When my family first arrived in Bremerton, Washington my family was frantic to get back into a congregation. We began attending a little church near where we had rented an apartment. While the congregation was filled with well intended people with a heart to serve God, they had one major setback; their Pastor. Their Pastor supposed that all of society’s woes began in 1920 when women began wearing pants. I started laughing at this idea and informed him that women began wearing pants in 470 B.C.E. when Amazon women wore pants in ancient Greece. He did not find my information funny nor was it intended it to be funny. He informed me that when women wore pants it showed of the form of their legs and men find that more attractive and become inflamed with lust. I flatly informed him that I found dresses more attractive than pants, and while that may be how he felt; he cannot base doctrine upon personal feelings. He then flatly told me that my wife was in sin because she was in the Navy and wore pants, which was the straw that broke the camels back. During the months that we attended his church he continued to remind his congregation that God came first in their lives, which I whole heatedly agreed with. He then said that the church came second, even before family, as the church was the bride of Christ and was equal in importance to Christ. THEN came ones family and then ones job. I found serious flaws with his reasoning but he insisted that the church was just as important as God
In times of turmoil for the church, intellectuals and scholars who defended Christians against accusations from outsiders were dubbed the Christian Apologists. They included people like Justin Martyr in the 100s A.D., Augustine of Hippo in 300s - 400s A.D, and Tertullian in 100s - 200s A.D. Tertullian wrote pieces on philosophy in the church, prayer, and baptism. He was one of several apologists to write about God being three separate ‘things’, but Tertullian was the first to name the Son, Spirit, and Father as the Trinity. He was one of many to write against women in the church, but he was the most vulgar and profane. Tertullian’s publication, On the Apparel of Women, is characterized by his mimicking of Paul’s writings in the New Testament, paradoxes and hypocrisies throughout, obvious misogyny by a modern standard, and men’s harmful view in a time where I, as a woman, would not be allowed to learn to read and write if my husband or father deemed it so. Not only did he insult a women’s place in the church as others did, he attacked a women’s place in anything. In the centuries after he lived, his teachings aren’t as influential in the church, but his base ideals are still part of our society as out dated standards.
Professor of religious studies Karen Armstrong finds in the early Christian Church examples of hostility toward women and fear of their sexual power, which she contends led to the eventual exclusion of women from full participation in a male-dominated church.
In recent years, God has become a very important part of my life. I am determined to learn more about God and look forward to seeing what he has in store for me and my family. At one time God was not a big part of my life, I did not attend church regularly or feel close to him. I have always believed in God and Jesus Christ as our savior, but did not actively seek a closer relationship with him. I feel that much of that changed when I accepted my current job in a church based preschool program. After taking the position in the preschool, I was then offered a position in the church’s nursery on Sunday mornings. I accepted this position also and my son and I started attending Church every Sunday. In the time since, my husband, myself, and our children have all joined the Church, been baptized, and become very active in our Church. I feel that this was God’s plan for us all along. I feel that God guides our decisions each and everyday, and I now use prayer to seek his guidance for our lives.
From the beginning of time to less than one hundred years ago, society forbade women to wear pants, because they did not want women to have freedom. Women were denied the right to earn a living, own property, and to vote; as well as denied the freedom to choose their style of
My church is a very conservative Christian church, women are allowed only to wear skirts and dresses, jeans and pant are for men only; my friends on the other hand don’t attend church at all, there influences derive from popular music videos and movies who showcase women in provocative clothing. Because of the drastic difference on both parties, often times I feel pressured over what I wear and stress my appearance for the sake of acceptance. Men’s appearance is never stressed like that of a woman, for example, in “Harrison Bergeron” the ballerinas in the story were forced to wear a mask in order to hide their beautiful faces however, the men did not have to wear a mask to hide their “handsome” faces, it was only referred to women. Many times I wish to rebel authority like that of the handicap general, she obviously does not apply to the rules she forces upon others, but the realization is there are no rules, society just brainwashes the public into believing there are in order for the public to follow what is expected. Just like how the general leads its
Throughout time, there have been diverse religious beliefs that have been taken into account regarding Christianity and God. Although, many pastors have reflected their own beliefs on that matter, one pastor can stand out from the rest. The name is Joel Osteen who became a minister in 2006 in Houston, Texas. His primary focus differed than many others, as he did not focus on the sins or evils that this corrupt world overcomes society with. Instead, he decided to preach about the idea of positive thinking and self-improving. Basically, he believed that individuals in society should focus on themselves, as they take priority over the community as a whole. When individuals immerse themselves in a deep focus on finding their true self, God will
Bruton Parish church is ultimately the most deserving building in colonial Williamsburg for a commemorative coin. The church was an important social meeting place during colonial times, and it is still an active church. It also gives us a good idea of colonial life, because the church is still the original church that was used in the 1700’s.The church should be given the coin because it is one of the most important buildings in colonial Williamsburg.
The Brice family consisted of a family unit of five. The father Davie a lawyer, the mother Caroline, their teenage daughter Claudia, the younger daughter Laura and younger son Don.
I began exploring faith with my Christian wife, Gloria, about six months ago, and made the decision to attend church with her. On the first day of attending church, I was approached by a fellow parishioner
Our society teaches women to be ashamed of their body, therefore when a young girl shows up to school in a short skirt we should support her but rather we call her out for wearing “inappropriate” clothing, then send her home. When you send her home you are essentially telling her hiding her body is more important than her education. The dress code John Paul has now, certainly does not seem fair. For example: I have witnessed my fellow classmates get called out for wearing a dress that was too short, then I walk into the hall and see other
It's surprising to see, women, who are judged by the men in our society, mistreating other women for the similar reasons. A male with a more "traditional" thinking would claim a woman to be inappropriate depending on the amount of skin she shows, her body type, or the clothing she chooses to wear. The women who, are to men, appropriate will attack women who do not fit their idea of what is acceptable with the same reasons. My bop poem surrounds the restrictions on young females who do not fit society's body normalities. A humiliating experience of mine from Sunday school inspired me to talk about my rights and social media has really educated me to further write about this topic. Keep in mind, my sunday school was not religious, it was a cultural
“I am not your dog that you whistle for; I’m not a stray animal you call over, and I am not, I never have been, nor will I ever be, your ‘baby’!” – Joy Jennings. In today’s society ”catcallling’’ is very common, sadly. Some women don’t mind being catcalled but some feel very uncomfortable. No woman should not have to worry about catcalling if their clothes are revealing. Nor should they have to worry about “guarding your brothers heart.” In some ways I have to wonder if it is just where we live that people are so judgmental about what you wear in the south. The south being very religious and pushing women twards modesty is everywhere. Some people even go as far as saying that a woman deserved to be raped by what she was wearing.
I entered into the worship service, unaware of what to expect. I was not familiar with this church, it was a non-denominational church, but the pastor had his roots in the A.M.E. Zion Church and branched out to establish his own church. I walked into the sanctuary prepared to participate in the Sunday School. I found a seat and readied myself to engage in some meaningful discussion. After sitting for several minutes, I asked one of the gentlemen who was standing at the front of the church if they had already started and where was the lesson coming from. He looked at his watch and indicated that he didn’t know if we had time for Sunday School. A puzzled look came over my face and I couldn’t help but express my confusion as I looked at
September 23 has always been a day I marked on my calendar every year. This was my wife’s and I anniversary; however, this year I had it marked down for a different event. This was the day a friend from my previous work was getting married. We discussed his Catholic belief a few times at work; consequently, when it was time for lent. As a result, I would pick on him for eating meat when he was not aloud, but that was all I really knew about the religion. The night before the big day I called him, because not knowing much about the Catholic wedding, I did not know what to wear. I did not know if I had to wear a suit or if I could wear khakis and a polo shirt. So, he told me khakis would work with a nice dress shirt.
Growing up I always lived in a religious household. We always prayed before we ate, prayed before we went to bed, and always went to church on Sunday and Wednesday night. While I never questioned these actions and never tried to rebel against them, I still didn’t understand the importance of them either. I was merely walking in my parents footsteps, doing what my parents told me, singing along to the children’s songs in Sunday school, gave a tithing of my allowance every Sunday, but my life was void of the real meanings of my actions. This went on for years. Because I had not yet read through the Bible to understand why these actions had any meaning, they were just things I did all the time and I thought that was normal and that was what it meant to be a Christian.
