“Floodwater dashed up against the skies... God issued a command allowing Yu to spread out the self-replacing soil so as to quell the foods in the Nine Provinces.” This myth from China’s remote past may reflect stories about the efforts of early rulers to control the flood waters of the Huang River- the mighty river that has been central to Chinese civilization since the earliest of times.” (Holt, World History textbook, 76). In the south there are many plateaus, moving north; there are semi-deserts. The heart of China, the China Proper, has been significant though it’s early years. The Yellow River is located in Qinghai, China. In the present day it is not very dense in population. It is a very high-altitude called the Tibetan Plateau. It is place of strong Tibetan and Mongol cultural traditions in present day China. The Yellow River is known by all Chinese people as the “mother river” (Wu). It is also agreed upon by almost all Chinese people that it is the cradle of Chinese civilization and the spiritual home of the Chinese people (Zhou). The Yellow River is the symbol of the Chinese nation, the spirt of the Chinese people, but most importantly civilization itself.
According to historical records, the ancient city began 1600 of years ago in Eastern Jin Dynasty. Ancestors believed, perhaps basing on the divination, identified here as a treasure place, took great care and kept it in good shape for thousand years.
The Shang Dynasty in China was located in an incredibly fertile area bordered by the Himalaya Mountains to the west, the Yellow and East China Seas to the east, and the Gobi Desert to the north. Shang China is the fertile ground located between the Yellow and Yangtze rivers, centered around the Yangtze. Without the continuous threats of attack from other tribes and dynasties, the Shang Dynasty could concentrate more on improving their homes and themselves. The Shang people began as a nomadic tribe, hunting and searching for their food everyday, and settled in the Henan province where they adopted an agricultural lifestyle. Floods were common. Each year, the floods would demolish the towns and homes, but the floods also brought fertile soil
The Yellow River region is a major area for China citizen stretching far back into their history. It is an ideal place because of the transporting routes and fresh fish from its water. However, the risk of living near the river is great due to the high risk of flooding. Flooding happens often in the area because of the soil is not strong enough to hold the banks.
On our first day we met our tour guide who was knew all about the Han Dynasty and could speak english, which was good because no one in my family can speak Chinese. As we walked around he told us all about what it looked like during the Han Dynasty. He told us where the Buddha statues were and still are and explained the big effect Buddhism had on the Chinese. As we were walking I realized how mountainous it is and I was thinking about how hard it must have been when they had to walk everywhere. The tour guide explained to us that Xi’an is surrounded by rivers which led to much useful water and unfortunately for the people, flooding.
China was greatly influenced by many of its physical features. The Yellow River that flowed through China, impacted China in both positive and negative ways. The people called the Yellow River the “River of Sorrows” because when the river flooded it destroyed all the crops and the houses that lived along the river. However, despite the negative side of the Huang He River, it was great for the land. The river has silt which is called loess, it deposits the loess along the river bends and makes the land fertile. Also, the Huang He River is real important to the people that live along the river, because the River provided water, food, and protection for the people. Not only did the Yellow River have a big impact on China, the Himalaya Mountains
The yellow river or Huang He is the second largest river in china at 2,900 miles. In Ancient china the chinese saw themselves as the children of the yellow river. The yellow river has played a major role on the development of civilization because the river area was always the center of culture, politics, and economy. For over 1,000 years the river had been known as the “mother river”. 4,000 B.C. farming communities developed along the yellow river and grew from there. The river spread enough silt onto the land to create miles of fertile farmland. The only thing about farming along the river was every season the river would flood and wash out all the crops. But because of the framers success the population began to grow.
She is brave and independent, willing to accept change which is good for her. In her heart, Yan'an is her dream land and with a yearning to it. And the drowning of Cuiqiao is in concert with the shots. The waters of the yellow river flow slow and dignified, reveals that perhaps Cuiqiao will have no chance to change their life tragedy. In this film the director repeat the Cuiqiao's action of fetching water for three times and every time there must be some close-ups to the yellow river (WK Cheng, 2002).
Furthermore, The Agreement of Spring Water Delivery also indicated that Li Rihua was not the only tea drinker who needed the spring water from the Mount Hui. After the spring water arrived at Jiaxing, everyone on the list was informed so that they could fetch their own vessels. There was no solid evidence to show who these people were; however, it could be inferred that these people were in friendship with Li Rihua or at least the distance within Li’s influence could reach. They might be the residents in the Jiaxing city. New Gazetteer of Jiaxing recorded that Li Rihua built his house, named Tianzhi Hall, in the eastern suburb near the waterway, where many other luxurious houses belonged to wealthy scholar-officials located. In addition, he also established the Xieshan Tower next to the waterway for the convenience of the scholar-officials’ interactions, such as literary and tea gatherings.
Generally speaking, from the earliest times in the history, water in the form of lakes, seas, and rivers, has played an important role in the development of civilization. The Yellow River was important to the development of Chinese civilization. In Chinese history the Yellow River is not simply a set of characters on a page and the name of a river, in fact, it stands for a kind of culture and civilization. Undoubtedly, the Yellow River civilization has played a very great role in the development of civilization across the globe. For thousands of years, the river has been known as the mother river of the Chinese nation, both in the writings of the poets and scribes, and in the hearts of the Chinese people. Almost all the Chinese see themselves
