The first experience that I forced me to think about my gender occurred when I was fairly young. I was playing tag with my best friend Matt and his sister Melissa. At one particular moment, it was my turn to attempt to “tag” them. When I was chasing Melissa, I pushed her slightly too hard and she tumbled to the ground. Neither of us thought anything about it, and we continued to play until dusk. For this assignment, I chose a 14-year-old girl who lives in Yemen. To begin, I will review the changes that the female body goes through during puberty. The onset of puberty is different for every individual, but it can be as early as the age of eight. Puberty for females characteristically begins before their male counterpart (Stanford’s Children’s Health, n.d.). The first perceptible change is breast development, where breast buds appear. The physiological changes that take place between the ages of 9 and 15 are easily recognized as the adolescent growth spurt. These hormonal changes include the body's rapid growth rate; the growth of pubic hair; a more visual appearance of armpit hair. There are also changes in the functioning of the reproductive organs; the mammary glands in girls; and development of the sweat glands, which can cause acne breakouts. In both sexes, these physiological changes happen at different rates and times. This period of life can be stressful for a preteen. For me, I was particularly embarrassed about all the new found body hair and excess sweating. During this stage of life, appearance is deemed of high importance. Everyone wants to look and feel attractive. A teen who develops early or late can take on a lot of teasing from his or her peers.

The causes of this aren’t often found. Some conditions or situations such as, hormone displacement, infections, brain tumors or abnormalities, can lead to this. Puberty is a tough time in a child’s life. It is a time when children start to see changes in their bodies that makes them concerned. This is especially true when the child is having this happen at an early age in life, usually significantly prior to that of their friends of the same age.

The rising problem concerning many parents today is a phenomenon known as precocious puberty, in which the appearance of physical and hormonal signs of puberty occur earlier than normal. Girls at the age of eight and boys at the age of nine or younger who undergo the first stages of puberty are considered abnormal. Although, precocious puberty occurs primarily in girls researchers are finding that it can happen in boys as well. The causes of precocious puberty are still being explored and the science is definitive, yet researchers have found that this early onset of puberty is connected to chemical exposures in the environment, obesity, brain injuries or other growths, and even socioeconomic factors.

Three years ago, I never would have imagined I would be who I am today. Three years ago, I enrolled Norton High School, terrified of the unknown, but now, I am excited for the unknown. For I know myself better, as do I understand the world around me now. I never comprehended such a simple activity called marching band, would have impacted my outlook on life forever.

At a young age I became aware of my passion for people. I spent long summers volunteering at nursing homes, and working with friends to do constructive projects around the community. During my teenage years I was well-known for my loving spirit and compassion for people. I was a problem solver and as well the go to person for family and friends. This passion continued throughout my teenage years, as I volunteered at the Department of Veterans Affairs, assisting disable vets. By the time of adulthood, my love for people and quest to help had become my profession. While attending Santa FE College, I obtained my Certified Nursing Assistance Licenses, which allowed me to assist people on a more skilled level. However, I am now seeking the

I still get nightmares about my horrid middle school days. Especially seventh and eighth grade, those were the absolute worst. I still have flashbacks of horribly straightened bangs covering my eyes, black versions of my uniform I would dress myself in, and what I now call emo music I would drown myself in. The memory I won’t be able to ever forget however was on September second of my last year of middle school. Throughout that entire year I was a complete mess. I was crying and sobbing over trivial things, playing “Therapy” over and over again, and watching my friends vanish right before my eyes. The people I grew to trust simply threw it back in my face. At that point I felt as though I was worth nothing. September second was death day, and I do mean that literally. I remember being indifferent to the confrontation, apathetic towards my dad’s worried concerns, and being completely numb throughout that entire day. Ironically enough it was one of my acquaintance’s birthday that day, and I spent it trying to murder myself. Wonderful.

Sitting in class for the first time, it was half of what I expected. I expected to sit by people I didn’t know, learn about old things in new lights, and writing a lot of papers. What I didn’t expect was me hating college. I am not as creative as some teaches would like, but that isn’t my personality, and I dint want it to be either. I fully expected college to try and morph me into a perfect little student that I knew I wasn’t. College so far to me hasn’t been fun and I will treat it like Wal-Mart. When I say that, I mean that I will get in and get out as fast as possible. If I pick up stuff along the way then alright, but if I don’t, then it won’t kill me.
