There were two things I was certain of when I enrolled into the University of
New Orleans: my career path would involve working with children, and I wanted to go into the field of psychology. Over the course of three years, I have gathered valuable experiences that have contributed to my research interests and career goals. My involvement in research, my work in the Juvenile Justice System of the Greater New Orleans area and mental health services has prepared me to become an active graduate student in the Clinical Psychology Program in the Child/Adolescent track at Howard University. I have been a research assistant in the Developmental Cognitive Affective Psychophysiology (DCAP) Laboratory at the University of New Orleans for a little over a year. As a research assistant, I run electroencephalography (EEG) experiments, administer questionnaires (e.g. the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire and the Adult Temperament Questionnaire), schedule participants in the laboratory, observe and collect data, perform data entry and train new research assistants in conducting EEG experiments. As an intern I work with adolescents as a mentor and tutor, while under the direction of a probation officer. This experience has afforded me the opportunity to become a confidant to the youth that exhibit at-risk behaviors and tutor those who struggle in various school subjects. Working with a probation officer has involved sitting in on court hearings, assisting in the juvenile intake processes, administering pre-dispositional investigations and participating in school visits. There are several steps to the criminal justice system, one of them is Probation; a program where the offender’s freedom is limited; usually they have a curfew, and have limits on the things they do. Probations Officers are a huge factor in getting the juvenile offender back on the right track following their sentence. One of the problems with probation is that rather than helping the offenders, sometimes it can hurt them. Some scholars argue that the officers do not take the juveniles, specifically females, seriously when it comes to referring them to receive mental health treatment. In contrast, other scholars argue that Probation Officers are the key to connecting the offenders with mental health care. I will begin by talking about how the gender of the juvenile contributes to the unjust treatment of juveniles on probation, then I will talk about probation officers as “the problem,” and lastly I will talk about a solution. I will conclude by stating my research question and making some contributions as to what can be done to build a stronger relationship between the offenders and the probation officers.
As described by Kelly Peterson juvenile probation officers work with high risk teens along with their peers, family, work, school and involved activities. People like Kelly do there best to try and keep juveniles out of the adult system and further criminal systems. Over the course of Kelly’s visit she talked about many things some main points being; Her caseload and how she manages it, the main kinds of cases she deals with, and the court experience of people in the juvenile system.
“Since 1929, when the first Juvenile Court Statistics report was published using 1927 data, probation has been the overwhelming dispositional choice of juvenile and family court judges” (Torbet, 1996, p. 1). The juvenile justice policies shift from just desert to treatment. (Torbet, 1996) Probation is the disposition of choice with juvenile offenders; however, probation purposes was based solely on the goal of rehabilitating the juvenile offender because institutional confinement builds stigma and social environment issues. (Davies & Davidson, 2001) And this was a way to establish parental involvement. A wide range of diversity in the field of criminal justice studies is of great importance. As a second-year graduate student, I was given an opportunity to work closely with U.S Probation and Pretrial Services as an intern. This internship allowed me to further my knowledge in correctional studies and provided the necessary resources to complete my master’s thesis. I was also exposed to various policies and procedures pertaining to probation practices while gaining a vast amount of knowledge assisting with investigations, liaisons between state and local agencies, and the intricacies of offender case management. Furthermore, I was able to form close relationships with employees of the agency who have assisted in my current career endeavors.
As was shown above, prevention/intervention modalities have been effectively initiated for children as young as three to four years of age in an effort to address the issues and possibilities for juvenile delinquency. Effective treatment of juveniles in the system comes with specific responsibilities to be considered meaningful and significant. Juvenile treatments should reduce recidivism, have well-described procedures in treatment, have well-defined training protocols for therapists, monitoring procedures for treatment and proven evidence of long-term outcomes (Heilbrun, 2005). Delinquency prevention programs are not designed with the intention of excluding juvenile justice personnel. Many types of delinquency prevention programs, especially those that focus on adolescents, involve juvenile justice personnel such as the police (Siegel & Welsh p. 401). Often, for the purposes of funding, effective programs should also have a documented cost/benefit analysis attached to its program characteristics (2005). America’s juvenile justice system has been around for ages and has had problems since its creation. The courts have failed to devise a way to help juveniles and keep them from even entering the justice system. More often than not, juveniles are forgotten and never dealt with until they reach the point where they are either going to be placed within the system or receive some sort of diversion or alternative. This is where the problem exists. There needs to be more communication between the different levels of the juvenile justice system. Particularly between the officers that may arrest these juveniles, the probation officers that deal with them, and of course the judge in the court system. The juvenile court is supposed to have provided due process protections along with care, treatment, and rehabilitation for juveniles while protecting society. Yet, there is still considerable doubt as to whether the juvenile justice network can meet these goals (Cox, Allen & Hanser, 2013).
My entire life I have always been on the search of a career that would fit my persona, fit who I truly am, and to become someone who will constantly have the ability to help people through their difficult problems that they face. Throughout my life I have been deemed the type of person that people felt comfortable coming to with their problems. Maybe people feel this way because they sense that I have a sympathetic ear? Well, all I can say is that human behavior has always seemed interesting to me and that is probably why I made the decision to go down the psychology career pathway.
Juvenile probation is the most used program throughout the court-ordered services that are provided. At least 60-70 percent of juveniles that are arrested are placed on probation first. Probation is used for low risk first time offenders. When ages 17 and under enter the system, usually they are arrest and placed into a system for juveniles. The juvenile justice system is important and sometimes necessary because it give young people the opportunity to correct social and behavioral problems that they might have. I want to help changed the youths who have entered into the system lives better, and put them back on the right path.

In today’s court system, probation is a very common alternative for most all offenses. Probation is used as an alternative opposed to serving jail time. The role of a Probation Officer is summed up best by the mission statement on display in my hometown’s probation office; and the statement is, “The job of a Shelby County Probation Officer is to effect positive changed behavior in each client through the use of evidence based practices, while becoming proven leaders in promoting and improving community safety. ” There are some similarities and difference between the juvenile and adult probation departments. Some of their similarities included how they work within the day to day and their active duties within the legal system. They differ in the sense where, one is working intensively with the youth, because they’re sentenced probation time is very short and rushed period, yet the adult officer could be working with a client for years and years. Although they mostly worked through the same training and evidence based practices, the two departments are different in their own entirety.

I believe that the answers to the greatest questions and problems in life could be gained through a better understanding of the human mind. Psychology is a study of human behaviors and trying to understand why we do the things we do. Because of this I would be interested in a career in psychology though there are many different career fields within psychology. I would be most interested in a career in health psychology though there’s an extensive learning process. It is important to understand the education or training requirements,skills,and talents needed salary and benefits offered and duties for a particular career when making this decision.
Psychology is the study of the mind, its biology, and behavior if the individual. The father of psychology, Wilhelm Wundt, used objective measurement and controlled analyzing to find and emphasize separation between psychology and philosophy (McLeod). Wundt opened the Institute for Experimental Psychology at the University of Leipzig in Germany in 1879, using his background in physiology to study reactions and sensations (McLeod). There is no doubt that he, along with the later help of Sigmund Freud, launched what is now modern psychology. Psychology and its research helped the world understand the inner workings of the mind and how it affects everyone around us.
I want to be a psychologist. I would love to learn all about the way people act, think and feel and at the same time try to help them. I have a very easygoing personality and I love to have fun and laugh. I ask a lot of questions, and I think I am very easy to get along with. Some career goals I have is to finish college, I would like to find a job I want to keep that I could make a career out of, and just take it one day at a time because I have desire to make the right decisions and live a pleasant life.
