My Career Interests: Pursuing A Career In Psychology

There were two things I was certain of when I enrolled into the University of
New Orleans: my career path would involve working with children, and I wanted to go into the field of psychology. Over the course of three years, I have gathered valuable experiences that have contributed to my research interests and career goals. My involvement in research, my work in the Juvenile Justice System of the Greater New Orleans area and mental health services has prepared me to become an active graduate student in the Clinical Psychology Program in the Child/Adolescent track at Howard University. I have been a research assistant in the Developmental Cognitive Affective Psychophysiology (DCAP) Laboratory at the University of New Orleans for a little over a year. As a research assistant, I run electroencephalography (EEG) experiments, administer questionnaires (e.g. the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire and the Adult Temperament Questionnaire), schedule participants in the laboratory, observe and collect data, perform data entry and train new research assistants in conducting EEG experiments. As an intern I work with adolescents as a mentor and tutor, while under the direction of a probation officer. This experience has afforded me the opportunity to become a confidant to the youth that exhibit at-risk behaviors and tutor those who struggle in various school subjects. Working with a probation officer has involved sitting in on court hearings, assisting in the juvenile intake processes, administering pre-dispositional investigations and participating in school visits.
