1. Over the course of my career I have had the opportunity to work for dozens of leaders that aided me in the development of my leadership style. As one would easily recognize not all leaders had a constructive impact on my career but rather provided leadership traits to avoid. One person that I have learned a considerable amount from is my father. My father instilled in me the fact that I need to work hard, complete the task at hand, dedicate time to the betterment of my people, and myself and have fun while doing all of this. Another person that introduced considerable leadership influence on me are my grandfathers. My grandfathers lived very different lives; one was a businessman, while the other was a US Army post-WWII veteran, yet they had a uniformed message. That message was continuously grow, be aggressive in studies and work, stay active, and finish what you started. Two additional influencers of leadership are CDR Michael Fredie and MCPO Darrick Dewitt. CDR Fredie is a natural leader, and lives the quote made famous by Theodore Roosevelt, “Speak Softly and carry a big stick; you will go far”. He has the uncanny ability to influence others to work harder through passion and inspiration. Whereas MCPO Dewitt is an authoritative figure that demands respect and continuously inspires his workforce to better themselves in pursuit of bettering the unit, rating, and service.
2. I thought about defining leadership long and hard, and briefly wrote down my initial thoughts on
What's mine is yours. Having lived a year in a student hostel I understood this phrase was the best to describe my first year student life. We shared everything: all of bright spots, all of difficult moments, all of the books and all of the cakes. My roommates are my best friends now and I trust them as I would myself. I believe amazing adventures and close friendship are waiting for us too! Also I believe, my dear roommate, you’ll get at least one new hobby living with me. I promise I’ll share to you with my frenzy for mountains. Oh, that’s really amazing! I’m a participant of the university tourist all around team(sports tourism university team member) and every weekend we get to go to incredibly picturesque places of Zailiyskiy Alatau.
There are several leaders that I have admired in my career over the years. One in particular that stood out was a Chief Master Sergeant in the Air Force who I served under. He was a very intelligent and vibrant leader who placed importance in military customs and core values. He was one whom I emulated in the military because of his task –motivated leadership style. He focused on the goals of the organization with the emphasis on service before self. The implications of his style of leadership lead me to believe that there was little to no relationships formed with lower ranking airmen. He was always able to get the job done because of the driven culture he represented. I learned a wealth of knowledge and information from this particular leader; I was able to create a balance by embracing his style of leadership and relating it with my style, transformational leadership. I believe it was successful, because of my efforts to focus in on the mission and create a balance in inspiring, influencing, and motivating Airmen across the globe.
Throughout the course of freshmen year I have developed different skills and opinions on writing. I feel I have created a more mature style of writing and a better understanding of literature. I have changed my view of writing over this semester and acquired a strong liking for it. The importance of writing has become more visible throughout the past few months. Writing is crucial in many aspects of a person’s life. I have grown to be a more powerful and well built writer throughout this course.
This class has been a stepping stone to my accomplishments as a writer. Over the course of semester, I have been challenged to tackle several different writing styles and succeed in each one in a unique way. It is through the rhetoric, technology, research, and collaboration used in this class that has progressed me as a writer and an individual.
As previously stated, my personal leadership philosophy is to be the leader you aspire to be. This leadership philosophy sets a framework for individuals to model their behavior after those that have been successful within the organization. Generally speaking, our greatest leaders have attributes and traits that have directly contributed to their successes. The key here is to understand that if you want to be a great leader in the organization, then you have to look for, identify, and model those behaviors of those ahead of you that have become successful. Take for instance a small boat coxswain. The coxswain is a position of great responsibility. There are good boat drivers and there are great boat drivers and when making a parallel to this leadership philosophy it makes sense that an up-and-coming boat driver will want to model their behavior and performance after a great boat driver; i.e. be the leader you aspire to be. The same method of mentorship and learning is true when it comes to leadership. Some leaders possess personality characteristics that naturally allow them to lead people with ease. These same leaders are made even greater when they incorporate teachable leadership principles into their leadership styles and techniques. When they utilize these techniques in their day-to-day leadership their actions may appear natural to an onlooker, but in fact leadership is a practiced art and in order to and maintain proficiency within leadership it must be continuously refined. Being a great leader is more than just watching and mimicking behavior. More important than constant observation, continually life-long learning and application of styles, techniques, and models of leadership will help propel individuals to the forefront of
This is my personal presentation of my leadership philosophy that spans my 22 plus years of Coast Guard service. I’ve never precisely thought of who my leadership influences would be, I never felt like I could live up to the transformational leadership figures like George Washington and other notable history figures. I’ve had allot of disappointments in my life, maybe someone I did look up to in a leadership capacity that turned into a disappointment. Then again, no one is perfect so maybe my rationalization of no perfection has caused me not to have a specific leadership influence. As allot of experienced Coast Guard members know, we learn valuable lessons about raw leadership over time, with certain experiences, trials, tribulations, and the like. We all form assumptions and generic wisdom which we believe works well with those below us in the chain of command, and those above us. My opinion is that leadership encompasses everyone around us from CO-workers, to family, to people we interact with in public. I believe that true influence is a 24-hour, 7 days per week life undertaking that people that are thrust into certain positions in the Coast Guard start to assume over a long period of time. A vast number of leaders throughout military and U.S. History have inwardly reflected the subject of leadership, many have written extensively regarding their personal style, or the style of other historical figures they have looked to for an example. I feel like I am a simple person
Leadership is dynamic, charismatic and fragile all rolled up into one. There are many words that describe leadership and leadership is defined differently by all. As I sit and type this paper I realized the date, 28 Aug. On this date 10 years ago, I was thrust into a roll that would define my leadership style. Hurricane Katrina made land fall over the city of New Orleans (NOLA) on 28 Aug 2005, this storm created havoc and destruction never before seen in the United States. I was in charge of 12 Coast Guardsman and 3 Coast Guard Airboats in which we would crew. Upon arrival in NOLA we were joined up with the 82nd Airborne Division and assigned 12 Scouts from the 2/505 platoon. These men were on the heels of returning from battle overseas and had been home for less than 30 days. Again these soldiers were thrust into action, but now they had a completely different mission. Joining forces with the Coast Guard and conducting door to door urban search and rescue was now the priority. Over the next 27 days we all grew to trust and count on one another and from the deplorable conditions in which we all suffered it lead to my leadership philosophy.
As a multimedia designer, I’ve often struggled to clearly define my design influences. While “design” (especially any form of graphic design) is traditionally related to print mediums, I was heavily influenced, as a child and young adult, by classic cinema. Additionally, I’ve always been very musically inclined, and as a result of this I usually seek to infuse my work with some form of harmony and rhythm. As one could imagine, this has created a sort of identity crisis – I had a desire to take both music and design classes in college, however a two-year degree does not easily facilitate this. Choosing a multimedia design degree over music was a difficult decision; however, it was not a process whereby I concluded “I’ll just have to design graphics, oh well.” Rather, this new field of study helped me to channel a creative side of myself that I had not fully understood before, and also through understanding of my core interests, it helped me to be able to continue to produce works that were not just technically correct, but also pleasing to me.
Numerous people like George Washington, Michael Jordan, and Dr. Martin L. King Jr have had major accomplishments that helped achieve a goal to change their future in a certain way. Moreover, accomplishments have great importance in one’s life. They help improve one’s self-esteem, also, they give encouragement to succeed and achieve a goal.
I have achieved many accomplishments in my lifetime, but there is one in particular that really sticks out the most. Being on the academic team is my biggest accomplishment. I have played baseball my whole life, and I’m sure most people think of me as a jock. This essay will show that I am more than just an athlete, I’m an academic too.
The article I chose attempts to define a leader, the types of leaders, and the ways in which a person can be an excellent leader. The author, Tom Decotils, lists three types of leaders: An appointed leader or someone who is a leader in name, an accepted leader or a leader in practice, and an authentic leader. Decotils suggests that when obtaining a leadership role, one must strive to be an “authentic leader,” whose focus is on results by moving followers forward through teamwork and insisting on personal excellence. (Decotils, 2015, para. 1) Decotils states that an authentic leader has good intentions, grit, and a constant yearning for improvement. (Decotils, 2015, para. 5) Additionally, an authentic leader must have a good
I have several notable accomplishments in both my education and my work experience. One of the most notable accomplishments seemed to be around my internship past summer. I joined the tech development team and from that point of time transformation started happening, I started learning about various technologies and develop the website with my team and from that summer training experience I got an offer for creating a website and make that a brand. I successfully created the website and the brand on time. The company had received positive reviews and leads from customers after going through website and its
Of all my accomplishments, there are three in which I take the most pride. The first is earning the Boy Scout rank of Eagle at the young age of 15. Considering only about 4% of boys in America join scouts and only 5% of those who join ultimately earn this coveted rank, I am proud of doing so.
Throughout my life there have been many leaders, some beneficial and some deficient, from which I have drawn lessons in my overall leadership development. Leadership values have been gleaned with respect to professional aspects and general life teachings. As I was contemplating leaders, one person came to mind as having the most substantial impact upon my life. Through his guidance helped to transform me into the man that I am, and will continue to impact the person that I aspire to become in the future. The most influential role model in my personal development is my father, Freddrick Lee Long. His disposition and peaceful realization of his life personally projects an aura of contentment and true exhilaration. Throughout his life, he consistently displayed these attributes in his methods of professional and personal leadership in the simplest ways. Over the course of my life, he has been a profound influence upon the molding of my leadership style and attributes.
My father has taught me that great things don’t come easy; I’ll need to work hard for what I want. He is someone I look up to on a daily basis. I see how he stays calm and confident while dealing with difficult situations. I pay attention to how he talks to his clients and manages his company while putting aside time to spend with his family. These are all things I would like to be able to do in order to attain a great leadership.
