It is said that it takes 10,000 hours to master something. Great musical performers are no exception. Miles Davis, Maria Callas, and Mozart are examples of musical genius who spent countless hours perfecting their craft whether it was in the genre of Jazz, Classical, or Opera. Callas was known for being an opera legend. Her teacher, Maria Trivella, reflected on her first impression of Callas’ voice saying. “... it swirled and flared like a flame and filled the air with melodious reverberations like a carillon. It was by any standards an amazing phenomenon, or rather it was a great talent that needed control, technical training and strict discipline in order to shine with all its brilliance.” This comment showed that talent was there but she needed to put in hours strenuous technical practice to establish herself as a legend. In a way I can relate on the level of practicing then having to prove myself to my teachers. I spend most of my year perfecting arias and practicing my sight reading to show my talents whenever time calls for it. Last year I didn’t have very many opportunities to prove myself except for one time at State Competition. Performing at state was my chance to show the skills I’ve learned from my preparation and from the people around me.
Going to state was kind of crazy. If you would’ve told me in middle school that I had taken up voice lessons, performed in front of an audience, and was seriously considering a career in music I would of laughed at you
In order to become an expert performer Abbott and Collins (2004) suggest that talent development requires the possession of Psychological Characteristics for Developing Excellence (PCDE), which as the performer moves through the transition phases become further developed. PCDE’s are both trait characteristics and state related skills such as self-belief, dedication and discipline (Abbott and Collins, 2004). Another significant aspect of becoming an expert musician is deliberate practice. Deliberate practice requires determination with the correct motivation for the performer, and the necessary time and effort roughly equating to 10,000 hours (Ericsson et al., 1993). MacNamara, Holmes and Collins (2008) state that expert musicians require numerous aspects to reach the highest level; natural talent and/or deliberate practice combined with social context and significant others are needed to maintain performance at this high level. One’s skills and talents define what someone does and how others perceive them. In Outliers, Gladwell speaks of the “10,000 Hour Rule”. He says that if one practices a skill for 10,000 hours, then they will master that skill. Some musicians, like the Beatles, are known for their music and their musical talent, because they practiced over 10,000 hours. Their musical skills help develop their identity and how others recognize them.

Does classical music really help you study better? Many recent research studies show that music idoes in fact improve cognitive thinking. In 1993, researchers at the University of California at Irvine discovered the so-called Mozart Effect - that college students “who listened to ten minutes of Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos in D major K448 before taking an IQ test scored nine points higher” than when they had sat in silence or listened to relaxation tapes. Other studies have also indicated that it doesn’t matter the artist; people retain information better if they hear classical or baroque music while studying.
Mozart died in 1791 and his widow, Constanze Mozart, sent the manuscripts of the canons to publishers Breitkopf & Härtel in 1799 saying that they would need to be adapted for publication. The publisher changed the title and lyrics of this canon to the more acceptable "Laßt froh uns sein" ("Let us be glad!"), similar to the traditional German Christmas carol, "Laßt uns froh und munter sein". Of Mozart's original text, only the first words were documented in the catalogue of his works produced by Breitkopf & Härtel.[3]

The classical music period extends from 1740 to 1810, which includes the music of Haydn, Mozart, and the first period of Beethoven. The classical period of music combined harmony, melody, rhythm, and orchestration more effectively than earlier periods of music. With the natural evolution of music slowly changing with the culture, the baroque era had ended. That era had left a structure, articulation and periodic phrasing of music which would shape classical music.
