My Definition Of An Everyday Hero By Joseph Campbell

Have you ever wondered what makes a hero? What makes other people think of this person as a hero? A hero isn't born overnight, a hero doesn't only do one small thing and he becomes known as one. Hero’s are made up of many characteristics. They are made up of many events in time that they did something that influenced people or the world. There are some things you can do to become more of a hero, to become known as someone who helps people in their lives or helps the community.

A hero is somebody who commits an act of remarkably bravery or who has shown an admirable quality such as great courage or strength of character. (Encarta, 2009) Joseph Campbell has come up with eight of his own characteristics of a hero. Joseph Campbell is known as a scholar of mythology. There are several people in our times that are considered a hero. Whether, these heroes are fictional or nonfiction, they all portray some kind of heroic abilities.

Two books can seem completely different from each other when judged by characteristics such as genre, plot, and theme. However, if people were to look at the books together and as a whole, they might notice one striking similarity between the two. That striking similarity is known as the hero’s journey. First observed and documented by Joseph Campbell, the hero’s journey is a concept in which heroes, or people who commit actions for the greater good, follow a three-step cycle known as departure, fulfillment, and return. At the first stage of the hero’s journey, the hero receives a call to an adventure that takes him from the comforts of his home. According to Joseph Campbell, "A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself" . This means that a hero is person who is made a sacrifice for the good of others. A Hero is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as "a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities" . This means that a hero is someone people look up to. Anyone can be a hero. Heroes have qualities such as bravery, strength, and selflessness. Mothers, soldiers, and Odysseus are all examples of heroes.

Author and lecturer Joseph Campbell, has correlated a hero as usually being a male, often of lowly birth, but with special powers or a higher birthright, the hero doesn’t know about. Also, the hero parents are often dead, absent, or uncaring, and the hero is judged by the actions he takes and the way he reacts and relates to people. In the opinions of others, a hero is also a person admired for bravery, great achievements, abilities or good qualities and is regarded as a role model. The Monomyth The hero's journey (or the monomyth) is a pattern that all myths around the world have. This pattern was developed by Joseph Campbell. This "monomyth" is divided in three parts, the departure, initiation and return. This three parts have different events (like the call to adventure, the road of trial, refusal of the return, etc). The original monomyth was developed by campbell, but other persons have made their own versions of the monomyth, some of these people are David Adams Leeming, Phil Cousineau and Christopher Vogler.

The easiest paper that I have written throughout the semester was the Heroism paper. I believed the Heroism paper was the easiest because I could connect to my topic. I chose to write about Christ's Journey and how it relates to the “Hero’s Journey”. I have a burning passion for studying the bible and learning about how Christ has impacted everyone's life. An example of something I learned is: “Jesus set out to heal the servant and says, “ Let thy be done”, and the man with leprosy was instantly healed (Truesdale 36).” Leprosy is a disease that wasn't curable at the time that they where living in; therefore, knowing that Jesus was able to heal the man and cure his leprosy he gave people hope. The dictionary definition is “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” In the movie Hercules a child named Hercules was born to two immortal gods, Zeus and Athena. The child Hercules was snatched by Hades’s two minions, the minions gave the child a potion to turn him mortal. Hercules didn’t drink the whole potion leaving him with enormous strength. The rest of the story talks about his trials as a mortal with super strength and how he becomes a hero to many. We think that Mrs.Edmundson and Mrs.Hicks, the counselors at our school, are great examples of an everyday hero. Mrs.Edmundson created the Reach Team which is a program that allows kids in middle school the opportunity to Reach out to their community and interact with other people of varying ages. After Mrs.Edmundson created this amazing program Mrs.Hicks volunteered her time to help develop and make the Team better.
