom, high school students attending school without school supplies, students vandalizing their school and defecating in the office, rigging the bell to completely disrupt the school day, even students inside the classroom without any desire to learn.
I would not be intimidated by Mr. Escalante’s techniques. I have the utmost respect for teachers who are willing to go outside the norm to teach children. Mr. Escalante believed that there was only one thing that was needed for the children to succeed, ganas. It was all he told the Principal he needed and all he asked for the students “You’re going to work harder here than you’ve ever worked anywhere else. And the only thing
Within the six traits of building relationship described in The Skillful Teacher: Acknowledging, Communicating Value, Respect, Demonstrate Fairness, Exhibit Realness, Humor and Fun are all traits that I have practice before with CoaH students. I think the three have used to build my strongest student relationships are Communicating value , respect and exhibit realness. One very strong student relationship that I had during my first two years here at CoaH was with one of my tutorial student Laury Alexandre. When I first met Laury in September of 2013 we did not start off on a great foot. She and the rest of her group had a lot of push back. They really tested me in the beginning to year. Laury went afar as giving me the silent treatment for 3 weeks. I think the one situation that really brought us to an understanding of each other was after progress reports for first quarter when Laury got a B in one of her classes. She was very upset crying hard it was afterschool I went to comfort her and took her aside listened to her issues and comforted her. The next day she sent me an email thanking me for trying to make her feel better even though she was being very unpleasant towards me in tutorial. She write that it must have been hard to care about some else’s feeling when they treats you so badly and that I must really be very good person. I write back to her that was not difficult at all and that I had nothing to put aside to help her that I enjoyed her very much as a student even
Jaime Escalante was phenomena teacher in Los Angles. He was a successful person in the category of outer and inner success. His outer success were to educate his students to the point that is fun education and to pass the calculus placement test. The inner was that somehow he get through his student that education is the most important thing. He explains the importance of attending college. The reason why he goes out of his way to assist these students because poverty that the school is located at, has a toll on the students. As result, students’ expectation are low. There is one scene were the teachers had a meeting and Jaime says that teachers need to set on high expectation on the students. Students need to have “ganas” in order to succeed but without expectation the students
Outstanding teachers are respected by students, faculty and families and are professional when performing all duties and communicating with students, faculty and families. When dealing with families a teacher must be understanding and empathic of students' diagnosis and family life challenges. An outstanding teacher needs to be open-minded to others ideas and theories and to changes. You also need to be consistent to provide stability to your students, as well as know the content that you are teaching. An outstanding teacher has to be able to be organized, patient, ask for help and participate in professional development to learn new techniques to grow and learn and stay up to date with new findings. An outstanding educator needs to encourage students to push themselves, reach their potential, show them that you have confidence in them and give them acceptance to be who they are, inspire students by showing them a love for learning so that they will have a love for learning and being in school and a teacher needs to have drive and passion to make students reach their full potential and putting in extra hours to make sure your students are
While there are many ways to be an outstanding teacher, every high-quality teacher should, in my opinion, have these skills and dispositions:
his writing. He brings good examples, but they are not credible. I agree that teachers, who get good
According to the 1988 Hollywood film, which Stand and Deliver, which depicted his career as a teacher, Jaime Escalante's passion for teaching and desired success for all students to succeed and surpass to status quo motivated him to organize and establish an advanced mathematics program with a handful of students.1 Because of it, many students at Garfield High School were able to pass the advanced placement calculus test for numerous years. As evidence would show, according to the ETS results, more and more students were successful because of his unorthodox teaching style. Another thing, Escalante could somewhat connect with the student he was teaching. While growing up, his father was an abusive alcoholic and after his father died, to provide for his family and himself, he worked odd jobs until he was 19 years old when he joined the army. After that, he was persuaded by
A fellow educator would hear these answers as examples of the teacher’s ability to engage students in every lesson, her desire for all students to succeed, and her competence in subject matter. Although an outstanding educator exudes many other characteristics, these three qualities are essential for one to be considered an outstanding, high-quality teacher.
Another area that should be looked at is the teachers, specifically Francious, the main teacher. He has some great qualities, for example, he tries to help Souleymaneto, first by modifying an assignment, he asked Souleymaneto to use pictures to express himself, this made him more likely to succeed because he enjoyed doing the assignment. Francious even tried to protect Souleymaneto after the incident the occurred in his classroom.
I believe there are many skills and attributes that are necessary to an outstanding teacher; one’s ability to keep students engaged, the desire to see all students achieve, and knowledge of the content taught are attributes of an outstanding educator.
While the #RedForEd movement recently emerged in my state and several others, concerning teacher pay and their strong impact on students. Additional questions surfaced in order to find the perfect utopian future for my local Sierra Vista high school, Buena. As much as it takes a happy teacher to generate a happy student, it works both ways! With this in mind, what important qualities do our students feel matter in our local teachers? Recently I conducted multiple interviews involving four different Buena High students in seek of what they’d like to see in their teachers and subs.
The characters in “Stand and Deliver” went through a great deal in this movie and all brought something else to the movie. The star of the movie is Jaime Escalante played by Edward James Olmos. Escalante is the teacher of the students that quits his job with a computer company to teach at Garfield High School. He comes to teach computer science, but the school did not get the computers and he has to teach math. He takes over the math class and expects a great deal of his students and challenges the faculty to allow him to teach Mr. Escalante encounters some opposition to teaching calculus from Mr. Molina, the principal and Raquel Ortega, a teacher. Mr. Molina is the principal of
While observing Mrs. Cirrincione, I liked her classroom management skills. The students seemed to know what was expected of them at all times. Mrs. Cirrincione also connected much of the students’ lessons to their personal interests, which means she has taken the time to get to know each of her students. Mrs. Cirrincione pulled sticks throughout the day giving each student the opportunity to participate. Throughout several of the lessons, Mrs. Cirrincione would give the students helpful hints to remember the content. I struggle to remember new content, so I appreciate that Mrs. Cirrincione took the time to teach strategies to help the students
A teacher is one of the noblest professions there are. It is also very well one of the most criticized professions there are. If we are talking about a school teacher, then evaluating their effectiveness becomes, sadly, a fairly narrow scale. Because of standardization, the results of students test scores is the primary evaluation of the teacher’s effectiveness. It has also been said that test scores do not equal intelligence, so other more important characteristics
Although I have had many different types of teachers, there are two that stick out more than any others. The first was my third and sixth grade teacher. She was the best teacher I ever had. The second was my seventh grade teacher. She was the worst I think a student could have had. Both, these teachers had very different teaching styles and very different out looks on teaching. To be an effective teacher the teacher must respect the student and be willing to go the extra mile to help the students learn all they can. In this paper, I will discuss the effectiveness of these two teachers and how their teaching styles differed.
Again in my own opinion, I truly think this made his presentation crash for me in the simple fact that at some point in an educator's life you will have to deal with all sorts of different people difficult and not, but a teacher has to be prepared and grasp and or uphold all situations in a calm, peaceful and professional manner. Him, having said that made it seem as he still has not yet accepted that fact. Overall the teachers visit was very informative I did take a lot of mental notes from what the teacher said into account and do hope to practice as well as utilize some of his methods in my own classroom to see how well they work for me. He did inspire and motivate me to try hard and put everything that It can possibly give into teaching and the college process because the payoff is life changing. Having this professional education instructor come back to his college in which he graduated and having the luxury of conversing with students sitting where he was not too long ago about being an educator was very inspirational to me. Also to see the amount of the commemoration doctor dresser was awarded to this man gave me the intuition of doing the same and come back to my college to be bestowed the occasion to tell aspiring
