My Experience During The Outpatient Surgery Department Of The Hospital

Upon observation of the circulating nurse, I noticed that she was very interactive and involved in the surgery. One of the responsibilities of the circulating nurse is to retrieve any surgical supplies that are not available in the operating room and to make or receive any calls for the surgeon. During the surgery, I noticed the nurse call for an x-ray for the surgeon, the laboratory for biopsy samples, and the operating room floor front desk to inform them that the surgery would be later than expected. This is her responsibility as the surgeon cannot break sterility by touching the phone and it is easier for him to communicate through her and not leave the surgical site. Also in the operating room, I observed the scrub nurses’ roles. Before the operation, the scrub nurse opened all of the sterile packages, arranged them on the sterile field, and took count of what was there along with the circulating nurse. The scrub nurse did this because she is sterile during the entire procedure, and once the sterile packs are opened, the contents can only be handled by sterile personnel. The scrub nurse also was ready and waiting at the sterile field at all times to get the surgeon any equipment needed from the sterile field. Several years ago, my appendix nearly ruptured and I had to have surgery. At that time, the staff was caring, kind, and aware of my pain, and the environment was never boring. Everyone was in a rush, and there was never a dull moment. The atmosphere is exhilarating; nurses, doctors and emergency medical technicians are always in a rush to help patients. Afterwards, I realized I wanted to help people in the same way the medical personnel helped me. This inspired me to pursue my EMT certification, but my ultimate goal is to attend medical school and become a surgeon. To be able to pursue my dream, I hope to attend (School) because of the strong curriculum and capable instructors.

Prior to beginning the nursing program the only patient contact that I had was in an outpatient clinic setting and had often thought how great it would be to become a nurse. During procedure nurse is usually passing instruments, making sure equipment is set up and ready to go, assisting with taking radiographs, taking care about patient’s escort during taking radiographs, making sure patient is comfortable and calm, processing x-rays, also working length have to be recorded in the patient notes either paper or digital or both

My daily routine as a nurse would be to get patients medication to them make sure the patient's’ symptoms have not changed. If a patient is about to go into surgery, I would help get them prepared to go into the operating room. I would make sure to get the patient's’ vitals and to make sure they are feeling okay, or ask any garrulous questions like “did you feel sick over night?” or “were you in any pain or did anything change over night?”

This was a very intestine department because I became proficient in very sick patients and interpreting telemetry strips. I develop more interest in advancing my nursing career and helping people get medical help. I realized that my nursing profession is not just a job but also a passion for helping people make an impact in their lives. To better help people, advancing my knowledge will give me an opportunity to understand sick patients, their need, and a better way to assist them with their health problems.

While interning in the Children's Clinic, I had the incredible opportunity to go and visit the NICU. This program had also introduced me how to write a medical research paper. Mini med school gave me a lot of informative information everyday by health professions which they discussed about the ongoing medical issues and other problems like drug use and criminal issues our community is facing. I have also taken classes in High School such as Ap Biology, Ap chemistry, and AP Psychology that exposes me to everyday medical terminology that health professionals use. Information offered by these classes made it easier to communicate and understand doctors.I have taken every opportunity to better prepare myself to the challenges of the medical field. During the internship, I mainly focused on the nursing branch, I shadowed nurse practitioners and registered nurses in action and how they handled medical issues and was also given the opportunity to learn and ask about their challenges in nursing school and how they had overcome it. “The Process Improvement in Stanford Hospital’s Operating Room” case has many issues when it comes to regards to its existing instrument provisioning process taking place within the Operating Room (OR) of Stanford’s Hospital. This process entails getting instruments ready for a surgery in the OR and the cleansing of these instruments afterwards; however, there are many problems that arise in this process.

My four weeks of clinical placement had thought me lots of things that can help me to become a better nurse in the future. I give my outmost respect and thanks to my clinical preceptors to the learning and knowledge they have imparted. I have learned a lot from clinical placement because 2B ward is a surgical unit I came to understand the complexity of wound care. Every wound should be assessed according to its type and severity because every type of wound has its appropriate dressing. Aside from learning clinical procedure such as wound dressing, drug administration (within scope of practice), naso-gastric feeding and etc, I came to learn the importance of teamwork it makes the job easier and allows good communication within staff members of the ward. I am looking forward for my upcoming clinical placement in 3rd year to gain more knowledge in and experience to develop my nursing skills and become a competent nurse in the future.
